Their labels gave advance copies to a select group of people that they trusted to keep it to themselves. That trust was violated. Anybody would be justifiably angry in that situation. Assuming that this Hand guy is the guilty party, they deserve all the extra publicity they get shaming him publicly.

I don't think it's the profit so much (most bands make there money just from touring anyway), I think they're just pissed that they poured their heart and soul into this album, choose a date for it, await eagerly for their fans to hear it, and someone comes along and steals their thunder.

yeah but they probably didn't expect it to leak 2+ weeks prior to the release. Now people who were gonna buy the CD are gonna DL it just to get it early instead of waiting 16 days, and the band/label has to rush to sell as many as possible as soon as possible to minimized the damage.

Leaks are pretty inevitable, the dude from MetalSucks should have been smarter about it when he leaked it.

Converge has a pretty dedicated fan base anyway, I think most of the people who downloaded it, and especially after hearing it, will be purchasing it sometime anyway. I've had my vinyl preorder in since the first day it was possible.

Kudos to whoever waits until the release date to hear this. Leaks suck, but handled in the right way, can turn out to be pretty effective publicity.

I've never listened to any Converge before, I'm kinda diggn the drums and guitar, its fast as hell, the vocals are meh.

Not to mention there are like 45 soundoffs saying the same god damn thing.

well, i guess i'll check this out, but i think it sucks if a band really tried to keep an album a secret, only to have it leaked.

i wish sometimes albums could be like old days when you had no idea what you were getting aside from maybe one song, and then getting your face blown off by an awesome album

Is there actually any evidence that leaks hurt album sales? I guess there's probably no way to tell, but assuming that because an album leaks and fans download it, then that makes them less likely to buy it later on really makes no sense.

If they were planning to, chances they will anyway. If anything it will allow them to have a better think about whether they think it's worthy to spend money on, and by the rating it has here on sputnik, I think there's really no disputing it is if you're a Converge fan. Who knows maybe the extra coverage they get from a leak, and the fact that opinions on it while it's still officially not out only come from user reviews and word of month is beneficial because it makes them more credible.

I mean of course I can see you'd be pissed off if your work was released prior to when you designated it, but you can hardly say definitively that it's actually bad for them.

what about the introduction of itunes that could account for the fall in record sales since more casual listeners can just buy singles instead of purchasing a whole album for one song

P2P overall is another matter. I'm talking about leaks specifically, since piracy is the default position now anyway.
