Well, I do believe they have good musicians (Well, Shagrath's vocals are pretty sucky but eh). They have potential for some good metal, and they have used it in albums like Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. But they are so insanely over the top with lyrics, imagery and everything else they can't be taken seriously at all, even though it would seem they want to. However, if we talk about Black Metal, Dissection, Naglfar, Emperor or Deathspell Omega are quite better.

They try to hard too look/be evil.

But albums like Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia are badass.

Yeah, they try so hard it's funny, but I enjoy their music.

Even if that's true, they do release good albums. The only album I could see people not really liking is In Sorte Diaboli. Everything else is really great.

Dimmu Borgir went from melodic black metal to more of an extreme symphonic metal...and yes, they do try too hard to be "Evil" especialy their last album...

I also have to give them credit for getting me into more extreme music though...

In reality, it shouldn't matter. Genre's are there only to give you a hint as to if you might like it. Honestly, if someone saw black metal on an old Cradle album, and likes black metal, they have a chance of liking that music.

I talked with a guy at Nuclear Blast on Thursday and he said the album sounds more opera-like because they have an entire orchestra, and the opening track sounds like the opening music for a major motion picture.

also, to all the comments about "lol if they stop being evil they would be good lol", the image is what makes BM what it is. its mostly for the music, but the image is what adds to the feeling of the music. its supposed to be a theatrical sort of thing, and was orignally done by the old bands because they wanted to have some cohesion between seeing a band and what you hear. sure it looks fucking corny sometimes, but Rambo looks pretty corny, and he is still badass.

It's the band's choice, it makes the symphonic effects more powerful, and there are not many albums that use this to record. If you don't like it simply don't buy their albums and don't download their music. Just ignore it, go praise the band's that you like instead of hating those that you hate.

Still my point stands, listen to this if you like the band or the genre as a whole, and ignore it if you don't like it. Spend your energy on something more useful than bashing a band online. I know dimmu borgir have become cheesy and attention whores with the past album, but you can't expect a band to be perfect. The music is what matters really, and I really enjoy this genre of music. I have no particular affinity for Dimmu Borgir though.
