"He discussed how America represents “dignity, freedom, renewal and hybridization,” and suggested that these qualities could be represented in a new form of black metal. He proposed a new rhythm to replace the blast beat: the “burst beat,” by which rhythm can contract and expand in time, as in free jazz. He cited Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and Ornette Coleman’s “Skies of America” as philosophical models, with their “joyful experience of the continuity of existence.” He talked of “life and hypertrophy” replacing “death and atrophy,”
that part made me chuckle
|
| |
fools.
|
| |
What is this I don't even
|
| |
Kind of pointless
|
| |
sorta like the black metal episode of bones
|
| |
no, just no
|
| |
lolwut
|
| |
title indicated disaster from the moment I read it
|
| |
why does american academia have to screw everything up?
|
| |
notihng like sitting in a room in NY listening to a bunch of pretentious douches talk about music they have absolutely NO clue about
|
| |
The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.
|
| |
well, i'll give them this
at least they admitted it was a controversial, taboo topic to even try and talk about using big words
|
| |
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, what?
|
| |
@americanmusicmachine, I remember that episode...it was cringeworthy and laughable all in one.
|
| |
"sorta like the black metal episode of bones"
That episode was amazing but pretty much innacurrate in every sense. Lol at corpse painted deathcore bands, Grinder Tapeworm, and the throat slitting.
|
| |
lol.....
|
| |
“The purest black-metal artist is one who’s unknown and inaccessible”
He's got a point. That's part of the paradoxes of BM.
"He chose a club with a bar as the setting, rather than a university, figuring it would be more “ludic.”"
A club with a bar. That's ludic. And, yea, ludic and black metal, that makes sense.
|
| |
That was an interesting article.
|
| |
i feel dirty
|
| |
He talked of “life and hypertrophy” replacing “death and atrophy,” and in his own way he was as nonnegotiable as Ovskum: “Our affirmation is a refusal to deny.”
Yeah that is the dumbest suggestion I've ever heard in my life.
|
| |
that was something else
|
| |
The state of the American academy is pitiful. I can't believe "scholars" have any time to devote thought to this horseshit, let alone to couch a public presentation on it in pomo jargon. Even if they flatter themselves by thinking that they're performing a vital task in assessing a widespread pop culture phenomenon (and that's what black metal is, no matter how "underground" it might seem). Black metal should not be interpreted, it should just be ruthlessly excoriated. At best, it should just be laughed at for being ontologically ridiculous.
Sound like you should have attended, my boy
|
| |
I think PrincipiaAesthetica has a stick in his ass.
|
| |
idk i thought the article was pretty cool
thought this was pretty much inevitable
|
| |
Black metal should not be interpreted, it should just be ruthlessly excoriated. At best, it should just be laughed at for being ontologically ridiculous.
you're saying this on sputnik?
let the fucking battle commence
|
| |
sure, feed the troll...
|
| |
o rly?
|
| |
look at me i use big words EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME
|
| |
Continuously threatening to take dumps on people and adopting the 'me against the world and the world is wrong' mentality isn't really doing much towards people taking you seriously. There isn't any reason to be so needlessly aggressive about your opinions. Trying to play the belligerent arts academic on an online music forum is a waste of everyones (but mostly your) time and will only encourage people to laugh off whatever you have to say, which would be a shame because you actually have a unique view of things.
|
| |
I'd rather see Black Metal dissect an Academic...
|
| |
yes, no time for black metal retards
|
| |
PrincipiaAesthetica's postings, step by step:
1. Have a thought.
2. Write down the thought.
3. Realize there is not enough superfluous verbiage.
4. Copy and paste into word processor.
5. Right click and select "thesaurus" on the words that need changing.
6. Click "submit".
7. Sadly not realize that this is Waior's shtick, and he does it much better. Ignominy!
Stupid article, though I am curious to hear this "burst beat"...
|
| |
oh shit.
it
is
on.
|
| |
“joyful experience of the continuity of existence.” He talked of “life and hypertrophy” replacing “death and atrophy,”
It wouldn't be black metal anymore.
|
| |
people with this much rage, when directed at a subtle topic, get me excited aka stoked
stoked
|
| |
six hours to match burzum's fave song lengths
|
| |
God damn how old are you guys?
|
| |
what the fuck were they even talking about in that article?
what the fuck is a burst beat?
what the fuck?
|
| |
In about 7 years, I'll be getting paid more than all of you put together to do this for a living.
you're not already getting paid more than a bunch of unemployed high school/college students?
|
| |
BLACK METAL IS SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS
|
| |
as soon as I saw the title for this I facepalmed
|
| |
Doesn't anybody else find it weird that a load of people who pretend to love music hate that other people love it enough to study it?
