There are a very visible part of the post-rock scene right now. You don't have to enjoy a band's work to acknowledge them.

geasoftime 01.16.13	Tim Hecker is ambient. Aglaia is ambient. Brian Eno is ambient. Eluvium isn't ambient. I wasn't going to confine myself to a narrow definition of post-rock, because that would force me to exclude far too many bands that really deserve to be on this list. Eluvium may not be traditional post-rock, but it's close enough to be included.

I was hoping that this would make it easier for a post-rock fan to find what has taken me months to find. Since everyone is sooo preoccupied with the title, I'm going to delete the title and hopefully the content will speak for itself.

geasoftime 01.17.13	I had initally titled the thread "Seventy five quintessential post-rock groups", but 'quintessential' was a too strong for everyone, so I changed it to "post-rock for beginners" to satisfy everyone. Apparently that's no good either, and so I'm at a loss what to title this. I honestly just wanted to help people learn more than Godspeed and Explosions in the Sky. I guess this really only applies to those who are already familiar with the genre to catch the few bands they haven't heard on the list. Definitely not for an unbloodied initiate.
geasoftime 01.17.13	I heard For My Parents before I heard Hymn. I had only really listened to GSYBE, Silver Mt Zion, Album Leaf, and Sigur Ros before this year. I had been listening to alot of black metal before that. I can see where people are disappointed with FMP, but when I first heard it I was actually blown away by how good it was, or how good Mono was in general. I still consider it a 4. Hymn is obviously going to be a hard act to follow, but if you don't think of For My Parents in terms of Hymn it is really an enjoyable record.

geasoftime 01.17.13	I didn't want to get into a Mono debate but I was going to say the same thing. Walking Cloud is definitely their best album. But, it's honestly such a close thing that you could make a case for any of the three. Theyre all fantastic.

I don't know how people can dislike post-rock so much, I never tire of it. @DrMaximus: I wouldn't consider GSYBE to be one of my favorites either. I think F#A#infinity is one of the best post rock albums ever, but there's at least ten groups that I like more overall. @minty: I'm heading to Youtube after I'm done typng this, in that case. I was unaware that there was new material in circulation. Do you have any recommendations, other than Echotide (I'm downloading them as I type)?

geasoftime 01.19.13	Jizue, Jaga Jazzist, and Tortoise are all very jazzy. Kashiwa Daisuke and Yasushi Yashida lean towards neo-classical. Red Sparowes and Russian Circles sound metal(ish), but are fundamentally post rock. Lights Out Asia, Helios, Fridge, Aurore Rien are all Electronic/post-rock hybrids. That's not comprehensive, just what I can come up with off of the top of my head. Feel free to message me in my shoutbox thing if necessary. I probably won't check this list again for sometime.
