I thought this was all a marketing ploy. I'm pretty convinced that it wasn't now.
RIP Death Grips, enjoy being sued into oblivion.
|
| |
Hahaha
|
| |
these guys are nuts
a bit too pretentious for my liking
I heard Exmilitary once or twice, didn't like it
won't miss 'em if they go anywhere
|
| |
haha awesome
|
| |
sounds like someones pissed they didnt get no moneys
|
| |
fuck epic
|
| |
I too thought that this was a marketing ploy, especially after reading this blog post: http://blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/2012/10/why_death_grips_sold_drama_instead_of_no_love_deep_web.php
What a stupid idea on their part! If they don't settle they will be destroyed by the pursuant litigation.
|
| |
lol
|
| |
Even thought they are surely going to be sued, good on them for fighting back against what they thought was an injustice
|
| |
this band does things their own way
which is way too pretentious for me
|
| |
money > "fighting back against what they thought was an injustice"
|
| |
thats like your opinion man
|
| |
As much as I love artists playing by their own rules, everybody has to grow up eventually. When you agree to a contract you have to stand by that agreement that you made, even if there are a couple delays.
|
| |
death grips was simply unwilling to break the promise they made to their fans. they promised 2 LPs in 2012. epic records was gonna prevent them from fulfilling that cuz of god knows what. they must not of been satisfied with the album or something but i thought they first heard it when we did
|
| |
"Even thought they are surely going to be sued, good on them for fighting back against what they thought was an injustice"
Yea and in the mean-time Epic Records is at a loss which could mean layoffs or employees being let go during an already disastrous economy while the company picks up the pieces.
|
| |
that's respectable but also entirely their own fault. a) don't promise shit you don't have control over, b) if you're going to play the game and join a major record label, one should also learn to play by the rules.
|
| |
it's just an enormous erect cock what's the big deel
|
| |
Well, no shit
|
| |
Death Grips win hard, they gained tons of exposure from being on a major label, now they can sign to an indie and make way more money
|
| |
Death Grips is so rock and roll
|
| |
123
|
| |
going to get sued out their assholes
|
| |
" Yea and in the mean-time Epic Records is at a loss which could mean layoffs or employees being let go during an already disastrous economy while the company picks up the pieces."
I think you're overstating the impact this will have on Epic records a bit. And by that I mean a lot.
|
| |
aww poor band
|
| |
"sued into a dumpster"
knowledge
|
| |
Can they really sue them 'into a dumpster' if they're the ones who dissolve the relationship?
|
| |
pretty sure death grips is most comfortable living out of a dumpster anyways
|
| |
Yea and in the mean-time Epic Records is at a loss which could mean layoffs or employees being let go
Removing one artist from a roster, and an album that's had zero publicity provided by the label, isn't going to result in any damaging losses for the company
|
| |
Can they really sue them 'into a dumpster' if they're the ones who dissolve the relationship?
Yes, the artist broke the contract. Epic have since dissolved the contract as a result of that breach
|
| |
pretty sure death grips is most comfortable living out of a dumpster anyways
pretty sure thats where they recorded exmilitary so yeah not a big change for them
|
| |
Yes, the artist broke the contract. Epic have since dissolved the contract as a result of that breach
Over a leaked album? Can it even be proved that they leaked it?
|
| |
Look at it this way: here's a label signing a band that's been getting a lot of hype lately, right? They fund them and put up whatever aid they can for the recording of a new album, which they think will net a handsome return. The band then leak the album (I'm pretty sure the band posted that they were the ones who leaked it), and then Epic can sue because they won't see that return anymore. Even if they kept the band on the label, sales won't be as high as predicted, and the difference between investment and return increases to an amount that the label will want returned to them
|
| |
It just sounds like something that can be difficult to prove. You can say a lot of shit, proving the action is a different story.
