not a bad choice

Whoah.
|
| |
Big shoes to fill
|
| |
Dude is annoying.
They could have gotten someone way better.
|
| |
Won't replace his songwriting prowess. Next album will probably suck.
|
| |
cool story bro
|
| |
as a big dream theater fan, I'm seriously annoyed at how dream theater thinks that this is a big enough deal to make a 3 part documentary about this. like shut up.
also this dude seems alright, i guess only the next album will tell how this works out
|
| |
I dunno about this...
|
| |
Damn fucking shit I thought for sure that Zac Farro would get this gig, mega DISLIKE! ='(
|
| |
So now instead of ten minute drums solos we can look forward to
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
|
| |
Mangini's better than Portnoy, end of story.
|
| |
mega downgrade
|
| |
In a perfect comedic world they would've resurrected the Rev and had him join.
|
| |
Hope that Portnoy does a Wes Borland-esque comeback in a few years
|
| |
Most beats per minute? yay what a retarded record to hold.
|
| |
dude is awesome
|
| |
the record seems cool on paper, but that was the most boring minute of my life.
|
| |
ehh. whatever.
|
| |
Mike Mangina
|
| |
Most beats per minute? He should do grind or black metal instead.
|
| |
lololoolololololol
|
| |
So now instead of ten minute drums solos we can look forward to
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
YES
|

Mike Mangina [2]
lololoolololololol [2]
yep. i have nothing else to contribute here.

|
| |
Don't care.
|
| |
Dream Theater sucks anyway. whooooooo caaaaaaaaarrrres
|
| |
I don't like Mangini and I'm surprised Portnoy is not back to the fold. It's sad.
|
| |
portnoy will be back once the new fan base dissolves
|
| |
at least Rush still has Neil Peart
|
| |
Wow wasn't expecting him as a replacement.
|
| |
mike mangini is cool
portnoy and dream theater can foad for all i care
|
| |
Good replacement imo
|
| |
band has absolutely zero worthwhile material
|
| |
love their early stuff, but all the mindless wankage they're doing now needs to stop
|
| |
1247 bpm? thats it? lol
|
| |
he topped it
it's 1249 now. HIS POWERLEVEL KEEPS RISING
|
| |
He's ok. Not as creative as portnoy. I've lost all interest in this band anyway.
|
| |
Surprised they didn't try out Sean Reinart.
|
| |
Sean Reinart is waaaaay too good for this band.
|
| |
Have they not heard that Justin Bieber shreds the drums?
Not even an audition?
|
| |
huhuhuhuuhh so funneee
|
| |
it's 1249 now. HIS POWERLEVEL KEEPS RISING
soon it'll be....OVER NINE THOUSAND!
|
| |
hope portnoy pulls a bruce dickinson and comes back. theres something i dont like about mangini although he seems fully capable
|
| |
Maybe it is because he is goofy as fuck?
Just throwing that out there.
|
| |
MIKE PORTNOY IS PISSED!
|
| |
Great, they replaced one novelty with another.
|
| |
This will not end well. I honestly would've prefered Derek Roddy; he may be known for extreme metal, but is range is absolutely incredible.
|
| |
Jordan Rudess really does look like a wizard.
|
| |
soon it'll be....OVER NINE THOUSAND!
Wait til he pulls out the Kaio-Ken
|
| |
Mike Mangina [3]
lololoolololololol [3]
yep. i have nothing else to contribute here. [3]
|
| |
Safest choice they could make out of all 7 auditions by far. I'm really not surprised.
|
| |
Makes sense that they'd get the most competent-despite-lack-of-a-big-name drummer. This way they get the best quality, yet may kick him out in the event Mike Portnoy comes back.
|
| |
Marco Minnemann would have been epic
|
| |
Seems like a great replacement to me, dunno what everyone is on about. And whats with all the hate!? Ratings on the albums suggest that people generally like them...
|
| |
cool hes a good drummer
|
| |
Anyone dissing Mangini has no idea what he's capable of. The man is a monster. One of the best drummers I have ever known. So I'm definitely interested to see where this goes.
