Drummerboy123
10.07.17 | "some love it, some hate it."
So basically just like the first one then? The original is my fave film so I've got lofty expectations, never cared for the action so I'm not worried about being bored, I love the world and want to see how it's progressed with some eye candy cinematography.
Gonna go see it Sunday. |
Papa Universe
10.07.17 | Jared Leto is a fine villain. He's interesting and good enough to carry his scenes, but don't expect anything outstandingly impressive. He does his job, but his character is somewhat restricted personality-wise. |
StrikeOfTheBeast
10.07.17 | Seeing it this Sunday and expecting it to be pretty good at the least. The first was a polarizing classic that has deep themes and gorgeous setpieces. |
Papa Universe

Keyblade

StrikeOfTheBeast
10.07.17 | Now that's how to make a sequel good. |
DrGonzo1937
10.07.17 | Deep themes? Hardly. It's all pretty shallow imo, nowhere near as deep as the first. Visually it's absolutely gorgeous.
As for Leto he was a bit bland. His wing-women was terrifying in it though. |
Keyblade
10.07.17 | idk I think the themes were even deeper this time with the introduction of joi and the implications on consciousness as well as the whole concept of feelings and memories that we're only briefly touched upon in the first one |

DarkSideOfLucca
10.07.17 | Hey I was just about to start a thread like this. I didn't think threads opened up for another film, it felt pretty complete to me. A third film would feel weird at this point. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it's obviously not going to compare to the original which is arguably one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. |
Astral Abortis
10.07.17 | I imagine the film will look amazing but I’m also sure it will further destroy the source material. As a lover of the original novel, when I saw the first film I was massively disappointed by how they neutered brilliant story and characterisation with dreamscape unicorns, and I imagine this new film will further make a mess of things |
DrGonzo1937
10.07.17 | ****Spoilers****
The loose ends that were unresolved and felt like there was going to be a continuation: Goslin's origin was never fully explained, only hinted at; the Replicant revolution that was about to kick-off; and the fact Leto's character wasn't heard from again after Deckard meets him for the first time.
Telling ya, there's loads they could do to make another one. A lot of the topics in the film were only touched on, never fully fleshed out. And though you could say it's left to viewer interpretation, I'm just pointing out a couple of things where they could easily do a third film. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.07.17 | @Dr Gonzo - Ah, I totally see what you mean but I don't want those things (except for the revolution maybe) expanded upon. I liked that they were just subtle puzzle pieces for us, but I get how they could make a third one. I just hope they don't. Here are some thoughts for now:
::SPOILERS::
::SPOILERS::
1. This movie was gorgeous af. Which didn’t surprise me in the least but I was still blown away by the visuals the entire time.
2. So glad they revealed that Ryan Gosling was a replicant immediately. He made me ache in the best possible way the entire time. I wanted to hug him every minute.
3. An almost absurd amount of red herrings. Like, really. But they totally made you feel just as crushed as K when he realized he wasn’t the one. But the SHARING OF MEMORIES THING, GORGEOUS. TALK ABOUT EMPATHY!
4. The snow at the end vs. the rain. Moments freezing and becoming meaningful instead of fading away.
5. Luv (or Love? idk). Actually wish we got more of her. v much a victim of enslavement as she survived via priding herself on being the best slave. But then you had moments where she was hyper emotional, like when Wall-fuck killed the replicant in front of her.
6. Oh, yah, loved the digital love story. How she seemed to be evolving at a slower rate but still evolved and I think she loved him for real idc what you think
7. The fight scene with the holograms blew my mind. So did the love scene. THE MUSIC WAS GREAT THERE. The old lounge music juxtaposed with industrial yells is like... a Mood™ tbqh
8. Bautista was amazing
That's all for now but I have a lot more thoughts |

we have no idea what happens with Leto's character and dont really have much insight into his ambitions apart from his immediate plans

K’s journey to becoming ‘human’
The continuation of the original Bladerunner story
The aims of being more human than human in comparison to the Williams corporations aims and ideals.

It’s a fucking classic.

Drummerboy123
10.08.17 | Just seen it now. Was everything I wanted in a Blade Runner sequel. I don't think it tops the original (as someone else said it's my fave film too) but goddamn does it come close. Incredible acting, sound design, soundtrack and the cinematography is the best I've ever seen in a film. If Roger Deakins doesn't win an oscar for it then there's truly no justice in this world.
I liked how the film played on the audience's notion and hope of K being Rachael's son and then ripping the rug from underneath you, making you truly feel K's sense of loss and meaningless when it was actually a daughter and K was just the replicant decoy. His story is truly a tragedy though I do believe Joi did actually love him. It expands on the themes of the first a lot, although naming characters Joi and Luv is a bit on the nose for me. It's a film that stays in your head way after you've watched it and makes you question if love, memory, feeling, soul etc can just be made in a lab. I love that they didn't outright just say Deckard is a replicant but just blurred the lines even more, I hope Tyrell purposefully made Deckard and Rachael to fall in love just to see if replicants could get pregnant. The mirrored ending of the original with K dying in the snow against Roy dying in the rain was a nice touch but i'm ngl I shed a tear when that score came in right at the end, amazing reference to the original.
Also that love scene tho...shit had me trippin' ballz.