|
| |
The thing is, I'm pretty sure if anyone officially asked them if they leaked the album they probably wouldn't deny it
|
| |
Can't really judge the situation well, but I don't like Death Grips so fuck them, right?
|
| |
The thing is, I'm pretty sure if anyone officially asked them if they leaked the album they probably wouldn't deny it
They're fucking idiots then.
|
| |
"They're fucking idiots then."
Or just pretentious as fuck. Judging by other comments, this seems to be the consensus.
|
| |
"pretty sure thats where they recorded exmilitary so yeah not a big change for them"
your attempting to insult the band but they would take it as a compliment seeing as thats the sound they were going for lol
|
| |
"if anyone officially asked them if they leaked the album they probably wouldn't deny it"
no shit, because everyone and their mother already knows they did it
|
| |
How much of a loss could Epic be at?
No Love Deep Web sounds like it was recorded in a home studio with a macbook and an 808
|
| |
yeah i was shocked when i saw those emails between epic and DG
cuz epic was all like, "we own the masters of those songs, give them to us immediately" and i was like lolwut theyre bedroom recordings
|
| |
Death Grips is pretty popular (for some reason I can't understand) so idk
How big is Epic anyway?
|
| |
this kid
|
| |
lol hi mal
|
| |
theyre owned and run by Sony i think theyre pretty big
|
| |
Epic means big as fuck duh
|
| |
I don't think that being run by Sony qualifies them to be big lol
Do they do business with any other big artists?
|
| |
ummm Sony is one of the big 4 of record labels
This is how I feel right now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0p76aag1h_c
|
| |
yea
|
| |
"I don't think that being run by Sony qualifies them to be big lol"
all i see out of you is blah blah blah im an idiot
|
| |
Sigh...Molly why do you have to start shit again?
|
| |
I thought that Epic was some shit little record label offshoot, but I guess not?
|
| |
all of the scenecore has really rotted your brain
|
| |
Funny, Mal. You're a laugh, as always.
|
| |
funny?
or true?
|
| |
Pretty sure just funny
|
| |
It could still be a marketing ploy who the fuck knows.
|
| |
Hope it's not
|
| |
WATCHING ME
WATCHING ME WATCH THEM WATCH ME
|
| |
Not a surprise at all.
|
| |
How much of a loss could Epic be at?
Depends. Obviously they can't sue for say 10 million or some astronomical amount like that, but they could claim for a reasonable return based on expectation and potential time put into an advertising campaign that hadn't been revealed yet. Most labels sign artists because they see a potential for them to "go far" (read: make money), and signing Death Grips would have seemed like shooting fish in a barrel. If the group had played nice this would have been a lucrative partnership
|
| |
But at the end of the day, they'll be looking for compensation rather than an amount to simply replace what they've already spent. Technically speaking, I doubt this has put the label at a "loss"
|
| |
They could've at least pretended that it wasn't them that leaked it
|
| |
But they wanna be edgy maaaaan
|
| |
They're gonna get the edgy sued out of them :/
But "Death Grips win hard, they gained tons of exposure from being on a major label, now they can sign to an indie and make way more money"
|
| |
I can't believe they posted that email. they're so fucking stupid and are going to get sued soooooooo hard.
a. terrible music
b. really, really, really stupid
c. peni all up in my biz-ness
0/5 terrible bad go away please
|
| |
So I guess they're not gonna survive the suing
|
| |
Can they really sue them 'into a dumpster' if they're the ones who dissolve the relationship?
-they broke the terms of their contract, blatantly and in several ways
-they're refusing to give Epic the masters which they are legally entitled to
-they posted a confidential email online for the public to read including the guy's phone number and office address. the email included this by the way: "The sole information contained in this email is legally privileged, personal, and confidential, ans as such is intended solely for the use of the named recipients. [...] Any distribution, dissemination, or reproduction of this email is strictly prohibited."
they're so unbelievably fucked. Epic's lawyers will be in their area and there will be hustle bones coming out their mouths.

