Slowdive Reunite

2014-01-29 by Athom EMERITUS | 25 Comments
After 19 years of relative silence, British shoegaze act Slowdive have reunited. The band will play their first shows in 20 years at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Spain, and The Village Underground in London on May 19th. The band have also announced that a new album is also in the works and that the shows are not a personal cash grab, but a way to fund the subsequent recording themselves.

"the shows are not a personal cash grab, but a way to fund the subsequent recording themselves."

Which is still sort of the same thing. I don't know why bands get uptight about that, they need to
make money and unless they're dumb they make music to support themselves comfortably. There's nothing
wrong with saying "hey we're back because we wouldn't mind some extra cash."

Interested to see if their sound changes at all.

@Riviere I think there's a difference when you compare it to a band like Pavement a couple years ago who were paid out seven figures to play even though it's noted that they all hate each other and have no intent to persue anything new musically with it.

i think its rather interesting to see how all of these 20+ year old bands are reuniting. i tend to think its because of this cultural interest in retro things that's taken over now, especially in music, and that the internet is allowing for them to come back and reach audiences they probably couldnt have before.

anyways hopefully this will rock, even if they pull an MBV and just do souvlaki pt. 2 it will be awesome.

I also think a large part of it is that most of these bands broke up never having known the notoriety and respect that came from their massive influence decades down the line. A lot of the records were looked on highly by other musicians but never really took off in the mainstream. I can understand where the contempt comes from, especially for members of bands like Slowdive or At the Gates or even Godspeed You Black Emperor up until a few years ago, where you as a musician are pouring yourself into other projects and now 10 years later everyone wants to talk to you about something you did when you were 20 and completely ignores what you're doing in the present day.

I am soo stoked. I'm interested to see how Neil sounds after doing all of his folk stuff for all these years. If that will play any influence.

That primavera line-up is insane.

Good to see this happening.

Yup, it certainly is. Slowdive, Godspeed, The National, Pixies, Queens, NMH, Slint, NIN, Mogwai... and that's just the top of the bill. Definitely considering this if I can get work off/enough money together.

That too. I could've gone on. It really is a disgustingly good line-up.