I thought for sure they were gonna choose Terry Bozzio or some shit. But this works. Definitely curious about the future.
|
| |
''The man is a monster''
more like a robot
|
| |
He's not figuring among my top 10 drummers, but I must admit he's dangerously talentuous actually.
|
| |
Marco Minnemann was by far the coolest drummer who auditioned
|
| |
^ this
|
| |
Now they just need a new vocalist.
|
| |
sweet now i can continue not listening to dream theater
nothing will ever touch scenes anyway
|
| |
sweet now i can continue not listening to dream theater
Best comment ever
|
| |
they're doomed to release shit
what they should do is retire and call Moore to write an album alone under the name Dream Theater
|
| |
thought you liked them sowing
|
| |
--Surprised they didn't try out Sean Reinart.--
That's who I was hoping they would pick, too. They could have also looked into Fates Warning's old drummer.
Anyway, even of the 7 people that they auditioned there were at least two I would have picked over this Mike.
|
| |
''if neil peart joined...''
Yeah he's The Professor after all.
|
| |
Aw man I was really hoping Varg would get the gig.
|
| |
"Now they just need a new vocalist."
They need to maintain their Canadian street cred.
Mike Mangina [9827583297503]
lawlz
|
| |
Great choice. The mini series they put out showing him was quite enjoyable.
Marco Minnemann would have been a close second. Hell, he's Paul Gilbert playing the drums after all. Not only talent wise but even looks.
|
| |
Mangini is one of the world's best drummers and anyone who contests that is an idiot.
|
| |
Can't wait for their new 1247 bpm jazz suite anthology.
|
| |
Cool choice. He's awesome.
Also, Mike Mangina [98798798798789]
|
| |
and Jordan Rudess is still the only real musician in this band.
|
| |
Goodbye Mike.
Welcome to the family, Mike!
|
| |
i just came to laugh
(laugh)
|
| |
Excellent choice. Same style of playing, same amount of skill.
|
| |
They replaced Mike Portnoy with Mike Mangini. I wonder if they did it just to take a stab at Portnoy. I'd be pretty devastated if my band hired a guy with the same name as me to take my place.
I don't get why they even bothered. Rudess has a metronome on his keyboard, amirite?
|
| |

this................
Can't wait for their new 1247 bpm jazz suite anthology.
lol yeah can't wait either.... :P
I watched that documentary they did while they were picking a drummer. First in line was Mangini, with whom the band seemed to get along really well. I realized immediately that DT had made their choice, based on really getting along with the new drummer, rather than using new potential to make NEW and EXCITING music.
Marco Minnemann and Derek Roddy would be great choices for me (especially Minnemann), but the DT guys just wanna continue being prog rock dinosaurs, they don't really care about re-inventing the wheel, their last 2-3 releases show just that.
I guess I'm going to have to continue ignoring them, as i do from 2005 and forth...
|
| |
voivod said it all
Roddy is a blastbeat titan and Minnemann is very inventive, they could have added new spirit to the band
|
| |
Donati was monstrous too.
The good thing about Mangini is that in concert someone is going to be actually head(body)banging.
I gotta admit, this is an improvement.
|
| |
Nothing sadder than my Dream Theater-fan Facebook 'friends' all emotionally posting 'welcome to the family' messages while proudly proclaiming how they're willing to accept Mangini with open arms.
They've made some fantastic music, but there's so much pathetic shit surrounding this band...
|
| |
i am just baffled that virgil donati didn't get the gig. easily the best of the bunch...
|
| |
also i dont think myung says anything the entire documentary
|
| |
Donati is fantastic, but he's too jazzy for DT.
|
| |
Lol they should replace james labrie
|
| |
Kingsoby1, i was actually surprised how much Myung did talk on the documentery. Was pleasing and he seemed more involved than he has been in years.