you don't know any of this tho, nor do you know the terms of the contract OR who laid out money for what so lol tone it down their chief
|

lol
|
| |
Adrian Hertzberg you guys are gonna get sued so damn hard.
also I hate your music but that's irrelevant.
|
| |
well yeah actually i know all of it. read the email from Epic.
|
| |
haha yeah
|
| |
i read it and you still don't know shit lol
it's an email and not the actual contract
and for the record, that jargon at the bottom does not have the effect you seem to think it will lol
|
| |
no offense i actually never bothered with death grips they could suck im just putting this out there lol
it sounds pretty rad what they did but thats just me idk
|
| |
"Epic's lawyers will be in their area and there will be hustle bones coming out their mouths."
you clearly love their music
|
| |
how fucking stupid. I like Death Grips, but come on..what the hell did this little stunt do? pretty immature, imo.
|
| |
THEY'RE SO FUCKING EDGY THOUGH HAHAHAHAHAHA I'M IN YO AREA GETGETGETGETGOTGOTGOTGOT ITGOESITGOESITGOESITGOES #NOIDED AND OTHER ALL CAPS ONE LINERS
I love DG but boy are some of their fans retarded.
|

|
| |

|
| |

|
| |
i agree u probably shouldnt care about someone who calls you out on stupidy so much but hey im not here to start a fight so stop kickin up dust lets just talk about how much you love death grips

STEADY CREEPIN
BLOOOOD CREEPPIIINNN!!!

academy --
obviously i know it's not the actual contract, but you can infer that Rise definitely have a case from the email. also, in regards to the bit at the bottom, um...yes, that does matter. it's there to tell them that they are breaking the law if they share the email with the public, and they did it anyway. obviously i don't know any specifics of the case or contract but you don't have to be a genius to see that they fucked up big time. if they keep being idiots then yeah they are likely going to get sued and lose.
|
| |
Epic* not Rise. they're just so bad my brain skipped a step and assumed they were signed to Rise.
|
| |
ha ha ha ha ha
|
| |
It's pretty hilarious to me that Epic feigns artistic integrity, and cites "Marketing stunts trumping the actual music", when that is exactly what Epic did to Death Grips, that caused them to release the album themselves in the first place. Epic artificially delayed this finished album, until "sometime next year". I LOL'ed at the irony. Liars. Also, no one with Avril Lavigne, Chevelle, and Celine Dion on their label can pretend to have artistic integrity.
|
| |
obviously i know it's not the actual contract, but you can infer that Rise definitely have a case from the email.
Well yeah, they do but it's such a minute thing on its own that I doubt Epic would do anything about it. It's simply going to add to their case to legally dissolve their obligations with the group
|
| |
Yet, Death Grips remain unscathed by this. Their style isn't meant for a record label to handle.
|
| |
I wouldn't say unscathed. I don't know if they'll ever try and seek out label representation again, but I think it's safe to say that this has closed a lot of doors for them
|
| |
LOL like they need a label
|
| |
unscathed? you can't take someone to the cleaners over night dude. the judicial system kinda has a funny thing
about taking time to go through the process and legally come to a conclusion.
What does any of that have to do with the word unscathed? If they get done for it now or later it makes no difference
|
| |
Their #streetcred amongst their 15-year old fans will remain intact, because "fuck the system hurr durr" etc
|
| |
Look at it from their point of view though. They were due to release their album, had given out a release date etc, then all of sudden it's delayed inevitably? Would you not be pissed too?
|
| |
Albums are postponed and delayed all the time, why should this be the exception? And there's a difference between being pissed and acting like little kids who just had their favourite toy taken away from them
|
| |
yea i'd be pretty pissed, but considering i'm a grown ass man, as i believe the members of death grips to be, i wouldn't be throwing a fit and burning bridges. I definitely wouldn't be doing anything that would get me sued. their point of view is incredibely immature imo.
|
| |
oh, nvm. what deviant said...
|
| |
If, say, Godspeed You! did something like this everyone would applaud/fellate them for their courage. I mean what Death Grips did was pretty callow but I get the feeling that the ire being unleashed towards them stems from a dislike of the bands music/image and not this particular incident.
|
| |
I don't know, pretty sure the comments are just a reflection of the idiotic situation
|
| |
Damnnnnnn
|
| |
New album sucked.
RIP Death Grips.
|
| |
aids idk if you're a canadian lawyer or something (that wub b sooooooooo cute!) but i dont think u know what u talkin bout homie
those things are boilerplate. they're as automatic as email signatures (notice the different font color to separate the important part of the email from the disclaimer). Sure, there is some small, largely discretionary value there but in the grand scheme of things their primary use is to intimidate non-lawyers with legalese to make up for a lawyer fucking up and sending a confidential email to the wrong person
here:
http://lawyerist.com/this-post-is-privileged-and-confidential/
http://lawyerist.com/email-disclaimers-annoying-pointless/
as for 'inferring' anything, do whatever you want there, all i'm saying is that weird shit happens in the shadows and we don't really know anything
|
| |
Albums are postponed and delayed all the time, why should this be the exception? And there's a difference between being pissed and acting like little kids who just had their favourite toy taken away from them
aids-
this quote from dev could help illustrate: what if the contract stated something about releasing two albums in 2012?
|
| |
what would you do if ur son was at home cryin all alone on the bedroom floor cuz he hungry? and the only way to feed him was to, sleep with a man for a little bit of money
|
| |
Wonder why this band took a label, they'll prob come back on their feet but if they do it'll prob be with an independant modus operandi
|

