|Exams Can Fuck Right Off, Yeah?|
Exams all done, semesters out and the celebrations are all planned out. Four weeks of crazy antics and a hint of skiing at the end of it should see me in fine form, oh yes. Digs.
Dirty Edits Vol. 1
Alright, lets not mince words here, this is one of the coolest and best dance collections I've heard in nearly forever. One of the slickest blends of disco and house and with hints of soul and even dirty blues numbers, this is creeps up subtly without ever becoming overbearing and is just frikkin amazing.
|2|| ||Kitsune Maison|
What I love about Maison mixes is that they're pretty much a taste of everything that hip about the French dance scene, and their latest is no exception. This one slides into more indie territory, and those with an ear to this ground would have found Phoenix and La Roux here before most of the mainstream media.
Guns Dont Kill People... Lazers Do
It's Diplo and Switch mixing up Jamaican dancehall for a mainstream MTV audience. And it works. Ridiculous concept aside (Jamaican commando loses his arms, replaced by experimental lazers...), this is so much fun.
I can't remeber the last time a synth-pop princess made so many waves within the scene, but La Roux are certainly creeping their way up there. Fiery red hair and disco influenced 80s dance love just could be a match made in heaven... if you're into that sort of thing. Like Roisin Murphy but more hip.
|5||Poison The Well|
The Tropic Rot
This is Poison The Well at their most experimental, playing with swirling textures of aggressiveness and light sprinklings of airy passages and creating something fairly unique. I'm not so sure they pull it off as well as they could have though.
Black Clouds And Silver Linings
Jeez, it's another DT album. And it's everything you might expect, whatever that may be. Put it this way, I didn't expect much.
Been hearing these guys name been thrown around for a long time now, and it took their latest release for me to actually check them out. If I heard this even a few years ago, this would have probably blown my mind, but like most metal it just feels dated now. Gotta keep searching I guess.
|8||Holler, Wild Rose!|
Our Little Hymnal
These something about that name that just so cool hey? 'Holler, Wild Rose!' Unfortunately it's not something that reflects in the music - if you're after some slightly different post-rock with an emphasis on the rock, be my guest, but other than that, well, its OK.
|9|| ||Margot and the Nuclear So and So's|
The Dust Of Retreat
Checked this out on the strength of Bitstream's review and the first impression sounds like a cross of Stars, Lydia and The Spill Canvas, with maybe a bit more meat. So I guess pretty, textured indie. I like Stars and Lydia and I hate the Spill Canvas. This lies somewhere in between.
I'm gonna be honest, nothing Spenser Krug has ever done has really impressed me. Wolf Parade, Swan Lake, older Sunset Rubdown. It's not like he writes bad music, only that his melodies and such are just always way to slippery to make any serious impact. Dragonslayer might just be a step to remedy that, but it still doesn't pack the punch I've been waiting for.
Today's Active Lifestyles
Polvo have always been on my radar, but it's not been until their brilliant new single Beggar's Bowl that I've decided to seriously check them out. It's the sort of record you'd expect from a Touch And Go release, angular, mathy rock with a punk attitude to match. Cool stuff.
This flowed straight from my checking out Polvo, and I've heard Rodan be compared to Slint more than enough times to have gotten my interest up (I love Slint). Its the sound of skeletal, spidery guitars and aggressive hardcoreish influences all in one, wafting in and out of each other with some really rippin' results.
|my semester just started, harsh times ahead|
|I just retook my Physics exam last Wednesday. Didn't make it the first time.|
|I always thought Krug's melodies were subtlely brilliant!|
Also, hooray for being in learniversity and finishing exams a few months ago
|summer gonna be awesome|
