Of Mice and Men Aren't Broken

2017-04-23 by Brett W | 86 Comments
Titans in the modern metal/hard rock scene, Of Mice & Men, are quickly back with new music after the departure of former front man and vocalist Austin Carlile. Carlile suffers from the disease Marfan syndrome and struggled intensely with the genetic disorder prior to his departure. He left the band in part due to a doctor's notice, noting that if he kept screaming he would end up killing himself, along with purportedly being prohibited from '[writing] what I wanted on the next record', per his Instagram.

Of Mice & Men's latest LP, Cold World, was released merely 7 months ago. The single, entitled 'Unbreakable', features the band as a four piece with Aaron Pauley on both harsh and clean vocals, as opposed to just cleans as on the previous two records.

The song initially premiered on BBC1's "Rockest Record" with Daniel P. Carter. There is no word on a new album yet.

This is basically The Flood mixed with Restoring Force, blended with new Bullet For My Valentine influences and I've missed this sound so much.

I thought Austin leaving the band would be the end of them, but this is surprisingly great considering the loss of a key member. Sounds like a Restoring Force b-side, makes me think it was purely Austin who was pushing the band in that nu-metal direction

I enjoy that album like most people would enjoy a Michael Bay film, mindless entertainment to switch your brain off to. Think about it any deeper than that and it's 1.8 average is well deserved

I wouldn't go that far, this is still bland mainstream metalcore for edgy 15 year olds who think being called "dicksplash" once or twice in school counts as bullying, but it's not terrible bland mainstream metalcore for edgy 15 year olds who think being called "dicksplash" once or twice in school counts as bullying

lol jesus.

don't you guys get sick of being marketed to? - u wanna be the person whose unbreakable, but that person does not get marketed to. u don't wanna be the person who gets "I'm not afraid, i'm not afraid, i'm not afraid... I'm unbreakable!" shouted to them by people whose deep passion for music is behind them and now its simply their career. do these gentlemen look like real strugglers to you? meanwhile, their old vocalist, who seemed to have at least an ounce of integrity tho i rlly have no idea, is doing the real suffering while his bandmates continue to feed off the pain of adolescents... who have an ever-increasing demand for soft self-pitying choruses while demanding monotone, useless harsh vocals to pretend they are not just emo.
its really just a bad joke.
This is really too harsh, and its impossible to force someone into more authentic music, especially around metal genres; you just end up making them infatuated with darker music, which is terrible.
There is just such an abundance of this, and this world won't survive the century with our generation of sufferers looking to OM & M for support. Young bloods gotta start understanding the market and how it feeds off your immaturity... otherwise we're fucked.
the problem is not just that its generic; its entirely disingenuous. it only gives u what u want to hear. and the reason some ppl hate generic shit cause its often a sign it might be fake. sometimes its totally not. other times it is. when its as blatant as this... needs to be known.
...Sorry for this... i understand you like singing to the chorus... u think the guitar is hard and complex... i've been there... and I like you... but homies gotta stop listening to 30 yr olds playing for 15 yr olds... gotta start listening for 30 yr olds playing for 30 yr olds and then it'll actually help you grow up... its much harder to find... but there's a lot more gratitude and reward when it comes... nothin wrong per se with liking stuff like this in the meantime, but just look out for bullshit, and that's all this really is... is a big big big big big pile of polished and freshly scented bullshit.

"presuming that everyone whom finds something embarrassingly bad is actually just acting out compensatory projection of some sort of personal deficit is, in itself, a projection.
and if u think that you have entirely transcended social self-consciousness then, well, you are either an idiot or are in denial."

lol that's a generalization of what i said. I don't presume everyone who finds something embarrassingly bad... etc. etc., I presume that many are when they use certain words by themselves like 'cringe' relative to certain products.

and I have not transcended social self-consciousness, I have practiced operating in spite of it for long enough that it usually no longer corrupts my personal behavior in my pretending that its not there in order to cope with it. i just let the guard down.

its reasonable to find Hopsin bad, just not cringeworthy. Most rap is pathetic. It literally brags about being a piece of shit. But its the most popular genre today. The explanation for this is that it is socially validating because people like to feel better about the shitty things that they do. That's why its 'social' music. People 'relate' to it, where relation is not really empathy, more like entertaining, exaggerated self-pity.
Meanwhile, someone like Hopsin or a Christian metalcore artist is going to be the very most likely to be called "cringe" for the very reason that it says to "be the best that you can be" or some "gay" shit like that. And that really gets the insecure social bullies riled up and ready to rage on the internet. anything lined anywhere near "corny" becomes cringe while most things near "fucked up" or "lowly" is allowed a free pass because ppl want to feel okay about being lowly and they definitely don't want to think anyone is morally superior to them. Thus, any attempt at being moral gets shat on the hardest, and being intentionally immoral often gets labeled "authentic." But the paradox is that the immoral are inauthentic, and those trying to be moral who are shat on the hardest are often innocently authentic, almost dreamlike. And then the wolves gather round to try to externalize their insecurities, and usually end up turning that innocent authenticity into something worse. so when i smell dirty cunts, I often take the responsibility of playing the giant douche...
