SOAD always wrote too many songs for an album and then only kept the best ones. I always felt like it was a very bad approach to writing music. As if someone in the band doesn't want to look at his mistake or weaknesses and try to correct them.
And that's how Mezmerize, Hypnotize and Steal this album felt to me. There's good but it's brought down by the bad that wasn't trimmed. All the songs are raw and feel like they could have been so much better if given the chance => a second look.
Anyway, I'm curious about this release of course.

Those albums were excellent. Mesmerize in particular was superb.

Not really, he had 1-2 songs that sucked but he was great in the other ones.

Serj once said that bands have expiry dates and I think he's right. Especially considering what the members have done in the past years, I really doubt that they will be able to record an album snappy enough to do their discography justice. Then again, maybe the political situation will give them new anger and energy, who knows.

Never understood what people saw in this band, but what the hell, maybe they'll surprise me.

Serj's voice has changed over the time. Now when he hits high notes, he sounds like a duck to me.

I've heard that they were ''going on with or without him'' and he hasn't commented on it yet but in the past he was okay with letting them go on without him and the band were actually going to. The guitarist Shavo had a falling out with serj it seems and serj didn't really fight back and just let them go on and that could happen again here since they mentioned going on ''with or without'' him again.

Serj's voice the main thing that put me off. I actually found myself laughing listening to his solo album.

Haven't liked any of their solo/side project stuff and I'm guessing this is going to be equally shit.

Daron's voice sucks most of the time, pls no.

Let's hope this is the beginning of a new wave of politically charged rock, metal and punk. Punk especially has lost touch with its political roots of late (definitely in hardcore, they're angry about the most petty things but never politics). SOAD leading the charge.

Doesn't matter if the band is talented. Soundgarden used to do the same thing which is why superunknown and dotu are so long, the guys could never agree on which songs to take off the album so they just left them.

You know songs like Question, Lost in Hollywood, Hypnotize etc would never be as good if it was just Serj signing in them. The two of them just complement each other perfectly.

for every one of those there's probably 2-3 that are ruined because they wrote around daron's singing and other than his unique sound he aint good at it

The only one I can think of is She's Like Heroin even though I still enjoy that song.

Daron isn't good enough to drive a song on his own but if he sings alongside Serj like on songs like Mr. Jack, it works really well.

Daron's vocals are great, he totally makes Steal This Album! his bitch

Daron is fantastic when singing duet or at least back up with Serj, they just have great chemistry together. I don't mind Daron as much as a lot of people when he's solo but yeah they're generally just not as strong

I wouldn't call Daron "fantastic" at singing in any context, if Serj had sung his own backing vocals it would have sounded just as good. The only dynamic Daron adds is his lighter timbre.

also an essential dynamic in energy which is very different from the type Serj brings, the added bonus of not having someone do backing vocals for their own lead vocals which is always lame, styles of vocals that Serj can't really do, and the basic ability for the band to perform their backing vocals live which keeps their back-and-forth alive

I think anything after the s/t falls into that category though. It's just they found a way to make it radio friendly while still maintaining the high quality of the music.

Kinda feel like it's 10 years too late but I really hope it's good. I would love to jam these guys again. Probably one of favorites back in high school.

I feel this was Serj's plan anyways because he said he wanted to do his 4 solo albums before discussing ending the hiatus. If it wasn't for him, this would've happened much sooner.

I like Daron's vocals. I can understand how people are annoyed by them though. I liked Scars On Broadway quite a bit.

Toxicity was their biggest album, so they will want to emulate that album for at least one album.

Ironically you only hear Toxicity and Self Titled songs on the radio now lol.

tbh who would even fill in those shoes? to me, serj is essential to SOAD's style...unless Daman takes over 100% vocal duties, which would probably suck. I hate it when people say stuff like this, but no Serj = no SOAD.

They'd also probably have to be Armenian which'd make it even tougher.

As much as I like this band I really hope they don't make a new album tbh... Serj seems to have lost interest in this band considering the recent live performances. No energy, no fun, just sad. Don't think they can reinvigurate the spirit of the past.

A new vocalist would be no option at all I guess... Serj is irreplaceable for this band.