It should be, but then you realize we're talking about people who take black metal seriously. There is no reason to get worked up about this.
|
| |
This might be the main reason i don't listen to black metal.
But seriously, that's awesome that people have time to dissect metal. Where the hell can i sign up?!
|
| |
Meatplows avatar is win
|
| |
ugh
|
| |
it won't let me read the article, but i actually wish i could. i don't think there's anything wrong with academic discussion of black metal.
|
| |
wtf is a burst beat?
|
| |
FTA: “The purest black-metal artist is one who’s unknown and inaccessible,”
well, it seems like they got it right.
|
| |
now i know the difference between black metal and death metal
|
| |
"you're not already getting paid more than a bunch of unemployed high school/college students?"
lolololol
|
| |
HAHA FUCKING ADAM DOWNER LOL
|
| |
Was waiting for someone to quote Adam lol.
But it's a major lol to think that Immortal or Gorgoroth were thinking about the Council of Trent in 1564 when writing their lyrics.
|
| |
Article was interesting. Couple of the lecturers sounded like totally tools, including the only actual Black Metal artist there, but there WAS some pretty cool stuff being said as well. I have no problem with them trying to dissect it, its better than the usual academic response of 'people should stop listening to it'
|
| |
cool stuff.
|
| |
"I'd rather see Black Metal dissect an Academic..."
POW!
|
| |
So it took a bunch of academically significant people to tell us something we already knew? What the fuck was the point of this discussion? Still lol news though.
|
| |
troll is trying really hard. makes me giggle/
|
| |
Who's the troll?
|
| |
PrincipiaAesthetica I believe.
|
| |
Seems like they should have thrown in a few fans of the genre to give a more personal aspect to all these studies. Because most of this sounds like an old man trying to relate with his son and failing pretty bad.
And it's been said but...What the hell is a burst beat?
|
| |
Would explain the total lack of effect too
|
| |
PrincipiaAesthetica is awesome
|
| |
Burst beat = playing a beat and adding in bursts of 16th notes whether by gravity blast or just a normal roll.
|
| |
ok then
|
| |
"Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm the troll. But I'm not really trying very hard. This is all effortless."
Some people are just born to be trolls...embrace it! It is your calling!
|
| |
its funny how the stupidest opinions were not put across by "academics" but by the dude who's actually in a band. as has been said before making black metal "uplifting" or in any way positive would mean its no longer black metal. at it says in the very article "black represents a bleak outlook on life".
|
| |
@Principia: Quite so, my dear boy. Now, please, depart post-haste.
|
| |
Mhrm, I find such a delightful discussion such as this now exuberant. Murhrmha, a pleasuring back and forth of each Gentlemans witty opinion on a exquisite online webpage based upon the art of sound, or "sputnikmusic" as the adolescents are calling this now. Indeeeeed. *Takes puff from cigar*
|
| |
Article was interesting but not all that life-changin. No reason for the hostile responses it's gotten.
|
| |
Black metal should not be interpreted, it should just be ruthlessly excoriated. At best, it should just be laughed at for being ontologically ridiculous.
mmm yes; quite, lad.. needs moar 18th-19th century violins. *adjusts monocle*
|
| |
America's Black Metal sucks.
Just saying.
Danish Black Metal is amazing
|
| |
examples
|
| |
There are quite a few USBM bands which aren't terrible.
Xasthur + Leviathan =/= the entire USBM scene
|
| |
PrincipiaAesthetica: It's no surprise that you are a troll with a thesaurus. Though some trolls are without thesauruses, generally thesauruses are needed to interpret articles on random music websites at 11o'clock on a Thursday night because their users have too much dignity to do it themselves.
|
| |
@PrincipiaAesthetica:
Trolling is sooo 2 months ago. Get with it.
|
| |
Good God, give it up. No one really gives a damn...
|
| |
How is this news? Haven't you guys ever been to Anus.com? Academics write about black metal on there all the time.
|
| |