10.09.17 | This movie is better than the original in every way possible. Every frame of this movie is like a piece of art. Superb cinematography and possibly the best use of technology used in any film ever. It stayed true to the original, yet perfected all the flaws of the original. The original is great, but mostly for its production over its story. This film kept similar pacing to the original and never felt dull, as well as, giving an intriguing story and characters. Denis Villeneuve is one of the greatest directors alive today. I hope they give him a remake of Dune to him since Alejandro Jodorowsky never got to do his rendition.

Dune the book is amazing, haven’t seen the film. Arrival is fucking rubbish.
Anyway, people saying this betters the original are a bit misguided. The original has molded every single piece of sci-fi that has been created in the last 35yrs.
The innovation in that film is a one off, even this sequel still harkens back to it. As a film though this is right up there.
|
TalonsOfFire
10.09.17 | I think lovers of the original who can't get into 2049 should just keep in mind that in the context of modern movies with a budget like this, 2049 is a godsend.
It's supposed to be different from the first one, set 30 years in the future and taking that amazing realized world into a bigger direction, since the original is basically a straightforward neo-noir detective story in an amazingly realized sci-fi future. The villain was by far the most interesting character; that movie was all about the atmosphere and mood.
2049 did a great job being its own thing and amplifying the plot and characters, and doing the atmosphere and mood just as well in a different way. If it were more similar to the original, many fans would be complaining that it's just copying it and not being its own thing. |

10.10.17 | i hate to be that guy, but people are fuckin retarded showing up in droves for Transformers and The Hangover and whatever other horseshit, but then let a movie like this fall by the wayside. makes my inner elitist's blood boil. |
DrGonzo1937
10.10.17 | Doesn't take much to realise why we go so much dumb shit and remakes these days.
You branch out and do something different and get fucked for it. |
Keyblade
10.10.17 | ppl go to the movies to be entertained/thrilled. transformers and the like are a good source of cheap entertainment (not transformers tho, they suck even looking at it that way)
i doubt many ppl who arent already fans of blade runner would be too enthused by a 3 hour philosophical cyberpunk film...despite the trailer's best efforts to make it seem like an action movie lol |
XingKing
10.10.17 | People really do just want mindless entertainment for an hour and a half. It's a shame but such is life. |
Keyblade
10.10.17 | wouldn't say it's a shame, I'm the same way. it's good fun especially with other ppl. I prefer watching the more thought provoking/atmospheric movies at home anyway
good thing a out 2049 is that it was gorgeous and the soundtrack was dope, so the irony is ppl did miss out on a good cinematic experience |
Futures
10.10.17 | the actual shame is challenging and thoughtful movies often bomb and that's why we don't get them often. this is a 200 million dollar art film which won't happen again for a while. and that sucks |
NorwichScene
10.10.17 | Watched it last night, was great although bit too long 8/10 |
Drummerboy123
10.10.17 | I'd say it's more to do with escapism. People want to leave their lives behind for a couple of hours, not be faced with themes of what it means to be human from a 3 hour art film. |
XingKing
10.10.17 | A 3 hour film about what it means to be human is my escapism. |
ryu
10.10.17 | Surely this is Roger Deakins year. That was one of the most jaw dropping visual experiences I've ever had in a cinema. There's no Lubezki movies this year anyway so it's a two horse race between Hoyte van Hoytema (Dunkirk) and Deakins. And just as Skyfall was the superior movie to Spectre, you can put that down to Deakins cinematography.
Blade Runner 2049 also confirms Villeneuve is a visionary of the highest quality.
For a nearly 3 hour movie I was invested visually and emotionally in almost every frame. Can't wait to revisit this world again. |
ryu
10.10.17 | The fan service and nods to the original Blade Runner were so tastefully done in this movie. You had the audio recordings of the Voight-Kampf tests from 1982, the photos of Rachel from 1982, and then Villeneuve played his ace in the pack when the reveal of that model Rachel came out to Deckard. At first I thought how the fuck are they gonna make the "Finkle is Einhorn" lady look like herself 30 years ago and then as I slowly realised it was a CGI copy of Rachel my mind was tripping the fuck out. |
Keyblade
10.10.17 | was it CGI? i thought it was just somebody who looked like her dressed in the same outfit. she didnt look 100% like her which is why i thought that. if it was CGI then that is fucking impressive. i had no clue. usually u can tell no matter how well done |
bloc
10.10.17 | How'd that trillion dollar corporation fuck her clone up by getting the eye colour wrong though? I hope someone was fired for that blunder. |
zakalwe
10.10.17 | Deckard was taking the piss. I loved that bit. |
VaxXi
10.10.17 | If it was CG, then we figured out why the budget for the film was so damn high. |
XingKing
10.10.17 | They cast an actress who looks like Sean Young and then CG'd her face to make it closer. I thought it didn't look 100% Sean Young either, like the shape of the jaw or something was off but when she walked out onscreen, I was mesmerized. |

