Smith Calls Radiohead Selfish
2009-10-06 by Waior | 54 Comments
No less than two years after the album's release, Tom Smith, frontman of British indie group Editors, has declared Radiohead's In Rainbows to be "selfish." Smith feels that because Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien has spoken up against illegal file-sharing with the Featured Artist Coalition, the "pay-what-you-want" method for the album was unjustified: "in giving it away for free, it didn't feel like it had any connection to the bigger problem and it was selfish"

He continued: "I think the big artists have a responsibility for the smaller artists, to speak up when things are going wrong."

Smith continued:

"It's like music is just background [for file-sharers], you can just grab bits and pieces rather than an album as a whole"

So I'm assuming if I download whole albums he'd be just fine with it?

Alright. You can't just pick a side because you're a Radiohead fan. Smith makes a valid point. Although I don't believe the pay-what-you-want method is the same as file-sharing, it doesn't do anything but attempt to give Radiohead credibility. They didn't do it for the fans, they did it because they were free of a label and they didn't need the sales to pay for their tour. The Editors on the other hand obviously need sales to recoup expenses, and rightfully see this as a threat to the DIY ethics of up and coming bands. It's like if the most popular girl in school started giving away ipods. We also can't hate the man because his last name is the same as a more well-known musician, one who now looks like a parody of himself.

I'm not picking sides just because I'm a Radiohead fan. His argument is just weak. His reasoning for why downloading is wrong (that it stops people from listening to full albums) is flawed, as I showed in my previous post. It's pretty clear that he is only using that line of argument because he doesn't want to look like a sell-out and complain about lack of money and sales. For your complaint that Radiohead only gave their album away for "credibility" (and not for the fans, which is dubious), I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the fact that Smith is doing the exact same thing, only in his case it is much more obvious.

I also don't get how giving away your album HURTS DIY ethics. Isn't that like the opposite? All the bands I listen to that promote DIY ethics (Men as Trees, Relics etc.) literally give their shit away for free or charge tiny amounts for it ($7 for a homemade Relics T-shirt? MaT's full discography is free on their site.) I would argue (as would most on this site, I'm assuming) that if it wasn't for file-sharing I would not have heard of 99% of the bands I currently love.

"We also can't hate the man because his last name is the same as a more well-known musician, one who now looks like a parody of himself."

We can't? Fuck.

'Smith Calls Radiohead Selfish' was chosen because 'Editors Frontman Calls Radiohead Selfish' and 'Tom Smith Calls Radiohead Selfish' wouldn't fit.

The Cure kick motherfucking ass. Nobody with the second name Smith should become a musician, because Robert Smith owns them all. He beats them over the head with his cock.

Mark E. Smith>Robert Smith. Sorry. The Fall>The Cure

Eh? How much money do you think bands make off album sales? Even on an indie label that supposedly is all about the artist they don't get crap. it's all about touring and merchandise. Getting sales makes money for the label, not the band. You could argue that more sales means the label (indie or not) will be willing to put more money into promotion, in turn making more money off touring and merchandise. Would it really make that big of a difference? I'd bet on no.

Once again, an artist's failure to understand that his "business" is not necessarily profitable. You should re-name the article "Tom versus Thom: Briton Bash"

Ali is spot on. I've been listening to it non-stop for the past few days & it's giving me a headache. Review will be up come the weekend.

And you know who is selfish? Smith is. See those 3 guys with him in the photo above. Lord knows what they do on the new album!

Research by US psychologist Prof. Adams of the University of Georgia suggests that 80 percent of men
who are homophobic have secret homosexual feelings.
In Prof. Adams's test, homophobic men who said they were exclusively heterosexual were shown gay sex
videos. Four out of five became sexually aroused by the homoerotic imagery, as recorded by a penile
circumference measuring device (a plethysmograph).

Prof. Adams's research was published in the prestigious US Journal of Abnormal Psychology in
1996, with the backing of the American Psychological Association.

Prof. Adams says his research shows that most homophobes "demonstrate significant sexual arousal to
homosexual erotic stimuli", suggesting that homophobia is a form of "latent homosexuality where
persons are either unaware of or deny their homosexual urges".

These findings support the theories that homophobia (fear and hatred of gayness and support for
antigay discrimination) is often indicative of repressed, self-loathing homosexual feelings; and
that many homophobes subconsciously use anti-gay attitudes as a smokescreen to disguise their own
homosexuality. Additional findings suggested that Holyroach is a flaming homosexual
