Also wondering if we can add "idol metal" as a tag on here now (I think it's more of an umbrella term than Babymetal's "kawaii metal" or Ladybaby's "kawaiicore" and refers to other acts such as Necronomidol, Deathrabbits, FruitPochette etc.). Obviously I'd have to add those bands to the Sputnik database for that to happen.

Read about this band in Metalhammer but had zero desire to hear them. Yeah not good, an attempt at jumping on the Babymetal train but it's not handled very well. Ah well, the gimmick is...different.

I'm not sure if it's entirely ripping off Babymetal. A lot of people say Ladybaby's sound is closer to Death Rabbits than it is to Babymetal's. Idol metal's a pretty diverse genre as it takes all kinds of styles of metal and Japanese idol pop and mixes them up in different ways. FruitPochette are probably closer to Babymetal.

Sonically it's not the same (although the premise is close) but the gimmick is just a twist in what Babymetal got big with. Little kids making Kawaii heavy music, with the spin being the bearded Australian cross dresser lol. The band name removes any doubt that they weren't going for a similar thing anyway.

Yeah I think Ladybaby and Babymetal are the two most likely to take off in the rest of the world, and the only two to tour outside of Japan as far as I know. I really think they should start taking other idol metal bands out to the UK and US with them to help the scene blossom and maintain long term success for their genre because the more bands in the scene that get successful, the less likely you are to be seen as just a short term gimmick rather than part of a new musical movement.

Oh yeah you know those Loudwire deathmatch vote things? One happened on another site between Ladybaby and Death Rabbits, idk who won. Death Rabbits describe themselves as "death pop", continuing the trend of idol metal bands coming up with weird names for their music.
