SOPA is dead

2012-01-20 by Hugh G. Puddles STAFF | 85 Comments
The controversial copyright act SOPA (The Senate's Intellectual Property Act) was put on hold today after it was met with opposition by the public, a one-day Wikipedia blackout and Google petition that was signed by more than 7 million people. SOPA (and the accompanying act PIPA) were designed to take action against websites involved in copyright infringement, whilst forbidding search engines and legitimate websites from linking to them. This was met with outrage because of the view that it would greatly restrict internet freedom.

Look at 3/4 of the bills that are passed and you'll find they are not constitutional. Patriot Act, NDAA, hell even Rowe v. Wade isn't constitutional. I agree with the sentiment of it but it isn't constitutional.

Edit: sentiment of Rowe v. Wade, not that other shit that infringes on all of our rights as individuals in the US and outside of it.

The Feds. Because all they really need to take down foreign copyright infringers is international support and cooperation, which they already have. Just one more reason to show why these laws are redundant in unnecessary.

SOPA means shut up in greek

Yeah, that's true (=Σώπα), it's the imperative in Greek of the phrase "shut up".

On another note, since the Republicans are so despised in the US, how come they get voted on every election process???

betlwedl
January 21st 2012

Republicans aren't all despised, just people who use the internet and go on forums are generally younger and better educated, And both of these groups have a strong tendency to lean towards being Liberal. However, because they are so young they are less like to exercise their right to vote. On the other hand, Republicans appeal much more to older people who aren't necessarily as outspoken on the internet, but can still vote and are much more likely to do so.

Also lol at people who think that Anon DDOSing government sites again will get anything accomplished other than making more 60-year-old politicians who can't understand the internet even more infuriated and likely to try to pass even harsher laws.

But yeah, this is far from dead. Just put off enough so that it can fade out of the public eye before being passed.

People are goin "yea m/, our freedom 'n shit" but, well, this doesn't mean too much sadly. The truth is they have just learned that they can't expose us to their bills, because we'll rub it in their faces and make them out to be cheats. This only means they'll have to pass things in a much more veiled manner, and bypass that process of, you know, informing us about it

jdennis31

no one really was exposed to this bill omaha, that's why it even got so far in the first place, public ignorance. mainstream media definitely didn't expose the public to it, and the only reason people really knew was because the sites normal people use every day ie. google, wiki, craigslist, told them to protest it. tbh, i can see more people that were especially pissed off about SOPA takin a more active interest in what goes on in government

jdennis31

on the other hand, i find it hilarious that people fighting for our supposed freedoms didn't give a shit about NDAA passing, even with the signing statement obama put on it. shows that in america internet and free shit > personal freedoms and privacy

Worst week ever. Megaupload, fileserve and filesonic. The best three all gone. Unbelievable.

And please stop mentioning mediafire. Music is the least of the problems. No one wants to download stuff like 1080p rips split into 50+ 200mb parts. And no one is going to be uploading them either. There'll probably be less music too or it will at least take longer to be shared. 99% of what's on mediafire originates somewhere else. Just awful.

Much more than just the freedom of the internet is at stake with the SOPA bill. If it is passed, people will be quick to retaliate, and the effectiveness and fairness of our judicial system will be put to the test right under the focused and attentive watch of the people.

I'm very interested to hear the outcome of this..
