Bob Dylan Sells Pepsi, Co-Op 2009-01-29 by Nick Butler STAFF | 23 Replies | 1746 Views |
In a move that is sure to annoy millions of people young enough to believe that the phrase 'sell-out' has any meaning, Bob Dylan has licensed two of his songs for use in advertisements. However, in a move that is genuinely unforgivable, one of them will feature the vocal stylings of will.i.am.
Pepsi have announced that their advertising campaign during something called the 'Super Bowl XLIII', which takes place on February 1st, will feature Dylan's latter-day classic "Forever Young" as performed by the Black Eyed Peas member. The visuals will be 'iconic' and 'connect the past to the present'. The ad may also air during the Grammies.
Meanwhile, the UK's Co-Operative Group, which includes banking, insurance, funeral, and travel services, has been given permission to use "Blowin' in the Wind" to advertise its supermarkets. This represents the first time Dylan has allowed his songs to be used in such a way in the UK. A spokesman for the folk icon stated that the Co-op's ethical stance, which includes stocking a large amount of fair-trade produce, was a major factor in the decision.
Dylan caused minor controversy in 2006 when he allowed songs from his album Modern Times to be used in an iPod commercial, and allowed a further track to appear in an Agent Provocateur campaign.

He's been around for long enough so I do believe he can endorse whatever he wants at this point.

I do believe the prior low was him appearing in a Cadillac ad, but this is pretty bad as well.

Understandable that these are Dylans songs and he can put them in whatever ad he wants, I just don't want to hear is same old anti-authoritaritian, anti-government/corporation bullshit on his next album, cause that would be a real kick in the nuts.
to Bob Dylan fans...I'll remain fine. This Message Edited On 01.29.09

Personally, I dont care. Dylan has done so much for music in general, its fine by me for him to make some mistakes. This doesnt bother me unlike when Ozzy and his dumb-ass family did the Pepsi commercial. That was a sell-out move!

well it's not like bob dylan is making songs with rappers and putting them on his myspace just so he can get more radio time on kiss fm.

You do know that The Times Are A Changin wasn't his last album right?
I think without the opening sentence we'd have 20 pages of comments calling him a sell-out by now. Very good.
