Epic drops Death Grips

2012-11-01 by Tijnmans | 132 Comments
Exactly one month ago Death Grips leaked their album "NO LOVE DEEP WEB" because Epic wouldn't give them a release date. Record label Epic (a sublabel from Sony) has now confirmed they will drop Death Grips.

The following statement has been given regarding the situation:

"Epic Records is a music first company that breaks new artists. That is our mission and our mandate. Unfortunately, when marketing and publicity stunts trump the actual music, we must remind ourselves of our core values. To that end, effective immediately, we are working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips. We wish them well."

Earlier today Death Grips leaked an heated e-mail conversation between them and Epic.

I thought this was all a marketing ploy. I'm pretty convinced that it wasn't now.

I too thought that this was a marketing ploy, especially after reading this blog post: http://blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/2012/10/why_death_grips_sold_drama_instead_of_no_love_deep_web.php

What a stupid idea on their part! If they don't settle they will be destroyed by the pursuant litigation.

death grips was simply unwilling to break the promise they made to their fans. they promised 2 LPs in 2012. epic records was gonna prevent them from fulfilling that cuz of god knows what. they must not of been satisfied with the album or something but i thought they first heard it when we did

Yea and in the mean-time Epic Records is at a loss which could mean layoffs or employees being let go during an already disastrous economy while the company picks up the pieces.

that's respectable but also entirely their own fault. a) don't promise shit you don't have control over, b) if you're going to play the game and join a major record label, one should also learn to play by the rules.

Look at it this way: here's a label signing a band that's been getting a lot of hype lately, right? They fund them and put up whatever aid they can for the recording of a new album, which they think will net a handsome return. The band then leak the album (I'm pretty sure the band posted that they were the ones who leaked it), and then Epic can sue because they won't see that return anymore. Even if they kept the band on the label, sales won't be as high as predicted, and the difference between investment and return increases to an amount that the label will want returned to them

Depends. Obviously they can't sue for say 10 million or some astronomical amount like that, but they could claim for a reasonable return based on expectation and potential time put into an advertising campaign that hadn't been revealed yet. Most labels sign artists because they see a potential for them to "go far" (read: make money), and signing Death Grips would have seemed like shooting fish in a barrel. If the group had played nice this would have been a lucrative partnership

Deviant.

But at the end of the day, they'll be looking for compensation rather than an amount to simply replace what they've already spent. Technically speaking, I doubt this has put the label at a "loss"

-they broke the terms of their contract, blatantly and in several ways
-they're refusing to give Epic the masters which they are legally entitled to
-they posted a confidential email online for the public to read including the guy's phone number and office address. the email included this by the way: "The sole information contained in this email is legally privileged, personal, and confidential, ans as such is intended solely for the use of the named recipients. [...] Any distribution, dissemination, or reproduction of this email is strictly prohibited."

they're so unbelievably fucked. Epic's lawyers will be in their area and there will be hustle bones coming out their mouths.

It's pretty hilarious to me that Epic feigns artistic integrity, and cites "Marketing stunts trumping the actual music", when that is exactly what Epic did to Death Grips, that caused them to release the album themselves in the first place. Epic artificially delayed this finished album, until "sometime next year". I LOL'ed at the irony. Liars. Also, no one with Avril Lavigne, Chevelle, and Celine Dion on their label can pretend to have artistic integrity.

haha. my dad is a lawyer but fuck that i am not.

listen, i'm not a retard. i know that the bit on the email is an automatic addition and in itself isn't legally binding, it's just a nice visual reminder that by sharing the email with millions of fans, they aren't doing themselves any legal favours.

"as for 'inferring' anything, do whatever you want there, all i'm saying is that weird shit happens in the shadows and we don't really know anything"

yeah fair enough. i agree, we don't really know anything. but it seems like Death Grips are being stupid fucks and I wouldn't be surprised if they got sued. I shouldn't have stated my opinion so aggressively.

and in regards to the talk about "oh if it had been godspeed or thrice you'd be praising them" I really don't think so. Having an issue with your label and giving them the finger is fine, I just think they're being really stupid with how they're dealing with this. and plus the vast majority of music fans really like these guys, i'm definitely in the minority in thinking that they're terrible.

"ps deviant you are an unbelievable fag (and i don't mean this in the homosexual way)...do you read your comments? I didn't know you were a lawyer/music executive/moral authority...same goes for you Aids..."

ok christ sorry. like I said, it was a mistake for me to have stated my opinion so aggressively. basically I find this story entertaining because of the way Death Grips are playing it. so this especially if Thrice, or Opeth, or maudlin of the Well did it...i don't see how disregarding financial gain for the sake of artistic integrity (even if you don't like the art, they released it for their fans, without any hope for a monetary return except maybe some extra hype, but i have yet to meet anyone who knew about death grips before i told them) can be so maligned, haters just hating on something they wouldn't be brave enough to do in the same situation...ps deviant you are an unbelievable fag (and i don't mean this in the homosexual way)...do you read your comments? I didn't know you were a lawyer/music executive/moral authority...same goes for you Aids...

I thought we had enough punching bags, why did you come back?

Couldn't get halfway through the first song. These guys aren't that special.

I can't wait for the threads when they actually start getting sued. Should be a hoot.

For what? NLDW got them dropped from Epic but they have settled a while ago.
