A Guide to Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal
Let's face it - symphonic and melodic black metal sucks more often than not for the most part, whether due to extreme cheesiness or lack of technical ability. However, there are a handful of seriously cool records that have come from these genres, but most of them are pretty obscure or under-appreciated. |
1 | | Dimmu Borgir Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
Easily the most obvious group of this genre, Dimmu Borgir's early work embodies what makes this work when executed properly. This group is pretty polarizing, but they put out a handful of what I consider fairly great albums in the mid-late 90's, this being their best.

2 | | Old Man's Child In Defiance of Existence
Another staple band within these genres is Old Man's Child - they even did a split with Dimmu Borgir at one point. This record in many respect may be one of the best the genre has to offer.

3 | | Limbonic Art Moon In The Scorpio
These guys were really dark and almost overly occult in approach. This is dripping with evil atmosphere and at times it can definitely come off as a tad cheesy, but I've always had a soft spot for this album and it's my favorite of this style. Their follow up record was excellent as well.

4 | | Lunar Aurora Elixir of Sorrow
Less symphonic than almost any other record on this list, but also better than most of them. This is a killer album front to back.

5 | | Graveworm When Daylights Gone
The underrated debut record from a group who grew into one of the genre's biggest names. The vocals certainly could have been better, but hey.

6 | | Bishop Of Hexen The Nightmarish Compositions
One of the only bands to really do symphonic black metal right post-2000 was Bishop of Hexen. They may sound a lot like a Dimmu Borgir clone but they've been around nearly just as long as made a great 2 records in their own right.

7 | | Obtained Enslavement Witchcraft
Some of the best stuff within the genre, no question.

8 | | Sirius Aeons Of Magick
I liked this one a bit more than the follow up album, another excellent slab of symphonic black metal.

9 | | Odium (NOR) The Sad Realm of the Stars
This is very similar to some of Limbonic Art's work, so if you dig them, you'll absolutely want to get on this one.

10 | | Ninnghizhidda Blasphemy
Pretty unique stuff that didn't quite reach excellence, but it's still a rather good record with a bunch of interesting spots throughout the record.

11 | | Carpe Tenebrum Majestic Nothingness
Killer, dark symphonic stuff.

12 | | Salacious Gods Askengris
Solid riffing and song writing despite a really cheesy album cover.

13 | | Dark Fortress Tales from Eternal Dusk
Their debut record is still my favorite, followed closely by their sophomore attempt.

14 | | Noctes Pandemonic Requiem
This is some top-teir melodic black metal stuff that never got the praise it deserved. Check it out immediately.

15 | | Vinterland Welcome My Last Chapter
This one is a given if you like melodic black metal, but I figured I'd drop it in anyway.

16 | | Frozen Shadows Dans les Bras des Immortels
Another underground gem that went largely unnoticed.

17 | | Obsidian Gate The Nightspectral Voyage
Holy hell is this album good, get it now. It may even top Limbonic Art as my favorite, I go back and forth on these two all of the time.

18 | | The Darksend Antichrist in Excelsis
This album rips, just listen.

19 | | Thurisaz Scent of a Dream
Tremendous album that has less than half of the attention it really should here.

20 | | Vesperian Sorrow Regenesis Creation
These guys play a fairly technical brand of symphonic black metal that works really well.

21 | | Bal-Sagoth Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne
This group can be super cheesy at times, but they helped in part to define the symphonic sound in the mid-90's that many bands would emulate and improve upon in the coming years.

22 | | Cradle of Filth Midian
The first "black metal" band everyone is introduced to in high school. This is probably my favorite from them.

23 | | Sacramentum Far Away from the Sun
Second only to 24 and 25 on this list, this album slays and is the best melodic black metal has to offer.

24 | | Emperor In the Nightside Eclipse
An absolute classic.

25 | | Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane
The best of the best, look no further for the cream of the crop when it comes to melodic black metal.
