Metallica Declare War On Blogs

2008-06-06 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 47 Comments
As previously mentioned, rock beasts Metallica held an exclusive listening party for selected tracks from their upcoming, as-yet-untitled, album in London last week.

However, bloggers who were invited to the event (and not obliged to sign a non-disclosure agreement) have been contacted by a third party on behalf of rock beasts Metallica and obliged to remove any commentary related to the previewed music. As far as we can tell, all of the contacted bloggers have since removed any material for fear of losing their heavy metal privileges. One such blog was the UK-based Quietus, which apparently kept its review up longer than anybody else.

One of the writers was kind enough to write a piece about the album which, if you were lucky enough to read it before it was taken down, was full of praise about a return to form. At no point was the writer ask[ed] to sign a non-disclosure agreement. The Quietus and other websites ran pieces on the album, but were quickly contacted by Metallica's management via a third party and told to remove the articles. The Quietus kept our article up the longest and, as no non-disclosure agreement had been signed, [was] not prepared to remove it merely due to the demands of Metallica's management. We only eventually removed the article earlier today to protect the professional interests of the writer concerned (the piece was written anonymously). Seems Metallica's fear of the internet shows no sign of abating.

You really get the impression they hate everything internet. No matter if it's for the better ,like when people could really get the impression that they actually are able to put out somthing decent after the steaming pile of crap that was St. Anger. Or for the worse, with filesharing and the like.

Fuckin' pricks...

Last I heard Metallica hadn't even officially commented on this yet...it was a third party...which could be someone tied to the record label, not band members themselves.
I read this story yesterday and it said "no official word from the metallica camp".

You can argue that it's lame for Metallica (or the record label) to want those bloggers to keep quiet about the preview in the first place, but if they really did sign a "non-disclosure" agreement, they shouldn't be posting anything about it.

Anyways, I never really give a shit about this stuff. I judge bands on their music. It's nice if a group has a lot to say for itself offstage as well but it's not essential for me. I don't really care much about Metallica's opinions or actions about this or file-sharing and whatnot. I'm just interested to hear the new album.

I reposted the metal hammer "blog" here because I was originally going to post them here instead of links, but it was too long. By the time I got back to the Metal Hammer page it was down, so I left it posted in its entirety. So, basically, what I'm saying is that we have one of the blogs reposted here... so do you fear the wrath of Metallica???

god its pathetic how quickly you guys jump on a story that has no merit or facts what so ever. if the band themselves didnt want the reviews posted why did they put links to them on their own website? http://metallica.com/index.asp?category_id=956&searchval= and why would they being giving us videos eveyday of pieces of the new album? This is strictly a move by the record company. Actualy this smells alot like the "metallica suing band over D and F chords" from a few years back. except that one actually had a fake mtv.com, and cnn.com news story.

Look at the news article I posted called "Metallica Preview new album" (or something like that). One of the previews was taken down before I had even finished posting the article (but I had the old page open still and copied and pasted it here). The other link still worked, and now it doesn't. Seems to fit.

As lame as Metallica is I still think this has more to do with the record label than Metallica themselves. You guys are pretty blind if you think otherwise.

You actually think Metallica gives a shit what their record label says? No, this is all Metallica. They are like a bunch of whiny old men ranting on and on about this newfangled technology called the internet.

No, but it is possible that their record label does things without consulting them much. It's also possible that Metallica may not give a damn either way.

Same old, same old. I don't really care about these guys anymore. Yeah, I liked them when I was 13 just like everyone else, but they do nothing for me anymore. Thus why would I care if they decide to become scumbags? The best way I can protest is to not listen to the crappy music in the first place.

I think this is the record label or metallica's management getting scared that the bloggers will describe exactly what kind of music and stuff it all was so that others won't find out and have it spoiled before the release

I love how the news story even says "No word from the Metallica camp yet"...meaning Metallica themselves haven't even discussed this issue, and actually put these blogs on their own damn website...the article even says "third party".
Why do people on this website not even read the articles they comment on?

This is crap. The headline, Metallica wages war...You are all are idiots. First off Metallica still sells out stadiums in minutes, since soundscan started only the Beatles have outsold them....They never sued anyone, the Napster thing, well you can see the whole industry is in ruins so it seems they were right. Now to this issue. Metallica had a private listening party and after they posted the reviews came back and asked the magazines to take them down for now. That is it. They were not yet ready for the leak. You all are the douche bags, not Metallica.

Metallica has been touring Europe while this has happend and are pretty oblivious I am sure. You are all lame as hell. Metallica is by far the greatest metal band of all time, has outsold Sabbath, Maiden, Priest probably combined.

So Metallica's management said can you take these down. They probably have thousands or more put into marketing and these sights gave song titles and very specific details. All of the reviews were positive. This has nothing to do with blogs, the majority of people there were magazines. Asking them to take something down, not ready yet is a war on bloggers? No one else complained but Quietus who is obviously after their own publicity. But people, say I hate them lets war against them...Honestly, is everyone that fricking dumb on this site? Metallica just finished a European tour the other day. I think they just did not intend so much info to get leaked. There is no one suing. How frustrating that so many people are just clueless and dumb.
