Converge Accuse Leaker
2009-10-05 by Dr Dave De Sylvia STAFF | 98 Comments

Massachusetts metalcore icons Converge's have come out firing after their new album Axe To Fall was leaked online weeks ahead of its official release.

Officially scheduled for release on October 20, Axe To Fall was leaked to file-sharing networks on October 4, and the band already have a clear idea of who was responsible.

Posting on their official Twitter account, the band wrote: "Special thanks to Shaun Hand at Metal Sucks for leaking our album," adding "@metalsucks, have fun with that."

Metal Sucks responded, undertaking to investigate their culpability: "We are HORRIFIED investigating right now. If Shaun is really responsible, he will be dealt with swiftly."

A full-length legal stream of the album is likely to become available within the next week, while the band have endeavoured to rush copies out for sale at tour dates: "Thanks for the support. We hope to have copies of Axe To Fall available on tour soon (we don't even have it yet)."

regardless, they're still overreacting

a much more mature route would have been to just not acknowledge that it leaked and instead put up a stream

Saw a response by metal sucks saying the guy will be dealt with 'swiftly' if he is responsible and then converge repsonded with 'have fun with that'...

It sucks that it leaked but, at the same time, it's also good because more people will hear it and realsie how good it is and go and buy. Already had it preordered anyways

as opposed to bitching about the album being leaked? yeah caving and showing the 3 people who haven't heard the album yet the entire thing legally is much less mature than acting superior to everyone because their album got leaked really early

How are they acting superior to anyone? How does that even come into your mind?

Their labels gave advance copies to a select group of people that they trusted to keep it to themselves. That trust was violated. Anybody would be justifiably angry in that situation. Assuming that this Hand guy is the guilty party, they deserve all the extra publicity they get shaming him publicly.

I don't think it's the profit so much (most bands make there money just from touring anyway), I think they're just pissed that they poured their heart and soul into this album, choose a date for it, await eagerly for their fans to hear it, and someone comes along and steals their thunder.

Imagine being in a band and having someone else release your brand new material without your consent.

yeah but they probably didn't expect it to leak 2+ weeks prior to the release. Now people who were gonna buy the CD are gonna DL it just to get it early instead of waiting 16 days, and the band/label has to rush to sell as many as possible as soon as possible to minimized the damage.

I'd be pissed too.

well, i guess i'll check this out, but i think it sucks if a band really tried to keep an album a secret, only to have it leaked.

i wish sometimes albums could be like old days when you had no idea what you were getting aside from maybe one song, and then getting your face blown off by an awesome album

RedSky
October 6th 2009

Is there actually any evidence that leaks hurt album sales? I guess there's probably no way to tell, but assuming that because an album leaks and fans download it, then that makes them less likely to buy it later on really makes no sense.

If they were planning to, chances they will anyway. If anything it will allow them to have a better think about whether they think it's worthy to spend money on, and by the rating it has here on sputnik, I think there's really no disputing it is if you're a Converge fan. Who knows maybe the extra coverage they get from a leak, and the fact that opinions on it while it's still officially not out only come from user reviews and word of month is beneficial because it makes them more credible.

I mean of course I can see you'd be pissed off if your work was released prior to when you designated it, but you can hardly say definitively that it's actually bad for them.

See record sales before p2p sharing and major leaks. Compare them to record sales now.

what about the introduction of itunes that could account for the fall in record sales since more casual listeners can just buy singles instead of purchasing a whole album for one song

RedSky

P2P overall is another matter. I'm talking about leaks specifically, since piracy is the default position now anyway.

Iluvatar

leaks are an inevitable part of the p2p umbrella.

and record sales fell before itunes came out anyways soooo.

to say that leaks dont have a negative impact on sales IN GENERAL for artists is stupid. obviously some bands (ANIMAL COLLECTIVE) have greatly benefited from the word of mouth it can generate, but as a rule i think it is safe to assume it just makes people get the record even earlier, and either forget about it by the time it comes out or end up getting tired of it before it even gets released.