yeah jk they aren't fucking retarded
|
| |
"aids idk if you're a canadian lawyer or something (that wub b sooooooooo cute!) but i dont think u know what u talkin bout homie"
haha. my dad is a lawyer but fuck that i am not.
listen, i'm not a retard. i know that the bit on the email is an automatic addition and in itself isn't legally binding, it's just a nice visual reminder that by sharing the email with millions of fans, they aren't doing themselves any legal favours.
"as for 'inferring' anything, do whatever you want there, all i'm saying is that weird shit happens in the shadows and we don't really know anything"
yeah fair enough. i agree, we don't really know anything. but it seems like Death Grips are being stupid fucks and I wouldn't be surprised if they got sued. I shouldn't have stated my opinion so aggressively.
and in regards to the talk about "oh if it had been godspeed or thrice you'd be praising them" I really don't think so. Having an issue with your label and giving them the finger is fine, I just think they're being really stupid with how they're dealing with this. and plus the vast majority of music fans really like these guys, i'm definitely in the minority in thinking that they're terrible.
"ps deviant you are an unbelievable fag (and i don't mean this in the homosexual way)...do you read your comments? I didn't know you were a lawyer/music executive/moral authority...same goes for you Aids..."
ok christ sorry. like I said, it was a mistake for me to have stated my opinion so aggressively. basically I find this story entertaining because of the way Death Grips are playing it. I'm not claiming to now any specifics about the case or about what the law is in regards to this, it just seems to me like they're not being smart about it.
|
| |
if thrice leaked their album early as an ef you to a major label, i would be very happy because it got released early. However, i wouldn't be calling them brave for doing so, nor would it change the fact that itd be an idiotic move on their part. the intent isn't what most people here are questioning, it's the action.
|
| |
so edgy
|
| |
also, if we're citing artistic integrity, we should also mention that they are failing in the business integrity section.
|
| |
Album delays? Bitch please, try being a Streetlight fan or a Broadway fan.
|
| |
ew why would i wanna bea fag
|
| |
Standing ovation standing ovation standing ovation
|
| |
so this especially if Thrice, or Opeth, or maudlin of the Well did it...i don't see how disregarding financial gain for the sake of artistic integrity (even if you don't like the art, they released it for their fans, without any hope for a monetary return except maybe some extra hype, but i have yet to meet anyone who knew about death grips before i told them) can be so maligned, haters just hating on something they wouldn't be brave enough to do in the same situation...ps deviant you are an unbelievable fag (and i don't mean this in the homosexual way)...do you read your comments? I didn't know you were a lawyer/music executive/moral authority...same goes for you Aids...
I thought we had enough punching bags, why did you come back?
|
| |
good 'ol will
|
| |
fag
|
| |
Couldn't get halfway through the first song. These guys aren't that special.
|
| |
I can't wait for the threads when they actually start getting sued. Should be a hoot.

For what? NLDW got them dropped from Epic but they have settled a while ago.