Hopefully a new drummer will breathe new life into Dream Theater, as even though I loved Black Clouds, I can't help but miss the old, more structured Dream Theater that focused on meaningful lyrics and more focused songs.
|
| |
Mangini = shredwank time
|
| |
mangini was definitely closest to being portnoy for sure
|
| |
Jeez, some people here will bitch about ANYTHING. I think it was a good choice. I can see why they chose him.I did like Marco a lot, and, if it were me, I would have chose him. At the same time, these dudes know what they want AND what they need, so I'm confident in their choice. Now all they have to do is put out a worthwhile album, which is something they haven't really done since Six Degree of Inner Turbulence.
|
| |
yeah and that wasn't even stellar compared to SFAM.
|
| |
Mike Mangina [4]
lololoolololololol [4]
yep. i have nothing else to contribute here. [4]
|
| |
Altmer sighting*
As for DT, let's see if they pass the final 'test/phase' with Mangini..
|
| |
The way I see it, Mike Portnoy was leading the band into a more metal direction, i'm glad that they didn't get any of the guys doin all the blast beats and stuff, cuz that'd make DT go further into metal territory, which is something they don't do well. Marco might have been able to breathe new life into the band, and creatively, I think he would have been the best choice, but I don't think they want to change their direction. Mike Mangini seemed to 1. be the best fit personality-wise and 2. seem like the most natural fit for their style of music. I can't see any of the other members actually fitting in as a true member of Dream Theater. Peter Wildoer would have fit in well IMO, but they said he's pretty much the quintessential metal drummer, which I don't think is what DT needs.
|
| |
James labrie has cancer
|
| |
Don't say that.
|
| |
world record holder for... "some bullshit douchebaggery that only riff nerds care about"
hope this guys drumset is smaller and maybe their music will make more sense
|
| |
That's like asking for the world to suddenly shrink to the size of the Moon.
|
| |
bring on the blast beats.
|
| |
eh. you cant replace.
|
| |
"and Jordan Rudess is still the only real musician in this band."
Although Scenes and Six Degrees (excellent) were the first two albums cut with him, it was when Rudess joined that Dream Theater began to devolve into a keyboard/guitar alternating weedly smeedly wankfest five-mil. The man lives to wank.
|
| |
Fantastic Choice! Minneman would have been brilliant but I think Mangini fits the profile a little better.
|
| |
wireless drum machine
|
| |
So anyway did you guys hear about this Osama guy that just recently died?
|
| |
Sean Reinart wouldn't really of been an ideal pick because his background just isn't...that so much, he has more of a jazzy touch, I don't know. Isn't to say he can't, but Mangini makes sense. Definitely an incredible drummer, got to see a clinic of his and was blown away. Marco or Wildoer would of been interesting, though I'm surprised that Virgil didn't just blow me away like he usually does. Kind of cool though, finally can say the dude is human.
The guy who plays in spiral architect would of been interesting at the audition. Don't care a ton for DT, but was drawn in just by the drummers alone.
|
| |
speed =/= technicality
|
| |
Why is everyone being so hard on the guy? I think he's great, he is a rapid drummer at the least, I'm sure if everyone gives him a chance he can produce some nice progressive metal beats. I'm not sure if he will live up to Portnoy however, he'll need time to settle, the next album might be a shock, but I reckon it will just become natural after a while.
|
| |
Osama = best camper ever
|
| |
Dude, he wasn't even a good camper. He just used Ghost Pro and Hacker behind his teammates to get his killstreaks.
|
| |
it's 1249 now. HIS POWERLEVEL KEEPS RISING
soon it'll be....OVER NINE THOUSAND!
He can increase his power level by concentrating it into a single beat!
|
| |
I'd like to see Dream Theater move back from heavy metal to more progressive rock. Don't know if that's happening now, but to be fair I haven't really heard this guy play or know what he's like.
|
| |
his a really good drummer, but idk about the new album, i fell its gonna be hit or miss with everyone
|
| |
At first I was thinking "Couldn't they find someone more fitting?". I wasn't too sure about this till I saw the 3-part documentary clips on youtube. Now I'm thinking "who else could they have chosen?". Of course the documentary was edited to make you feel that way to some degree, but I actually kinda like Mr. Mangini now. I hope they do something spectacular with this opportunity to change things up.
|
| |
Time will tell. I am open to seeing what happens.
|
| |
