The Greatest Heavy Metal Bands

No thrash/black/death, just the real fucking deal. The album is my personal favorite but an artist's place on the list takes into account their whole discography.
10Trouble
Psalm 9

I don't care how Christians these dudes say they are, those riffs come straight from hell! Epic, melodic traditional doom with some occasional stoner bents, this worthy stuff indeed.
9Omen
Battle Cry

Omen's first four albums should a veritable place in the heavy metal pantheon that time has, sadly, not fully granted them. Epic guitar leads, high pitched vocals and a truly badass battle-ready feel, this stuff is not to be fucked with.
8Venom
At War With Satan

Raw, intense and evil, black metal fans often disparage Venom's lack of depth (read: pretense), failing to see the genius behind the wild abandon with which Cronos and co. delivered their early 80s output. The songs are often catchy as hell, and they pull off the Satan thing marvelously. At War With Satan may also be the coolest song ever.
7Candlemass
Nightfall

The ultimate doom band. No one riffs like these guys, and Messiah's wails will make hell itself appear before you. Also, their guitarist got really fucking good around "Ancient Dreams," so yeah, you can add bitching solos to the already splendid mix.
6Deep Purple
Burn

Yes, I just called Deep Purple a heavy metal band. And really, why the fuck not? Early Purple was fast, loud, excessive and self-indulgent. If Highway Star, Speed King, Burn and Child in Time aren't the epitome of metal, then I don't know what is. The band was a brilliant unit, and it had two absolutely stunning vocalists in its ranks during its classic era. Lately, thanks partly to the inclusion of lame-ass Steve Morse, the band has steadily decreased the intensity of their old tunes in performances, but don't be fooled, Purple was all fire, solos, screams, rage and lust. (RIP Jon Lord)
5Mercyful Fate
Melissa

The best composers in heavy metal by far, they crafted music that was progressive, challenging, epic, dynamic and powerful, and yet was so badass that you didn't even have to stop and think about those things. The second greatest guitar duo in metal (the first should be evident), intelligently crafted rocking tunes, and of course, the King, in all his mighty devi-worshipping splendor, every element here is a win.
4Manilla Road
The Deluge

Epic, melodic, powerful and just consistent as fuck while still making sure each of their albums is somehow unique. Such a good band, so underrated. They should be bigger than Maiden.
3Black Sabbath
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

I guess the explanation is required not so much as to why I'm including this here but why it's not number 1. I guess it's personal taste really. Sorry? To be fair even some of their best albums have some lame tunes. Still, fucking amazing band, the first six Ozzy albums and the two classic Dio albums are the foundation stones upon which most of this mighty temple is built. Hail.
2Motorhead
Bomber

I think the general image that Motorhead have simply been putting out the same album over and over again is because their attitude is overwhelming and all- encompassing that it seems to loom over every note they play. To many a poor unobservant sod this consistency appears to be repetition. Sure, these guys aren't about to go into prog territory or release an acoustic album, but that's precisely what it's all about. Every album has something about it, and even the few that aren't that great have an underlying stamp of genius. This band will save your fucking life, they pull you straight out from the gutter of fallacy.
1Judas Priest
Sad Wings Of Destiny

Priest's original run was simply the greatest in metal, period. I'm not gonna explain, just go listen to the early stuff and be blown the fuck away.
