| In a musical quagmire
Recently I've become acutely aware that I'm returning to the same old albums over and over again instead of looking for new music, which concerns me as sooner or later I'm going to become very bored. To find new music, I either used to use the genre tags on here or type a genre into Bandcamp and check that out - that was great a year back, when it was 95% likely to be some subgenre of metal. However, my tastes have expanded, and I don't know whether I want to search metal, minimalist, techno, jazz, hardcore, post punk... and then I get overwhelmed and just stick The Smith Street Band on again (which is awesome, but I could do with a change).
Basically, what do you guys recommend I listen to (I'm honestly open to anything) - and, if anyone's been in this situation before or similar, some guidance as to what to do about it would be greatly appreciated. List is pretty much all the things I've dug in 3 whole months, all but 2 not from 2015. | 1 | | Izah Sistere
Post-metal done right | 2 | | The Smith Street Band Throw Me in the River
The offending repeater. Absolutely adore the album, but when I'm listening to it at least once every day for 2 months I know sooner or later I'm gonna hate it, and that'll be a big shame. | 3 | | The Cure Disintegration
Another repeat offender, see above. | 4 | | Roanoke Vast Knowledge Of Things That Don't Matter
Probably the last album I'm proud to say I found on my lonesome. Screamo with really good vocals and guitars, shame it's so short. | 5 | | Lost Salt Blood Purges The Voids We All Long For
Atmospheric and glorious. | 6 | | Misthyrming Söngvar Elds Og óreiðu
Can't get enough of this some days. | 7 | | Jamiroquai A Funk Odyssey
Don't judge. | 8 | | Inside the Beehive Drink Bleach; Live Forever
Heavy-as-fuck chaotic grindcore that maintains structure while still being unpredictable. | 9 | | The Great Old Ones Tekeli-Li
Because, duh. Album rules. | 10 | | Damien Rice O
In danger of becoming a repeat offender. | 11 | | Barrow Though I'm Alone
Really love the emotion in this album, the clean vocals are incredible. | 12 | | (eight) Emme Nae Elamaa
Finnish emo with a slight post-rock feel in parts. The album before, Näyt Kauas, is slightly heavier and just as good. | |

04.03.15 | MAJORLY pales in comparison to the quarter-year lists recently, and I must admit to being a bit jealous. | oresttt

Hotline Miami Soundtrack :]
Oh wow, Roanoke have a new record out? Gotta check that. | Archelirion

http://roanokeil.bandcamp.com/album/vast-knowledge-of-things-that-dont-matter Yeah, it's brilliant but too short - think it's about 13 minutes in 4 tracks :'( | CalculatingInfinity
04.03.15 | I'm in that situation too, quite frustrating. Here's some random recs if you're intrested:
Gackt - Mars and Mizerable
Blotted Science - Both albums but I think The Animation of Entomology is better.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History and if you like that In Glorous Times
Kazumoto Endo - While You Were Out | Keyblade
04.03.15 | use rym dude, using the charts here is almost pointless | Archelirion
04.03.15 | I'm familiar with Blotted Science, and have heard OF Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, but I'll give that and the other two a shot as well, thanks!
I need to figure out how to effectively use rym, I have an account but aren't on it a lot. | NakedSnake

Million Dead- A Song To Ruin (hardcore) | Friday13th
04.03.15 | I usually shuffle between my same old music I love and still checking new music consistently. I think that helps you keep a balanced view and not be too easily impressed or too easily turned off. You mentioned post-punk so check Talking Heads and Television if you haven't already. | Archelirion
04.03.15 | Yeah, I actually should have put the Captain, We're Sinking on here as that dominated my listening for the first half of February. I've heard Million Dead are similar to Reuben, in which I should adore them. Thanks for the recs people =)
That's not a bad way of balancing things Friday13th, might be worth me giving that a bash. | Cygnatti
04.03.15 | Sweet trip - velocity : design : comfort | SCREAM!

04.03.15 | Believe it or not, Spotify is a great tool to find new music if you use the Discover option. Not sure if you use Spotify or not, but I've been using it to find a lot of new music. | Archelirion
04.03.15 | That's a pretty neat looking list, thanks! I use Spotify, but I don't think I've ever used the Discover function on it; might give it a bash. | ComeToDaddy
04.03.15 | All the recs in here are killer so far. Side note: glad to see you enjoyed FoE so much and Owsla getting a 5 from you as well. Will try to personalize recs to what I already know you like.
The Cure - Join The Dots is great if you love 3, and so many fans of the band haven't jammed it. 4 discs long and has music from every era of theirs so you'll definitely find something you like.
Wil Wagner - Laika. You've probably heard it, but if not, it's the Smith Street Band's lead singer doing a half hour acoustic ep and it's great.
Amenra - Mass 3, 4 and 5.
Light Bearer - Lapsus. If you still haven't checked it, same vocalist as FoE and similar musically too.
Time To Burn - Is.Land
Rorcal - Heliogabalus, Vilagvege
Gospel - The Moon Is A Dead World (one of my 5's, highly recommend)
Dead Letter Circus - This Is The Warning. You might hate this, who knows, but you 5'd Sound Awake and DLC are similar, just much more accessible. Check the song Cage.
Esoteric - Paragon of Dissonance. Then all their other albums. The Pernicious Enigma is another 5 of mine but their latest is the best starting point for sure. | Archelirion
04.03.15 | Cheers for the recs! I haven't listened to Join the Dots, so I'll get on that when I get round to it! I believe you rec'd me Laika a while back and I never got round to it, so that's on the list as well. I've actually listened to Amenra, Light Bearer, Time To Burn and Rorcal, but all of them could do with a few relistens (especially Amenra, who I love every time I listen to them). I know how much you love Esoteric so I'll listen to them for you :P | TwigTW
04.03.15 | If you're wearing out Damien Rice, try these:
King Creosote - From Scotland With Love
Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Last Smoke Before The Storm
The Eels - Electro-Shock Blues
. . . and Al Green's Greatest Hits [2]
| Archelirion
04.03.15 | I'm vaguely familiar with King Creosote, but I'll give a listen. Thanks! | Cyberduck
04.03.15 | I mostly look for similar artists by checking their remixes, influences, tastes or whatever relation there is within the genre. It will give you less results, but makes sure it has a similar sort of "aesthetic". There's way too much I could recommend you, so I'll just post a little selection.
Cranes - Forever (Dreampop)
Curve - Pubic Fruit (Industrial, Shoegaze)
Bitstream Dream - Spiralglide (Chill Out)
Skinny Puppy - Back And Forth Vol. 2 (Industrial, Lo-Fi)
Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians (Psytrance, Downtempo)
Scorn - Deliverance (Industrial, Dub)
JC-001 - Ride The Break (Hip-Hop, Funk)
Rose Berlin - Anyway (Indie Pop)
Crying Vessel - Selfless (Darkwave, Electronic)
Meat Beat Manifesto - Satyricon (Electronic)
DJ Hidden - The Later After (Drum & Bass)

04.03.15 | check rush | Archelirion
04.04.15 | Thanks for the list Cyberduck, I'll be sure to crack into some of those at some point.
I actually haven't ever really listened to Rush, which I think I really should've done by now.
No problem dude. |
