Ihsahn Album Details
2009-10-28 by Dr Dave De Sylvia STAFF | 25 Comments

Former Emperor frontman Ihsahn will release his third solo album, After, on January 26 via Candlelight Records.

The album was recorded over eight months in Ihsahn's own Symphonique Studio with drummer Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect), bassist Lars K. Norberg (Spiral Architect), & saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining).

Ihsahn explained: "This is my first album written with 8-string guitars as basis which has been both challenging and inspiring. I also decided early on that I wanted to mix this album with Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia) and recorded the album with that in mind.

"Asgeir and Lars have again delivered superb performances. I've always wanted to implement the saxophone in my music; Jorgen’s contributions truly added a silver lining to the album."

Tracklist:

1. The Barren Lands
2. A Grave Inversed
3. After
4. Frozen Lakes on Mars
5. Undercurrent
6. Austere
7. Heavens Black Sea
8. On the Shores

This isn't the same project that made the awful stuff with his wife is it?

peccatum ruled, angl was kinda disappointing, but this sounds like it should be pretty great

'Amor Fati' was really bad, he shouldn't let his wife come into the recording part of the studio (as in, she should stay in the kitchen)

How am an I an idiot for an opinion? Thinking that's possible makes you more idiotic. Anyways, her vocals are awful and the music had no direction.

I've listened to enough obscure Metal albums in my time haha. I don't think Animal Collective suck (although I don't understand them), I do think Peccatum suck. On the positive side it doesn't look like his wife will be screwing with creativity here.

His solo stuff hasn't really impressed me tbh. Though I really like that song that rips off "A Change of Seasons" on his debut tbh.

Don't count on it. He's been going downhill for a while now.

he needs to colab with Akerfeld and Garm for a whole album. Unhealer and Homecoming are easily his best.

Bullshit. Based on what? Your opinion? This guys is as musically active as you are sexually infertile.

I didn't mean that obviously but man you can't say he's been going downhill with a couple of subjective releases to back you up. He's a really talented writer, give him a chance.

Oh Benzum hahahaha trust me, Emperor is one of my favourite bands. I know what he's capable of and his two solo album are boring compared to what he's done in the past. I wish I could believe this will be good.

While Ihsahn's two solo albums were just slightly weaker versions of Prometheus, I wouldn't say they are bad albums at all. They're just not as amazing as his previous material (which is pretty hard for just about any musician in metal to follow). I'd still comfortably say that The Adversary and angL are good albums, you just kinda have to put it into context.

Both albums are very hit and miss for me. Invocation is one of the most badass songs Ihsahn has been involved with and Unhealer and Monolith are awesome as well. But some songs are really boring. I expect this album to be the same way. Hit and miss.