10.11.17 | If the replicants are robots/androids/whatever, why are they made to breathe air? The bad girl wouldn't have drowned at the end then. |
zaruyache
10.11.17 | she looked noticeably different, but good enough to pass for the film. |
zaruyache
10.11.17 | also yeah pls someone do an adaptation of Neuromancer. I'm actually reading Count Zero right now. |
Taxt
10.11.17 | This was the best movie I've seen in the theater in ages. Really great. |
Keyblade
10.11.17 | "If the replicants are robots/androids/whatever, why are they made to breathe air? The bad girl wouldn't have drowned at the end then."
they're made as close to human as possible. so that means with dna and organic-ish body parts etc |
bloc
10.11.17 | Ah. Still a strange thing to add though. |
beefshoes
10.11.17 | The original was flawless I think, it and William Gibson's Neuromancer are the best contributions to Cyberpunk in my view (I don't think that it should have a movie), and I just don't see the need for the update.....it didn't end with open ends justifying another chapter. |
kris.
10.11.17 | ok but still go see 2049 because despite your objections it's a fucking fantastic movie |
Gameofmetal
10.11.17 | "How'd that trillion dollar corporation fuck her clone up by getting the eye colour wrong though? I hope someone was fired for that blunder."
feel like murder might be closer to how they deal with poor employee performance tbh XD |
Veldin
10.11.17 | Excited to see this. Glad to see SOME peeps are being respectful with spoilers here |
Relinquished
10.11.17 | "it didn't end with open ends justifying another chapter."
it actually was meant to end open-ended. there are different versions. |

10.11.17 | Maybe it is because I saw it in an older theater but I was much less impressed by the landscape visuals in this movie compared to the first one. |
XingKing
10.11.17 | Saw it in IMAX and it was awe inspiring how beautiful it was. |
Keyblade
10.11.17 | fuck why am i broke rn, i wanna watch it again |
Futures
10.11.17 | def seeing it again in 2d imax soon. can't wait. such a dense movie, so much to take in. i wanted to see it again immediately after leaving the first time. i think i will enjoy it even more the 2nd time. |
Drummerboy123
10.12.17 | I've seen it 3 times now...it gets even better. Seriously this might be my 2nd fave film of all time behind the original... |
literallyzach
10.13.17 | i saw this last weekend high off my ass in imax and i have to say it was probably my favorite film going experience of the year. jared leto sucked but everything else was so sublime and evocative, i really was shocked how well it worked |
hal1ax
10.13.17 | Saw it last night. Loved it. |
zaruyache
10.13.17 | i hope to see it again tmrw. I think I need a second viewing to figure out how I feel about it, and it all looked so pretty idek about paying again. |

It’s this sort of stuff that makes people think yanks are the biggest bunch of cunts who walk the planet.

10.13.17 | This was 10/10 for me, loved it |
Rowan5215
10.14.17 | finally saw it
literally so much better than the original by a matter of degrees; arguably the best sequel in history or at least top 5
phenomenal movie |
DoofusWainwright
10.14.17 | I prefer it to the original too.
Only facet it scores lower in is originality...but you can’t blame a sequel for not being 100% original - that would be a contradiction in terms |
smaugman
10.14.17 | I really liked it |
StrikeOfTheBeast
10.14.17 | Excellent film. It felt like an organic introduction to sequels. I might even like it as much as the first, if not a bit more in some aspects. |
Rowan5215
10.14.17 | literally the only aspect the original has over this is the score imo - really coulda done without the huge Inception BWEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHH noise every few minutes, especially in a film as subtle and beautiful as this. if an alternate cut with El-P's soundtrack ever drops it will become a classic |
StrikeOfTheBeast
10.14.17 | I think it will become a classic regardless. |
NorwichScene
10.14.17 | Ana De Armas is stunning. She was fit af in knock, knock and somehow even more beautiful in this |
teamster
10.14.17 | Stupid question #142 : Do I need to see the original first? Always meant too... |
Futures
10.14.17 | just watch it. you don't really have to because this can be enjoyed on it's own but you will get a lot more from it if you watch the first. |
Drummerboy123
10.14.17 | There are some references that will go over your head and some cool callbacks to the original, but it is it's own story. Rachael plays a big part in it though so it's better going in knowing who she is without the film having to explain it. |
Valkoor952
10.14.17 | I do think you kinda have to watch the first one, to better understand the story. |
zaruyache
10.14.17 | The reveals might be even better if you don't know who or what Rachael was to the original story, though, so going in cold might even be better.
Just got back from my second viewing and I like it a whole lot more now. The super loud soundtrack was still kind of annoying, but otherwise it's a great film. |
Deathconscious
02.01.19 | i finally got around to this. i loved it. it sucks that it didnt make much money, i would really love more high budget sci fi that doesnt suck. |
