RATM Secure Xmas No. 1

2009-12-20 by Skimaskcheck | 109 Comments
American rockers Rage Against the Machine have this year secured the UK Christmas number 1 with their song 'Killing in the Name,' beating the X-Factor's latest winner, Joe McElderry and his cover of Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb.'

Led by a petition on social networking site Facebook, fans of Rage Against the Machine and critics of reality show X-Factor were encouraged to buy a copy of 'Killing in the Name'. Tens of thousands downloaded the song, complete with its explicit lyrics.

The song sold an impressive 502,672 copies, comfortably beating McElderry's 450,838, to become the the first download-only single to top the British charts at Christmas.

Really don't like the song, and think the campaign is kind of stupid and misguided. RATM said they'd do a free UK gig and are giving money to charity though, so can't fault them.

No it doesnt Dha, it shows that people of had enough of constantly churned out, karaoke singers. It has also stopped the monopoly of them having x-mas number one. Plus the monopoliing of the market through advertising and t.v was beaten by a private led campaign sponsered by the people who wanted it. Not the other way round.

DhA
December 23rd 2009
421 Comments

yes but they only did it because they don't like pop music, if it had been ratm at number 1 for the past 4 years they wouldnt have made a campaign. the only reason x factor had a monopoly is because more people bought it than anything else - hardly the great injustice its being made out to be

yetanotherprofile
December 23rd 2009
180 Comments

Yes. But it would never be ratm at no.1 because the market is so controlled by a minority, that bands like Rage cannot break into it. What music is there is controlled, knowbody was going to get no.1 apart from the x-factor without a private campaign. It's not the genre, it's the control of who can domintae the market that was rebelled against.

DhA
December 24th 2009

simon cowell doesn't control anything - he's successful because he makes music that a lot of people like - it's not a minority controlling the charts when you consider most music in the charts is closer to X Factor stuff than RATM style stuff

yetanotherprofile
December 24th 2009
180 Comments

Well I would argue that he does- who has got x-mas number 1 for the past four years?

DhA

yes thats because hes made the most popular xmas number 1 for the past four years - thats not "control" its "making music a lot of people like" theres a difference

yetanotherprofile
December 24th 2009
180 Comments

Yes, but how did those people come to here or 'like' the music? Because it is thrown at them from the media from all angles. You cannot get away from it, other music does not get a look in. That is the manopoly. How many months is it stretched out on t.v?

DhA
December 24th 2009
421 Comments

so? he's not doing anything wrong just because someone hears something doesnt mean they like it. i watched x-factor every week but im 99% sure i wont enjoy joe mcelderry's album. people have free will and enjoy what they like, simon cowell isnt controlling their minds or anything.
