Swallow the Sun triple LP

2015-08-20 by Kyle Ward EMERITUS | 47 Comments
Finnish melodic death/doom metal band Swallow the Sun have announced plans to follow up their 2012 record Emerald Forest and the Blackbird with a triple LP titled Songs from the North I, II & III. Revealing the album on their Facebook page, the band stated:

"The new SWALLOW THE SUN release will be a triple album entitled Songs From The North I, II & III. The Finnish sextet’s last album, Emerald Forest And The Blackbird, was released in winter 2012; come November 2015, the long wait between recordings will finally be over.

Main songwriter and guitarist Juha Raivio comments on the triple album concept: “Making a triple album in this godforsaken digital and modern day and age...Many will say it's madness. I say it is to bring worth, heart and respect back into the music and to the album format where it belongs. This should never turn into a shallow fast food industry where music is only downloaded one song at a time.

These albums hold life, death, gloom, beauty and despair in their deepest levels and forms. The three chapters are different but connected, one long journey through these songs written up here in the North.

Music is holy, albums are holy. See you on the other side, friends.”

Soundi Magazine (FI) has published a story about the new SWALLOW THE SUN release. See below for an excerpt from the article that reveals more details about the three albums:

Juha Raivio: “We will release a three studio album package, called ‘Songs From The North I, II & III’. The records are very different from each other, but still form one entity: one with respect for SWALLOW THE SUN's traditions, the second beautifully acoustic, and the third a trip into funeral doom´s dark world.

I wonder if any Finnish band has previously released three new studio albums at the same time? This might be a historic release? I hope so.”

Timo Isoaho (Soundi Magazine): “I mean, three new studio albums! It must have been enormous task?”

Raivio: “Well, we have been short of sleep…We have undeniably done quite a lot work for these records. My attitude towards this very personal entity has been that if this project kills me, at least I can sleep well knowing that it’s the most important SWALLOW THE SUN release.”

Stay tuned for more news about Songs From The North I, II & III coming soon!"

This has me really, really intrigued. Could be complete garbage, but I think it might be quite good.

The Morning Never Came is phenomenal and I very much enjoyed Hope so I will certainly check this out regardless of the past couple of albums.

Probably one of the most stupidly ambitious concepts for an album I've ever heard. But it has me intrigued tho

Actually really excited for this, if it's a change of pace at all for the band then it's bound to be better than the last one. There'll probably be some very weak points but I don't mind so long as at least one of the discs is solid

I really don't like double albums, a triple seems weird but these guys are awesome so lets wait and see.

I didn't like their last album but I think this could potentially work out well for them considering they're going for different sounds with each one. Hopefully they cut the fat off each disc but seeing that was the last album's biggest problem (apart from being fucking boring) I have my doubts.

A triple LP, has me a little nervous. I haven't really been into anything they have done since Hope but I always give them a chance, their first 3 are some of of my favorite metal albums.

Very doubtful this will be anything more than moderately interesting, but the funeral doom aspect has my interest beyond piqued.

Most of the albums in that list are either live or compilation, this is certainly crazily ambitious but I personally can't wait. I've loved STS since middle school, it'll probably be amazing, especially that second disc.

what a strange track... basically no riffs, the way the growls are mixed is peculiar, the lyrics are awful

not feeling it either. still have hope though because honestly the ones I want to hear are the folk and funeral doom records, not the first one that this is from

DungeonBoy

the growls are too low in the mix here contrasted with those cleans that are mixed too loud. His cleans are not good enough to carry a song imo. I think they add a nice touch when used sparsely. This song is not very promising for this third.

i did like the little acoustic and synth flourishes here and there but the track felt anaemic and spineless

everyone else seems to be complaining about the production but i think it sounds fine so whatever lol

It's definitely nit picky. I just loved the way the Morning Never Came sounded and miss how crushing the growls were.
I still plan on checking out all of it. I gave Emerald Forests more chances than it deserved and will do the same with the new albums.

yeah that was meh at best. lyrics once again are absolute shit, acoustic guitars do nothing, there is no variation whatsoever in the vocal delivery, no notable tempo or pitch changes, no real emotion. not looking good.

Well Mikko has no range in his voice, so I think imma pass on the acoustic LP.
