Metal Roots - Influential Pre-80's

30 bands from before the 80's who were very influential on heavy metal music. I've probably missed some obvious ones so please shout if there are any glaring omissions.
1The Kinks
Something Else by The Kinks

Often labelled under the British Invasion or even Baroque Pop these guys were a huge influence on the harder edged psych/blues groups of the late 60's. While not especially heavy they often produced music which was driven by crunchy guitar riffs.
2Vanilla Fudge
Vanilla Fudge

A major American link between psych/blues and metal. They introduced a harder rocking edge to their music which stood out at the time and influenced a whole host of contemporaries.
3Cream
Disraeli Gears

In some ways this is the British equivalent of Vanilla Fudge. Recognisably blues based with trappings of psychedelia but with a much harder edge than what people were used to at the time.
4Blue Cheer
Vincebus Eruptum

These chaps are often cited as late 60's 'metal pioneers' alongside the likes of Iron Butterfly and Steppenwolf.
5MC5
Kick Out The Jams

A major influence on punk as well as metal. Their energetic and sometimes menacing hard-hitting sound was revolutionary at the time.
6The Stooges
The Stooges

Probably one of the most influential bands of all time. Influenced all sorts of genres including punk, goth, grunge, alt rock and metal.
7Kiss
Destroyer

While considered something of a joke by many critics there is no doubt that Kiss heavily influenced the glam metal scene of the 80's.
8The Jeff Beck Group
Truth

Beck's mastery of his instrument and willingness to experiment allowed him scope to produce sounds on the guitar that were unheard of up to that time. A big influence on the metal guitar players that followed.
9Grand Funk Railroad
Grand Funk

While undeniably a blues based these guys were a large influence on metal.
10The Who
Who's Next

Linked to the British mod scene in their early days there is no denying that this band was a big influence on hard rock and metal - from Daltrey's powerful vocal style to Townsend's overblown rhythm guitar.
11Led Zeppelin
Houses of the Holy

Obviously not a metal band but has been a lasting influence on metal throughout the years. Plant's stage presence and vocal style almost wrote the book for strutting hard rock and metal vocalists. Page's heavy riffing and lead guitar histrionics and Bonham's powerful drumming were also a basic template for many metal bands. Funk metal ? Groove metal ? - look to Led Zep.
12Queen
Sheer Heart Attack

The early music of Queen includes hard rock and bombastic, overblown productions which have influenced many genres including prog metal and melodic metal.
13Jimi Hendrix
Live at Woodstock

Firmly rooted in the blues. But Jimi's guitar playing was a huge influence on many guitarists wishing to crank it up and bring guitar virtuosity to the fore.
14Thin Lizzy
Jailbreak

The twin guitar tones of Thin Lizzy were an influence on many of the NWOBHM bands and commercial metal bands.
15UFO
No Heavy Petting

Out of the most well-known British hard rock bands in the 70's UFO were probably the most melodic. They influenced new wave metal groups such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard.
16Rush
2112

A heavy prog band during their peak period, Rush have influenced a whole host of prog metal groups. Lifeson was a riffmeister up there with Page.
17 Deep Purple
In Rock

Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple and Rainbow was the founding father of the neo- classical movement.
18Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath

The first true metal band. The blues has been all squeezed out.
19Judas Priest
Sad Wings of Destiny

Refined the metal sound, added more melody and were one of the major proponents of the twin lead guitar sound.
20Motorhead
Overkill

Fused hard rock with punk and influenced speed metal and thrash
21Accept
Accept

An influence on many sub genres inc thrash, power metal and melodic metal
22Venom
Black Metal

An influence on thrash and the progenitors of black metal (ok it's not quite before 1980 but I wanted 30 bands not 29 sorry)
23Van Halen
Van Halen

A large influence on the hair and glam metal bands of the 80's. Eddie's virtuosity and wang bar prowess influenced a whole generation of wannabe metal guitarists.
24Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden

The product of influences from 70's metal and hard rock bands such as Sabbath, Priest, Budgie and UFO. Add in a bit of prog rock leaning and high energy. Iron Maiden are almost the archetypal metal band. Have influenced many metal subgenres.
25AC/DC
High Voltage

Bluesy hard rock and not metal but Angus's riffs were surely a staple for the early weeks of learning of countless metal guitarists.
26Angel Witch
Angel Witch

An influence on thrash and death metal
27Diamond Head
Lightning To The Nations

Cult band from the NWOBHM who had an influence on thrash metal.
28Def Leppard
On Through The Night

Much maligned English group who went on to influence a whole host of pop metal bands.
29Quiet Riot
Quiet Riot II

Formed in 1973, brought metal to the mainstream in America, influenced hair metal.
30Uriah Heep
Salisbury

Cheesy and overblown heavy rock band who have influenced many commercial metal bands.
