R.I.P. Leonard Cohen

2016-11-11 by Xhoven | 52 Comments
Legendary musician Leonard Cohen passed away Thursday at the age of 82. Cohen's health had deteriorated in recent years and included multiple fractures of the spine. The news was broken by a message on his Facebook page saying:

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.
We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.
A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief."

His final album You Want It Darker was released back in October.

Can people stop saying 'Holy Shit' - this is not a fluke. The original forefathers of popular culture are all getting really old and this pattern will actually accelerate not decelerate in future years. Its not spooky, its not weird - its what is going to happen every year from now on.

Jagger, Iggy, Ozzy, Dylan, McCartney, etc will all join them soon and it won't be a surprise to anyone.

Get a fuckin grip.

It's reality alright but it doesn't make it any less of a loss. All these legends leave a space that cannot be filled by today's weak-ass, so-called, media-created artists. But I guess this is what happens when a genre is so "new". You get to witness its creation and loss of greatest figures.

I don't mind people being sad/respectful about it but the degree of shock is just getting lame - if 2016 has taught us anything it is that we should be anything but shocked when another legend snuffs it. They are old. They are writing albums about getting old and preparing for death, etc. Come on people.

Wow fuck off Doof

Just because they are old doesn't undermine the shock or sadness

doof isn't saying that people aren't allowed to be sad about it tho, he's saying its ridiculous to go all "oh 2016 is killing off everyone" and whatnot. it always comes as a shock, but as you reach a certain age the possibility of it happening increases.

DoofusWainwright

I'm not undermining the sadness.

All I'm saying is the expressions of shock are getting silly and imo belittles the actual meaning of the loss. The dude gave an interview last week saying he was about to die.

"OMFG I can't believe it celeb no. 112 has died this year! This is the biggest shocker yet. 2016 IS A CURSE" = shut the fuck up

Yeah it's not a surprise. I think that their shock has to do with the actual loss rather the surprise of it. Plus the fact that some times we perceive the famous as indestructible. For example, it's a miracle Lemmy lived till he was 70; I wouldn't manage to live a week like he did but still, for a few hours, I was shocked because I thought he was gonna live more.

I guess in the future the world will be inhabited by cockroaches and Keith Richards and I will be "shocked" if it doesn't happen ;)

Flag I'm trying to make this the last time I have to read '2016 IS A CURSE!' before guess what - next year it'll be '2017 IS A CURSE!'

It isn't a curse, it isn't a freak. IMO spouting that nonsense is what's disrespectful - neck craning old wive's tale bullshit from the ADD generation. If you can't see that then you've lost perspective.

Whoa! He said in a recent interview that he was getting ready to die, but I didn't think the flame would be blown out this soon. At least he died peacefully at an old age, unlike some of 2016's victims, and like Bowie he left on an epic note. R.I.P.

I've bought a few Cohen records over the years but never really took the time to listen to them. Looks like now is the perfect time to do so.

I don't know when I'll be back.
They're moving us tomorrow,
To that tower down the track.
But you'll be hearing from me baby,
Long after I'm gone.
I'll be speaking to you sweetly,
From a window,
In the Tower of Song.

probably because the "omg 2016" comments are overdone by this point and it really shouldn't be a surprise that someone who has fully acknowledged they're going to die soon did indeed die

kind of a double edged sword if anything but whatever

I get what Doof is saying, and it's not good to be super-"memey" per se about the language one uses when confronting a year full of celebrity death like this (using text acronyms like OMG make you sound like a typical middle-schooler, I get that).

However, I will play devil's advocate and say that this year is the first year on record (in my recent memory) where SO many musical artists have just up and passed on. Yes, death is a constant in life, as it should be, but one has to admit it has been more than a bit eerie with the 1) volume of people passing on and 2) frequency of it compared to years past.

I don't really think this is a generational thing, since we've had plenty of people bite the dust this year before their lives should've even been half over (Anton Yelchin from Star Trek, anyone?). And yes, media coverage of all these deaths is at an all time high, but I honestly think that's more to do with society's increasing views and fears about death itself than anything else. With digital technology so prevalent these days, we can't help but think how fragile both our data and our own humanity is in comparison with it.

Sorry for the long post, just thought I'd try to clarify some viewpoints. RIP Mr. Cohen
