New MCR Album Info

2009-12-01 by Observer EMERITUS | 72 Comments
My Chemical Romance have explained some of the new themes and song inspirations for their upcoming album. A major subject of interest will be how artists chase after fame.

Speaking to Spinner, Gerard Way discussed the album: "Every single record we make is a response to the last. But sometimes it's not only a response to the last record -- it's a response to the opinion of that record or a response to the world at the time of that record.

"There's a definite undercurrent of fame versus working class, people having stuff handed to them with zero talent versus working class kids that start a band. Rock 'n' roll is not red carpets and MySpace friends -- rock 'n' roll is dangerous and rock 'n' roll should piss people off. Right now, there's not a lot of that happening. What it is is a lot of people trying to be famous. That seems to be the goal.

"Instead of us panicking and trying to see where we can grab the money or grab the opportunity, we just wrote music instead. We tried to write a great record; that was our response to things. I think that writing a great record will sell records these days, as opposed to doing every other f---ing thing that people seem to be doing to sell a record."

Well, I feel some respect for Gerard Way thanks to this. When that album comes out, will check out. The Black Parade was great, expecting new album to be better.

"Rock 'n' roll is not red carpets and MySpace friends"

seems pretty ironic.

But props to Gerard Way for viewing it this way. Band isn't as bad as all the h4rdc0r3 kidzzzz like to believe.

Ya know, I actually dislike MCR but I just gained like, a kilogram of respect for them. He pretty much phrased that perfectly. I will be checking out their newer album then.

"Rock 'n' roll is not red carpets and MySpace friends"

unfortunately that's exactly what it is nowadays. that isn't what it's SUPPOSED to be though.

so we'll see if MyChem can follow through and transcend the rest of the music scene. i for one am extremely skeptical, but who knows. they may shock me...i have always thought they had a lot of potential.

Okay, it's a step in the right direction. Now all that remains is for them to follow up on that statement and make a good record.

He does raise a good point about the lust for fame, though. This is the era where everyone is chasing the Cinderella story, only with more proverbial rape.

I don't know why everyone's acting like what gerard way said was insightful.
It wasn't, any old twit can make the statements he made in that article, and what's more, it's a bit rich of him to say
"rock n roll isn't about myspace friends and red carpets"
when
A: I'm pretty sure MCR got a huge kickstart through sites like myspace
and
B: He doesn't really quallify as rock n' roll royalty who can make those kinds of statements. Especially since most bands of their ilk in no way resemble traditional rock n' roll

(despite all this, their past albums have all been good, and I look foward to this next one)

Society Sellout

I just read through the comments on that article... People really think this is a new idea? That the concept that Gerard is putting forth hasn't been around for a couple of decades? Jesus christ people need to educate themselves a little more. Attempting to preserve the 'dignity' of rock and roll is such an arrogant and egotistical thing for one band to try to do. "Oh look at me, I'm better than other bands because I'm trying to protect rock and roll from becoming mainstream like it has been for the past 50 years." Come on...

This was a great gem:

Oh my god, Gerard's mind is like no other's, isn't it? Those words could only come from a true genius...

I feel for this guy. If you think Gerard's mind is "like no other's" you are living amongst a bunch of clones.

Just watch "Life on the Murder Scene". You think this article gives a new respect for the band? "Life on the Murder Scene" will completely change how any haters feel even if they still don't like their music. This band is doing it purely because it's what they want to do and they could care less if they are the next big thing, they just want to play music for people who want to listen.

He was pissed at the black parade. He (Gerard) didn't like the way everything went and how popular they got and the "emo" term that was placed on them. It almost made them quit as a band but then he said fuck that and wants to prove everyone wrong and knows that the true fans don't give a shit what anyone thinks. And please don't think that I'm trying to turn you guys to different opinions, I respect all of yours and it's okay if you don't like them.

Let me re-phrase what I said above. The band loves the material on TBP, they just didn't love the fan reaction and stardom they received from it. I know you don't care, but all the members in this band I truly believe don't care about the stardom or money. All of them have normal lives and are married and most of them have kids. They want to be normal people during the day and rock out at night. They don't choose to be popular or thrown in the mainstream group. Say a band like An Albatross all of a sudden got huge and super popular would they be considered mainstream crap because of that? Yeah MCR is popular and has a lot of fans, but I'm sure they didn't say "Hey, lets make this next album to where we are huge and famous and a ton of screaming girls like us".

I know but I mean when you go and play on mtv numerous times and have your videos there constantly, even have this huge movie like promo ad for the album that then cuts to the band marching with fans behind them then you play on top of a mtv building outside with lights all around you...I mean what do you expect is going to happen. They started playing arenas and had merch up the ass and they really whored themselves out in everywhere possible.

see the reason he feels obligated to say stupid shit like he said up there is because people frame the stuff you talk about in this quote as a bad thing. this is not a bad thing as far as im concerned. I really couldn't give less of a shit. As long as the record's good--and youll remember, TBP got a lot of praise--i'm glad they get hyped. Doesnt change how it sounds in my headphones...

They are my favorite band. I managed to follow them from the start so I was able to avoid most the the stupid fan girls. It's getting hard now though, they all bombarded the main .com site but the MCRmy is still old school. They don't let people join anymore and they have a strict strict policy about that stupid fan girl stuff. One comment or post about or anything resembling "OMGZ!! GERARD IS SOO HOT!!" then you get kicked out. I think it's kinda funny how lame they are accept when you see them at a concert, then it gets annoying.

Sounds life threatening, I can only imagine the pain you must have been going through. If you ever get the chance try to see them in a small club in the north (Jersey, Philly area). I think they are doing a mixed of stadiums and club shows next tour. The majority of the people at the small clubs will probably be more committed fans who want to hear the band rather then themselves and other pre-teen girls screaming AHHHHHHH!!! GERARD!!!!!!!!! Plus the small teen girls would be trampled on since there would be no sitting or anything and they would get moshed to death.
