04.26.12 | List is generic, but mostly good
6 can GTFO |

04.26.12 | 6 rules. Dont speak again. |

04.26.12 | lol |

04.26.12 | Pfft, 6 is ok, but it's doesn't deserve to be "all time" anything. Back down. |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | "Anybody who doesnt think the Black Album is a great album is high"
- Gary Holt, Chuck Billy, etc.
They wish they made it. Megadeth too. Which is why they all tried to replicate it themselves. |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.26.12 | Dude, chill, there's nothing much wrong with the Black Album, but there are so many superior albums
that it has no place on this list |
climactic
04.26.12 | lol wtf 7 and 10 |
TheFonz123
04.26.12 | lol but queen is the actually the greatest thing ever |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | Superior is all subjective my butterfly. People act like its so simple to do what Metallica did on that album. If it was then where are all the other Black Albums? Why did every other band who tried to do their own version fail miserably? |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.26.12 | Countdown to Extinction didn't fail miserably |
Cipieron
04.26.12 | 2,5,6,7,8,10 all rock.. but you will probably get reamed for this list knowing sputnik |
nex77
04.26.12 | 7 is a winner. 10 is the only shocker. |
Trebor.
04.26.12 | Where is Dead Kennedys |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | Countdown was good but Megadeth was only trying to play towards the same crowd who ate up the Black Album.
Metallica set the tone and Megadeth just rode the wave to a moderate success. Mustaine was obsessed with topping them. |
climactic
04.26.12 | not saying they are bad, but so random on a list of dad rock and rolling stone top 50 albums |
jdennis31
04.26.12 | yea. someone posted this big ass thing about the pure number albums out now vs albums in past decades and how retarded it is that all greatest albums lists have like nothing but old shit. i want to find that post... |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.26.12 | Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll/Are You Dead Yet?
Same principle as the Black Album; a change of sound towards a more commercial, generic direction |
Trebor.
04.26.12 | Where is Rush |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | Well I think that only makes sense since older bands pretty much set the standard. The ones who started their respective genres should get more credit than ones who followed to me, unless the music is just shitty. |
Trebor.
04.26.12 | where is Modest Mouse |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.26.12 | It's true that the older bands set the standard and influenced/inspired loads of followers, but credit should be given to bands that continue to start genres more recently (GY!BE, Neurosis etc) |
ZilbelPing
04.26.12 | Replace the black album with Ride the Lightning. |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | I think theres a boatload of credit for those bands Johnny. Maybe not on Rolling Stone.com or whatever but on this site Id say they get their due. |
Trebor.
04.26.12 | GY!BE didn't start any genre
|
ZilbelPing
04.26.12 | Wait, wtf 7 and 10? |
Trebor.
04.26.12 | 10 is my favorite album from the 70's |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.26.12 | Lol, if it wasn't for this site I'd never stop raging against the Rolling Stone |
jdennis31
04.26.12 | i think they definitely deserve credit for ushering in new genres/influences, but i don't think that should automatically crown them as superior albums/bands. but i mean the albums i've heard on this list are great, just find it odd when a greatest albums list has nothing i recognize from 2000+. don't see how it's possible that there isn't one 'greatest of all time album' out of the million albums released this decade. *i mean in general, i know a couple on this list are not too old |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.26.12 | Also, while 7 isn't the most obvious choice, it's a fair pick |
TooLateToGoBack
04.26.12 | so generic |
Mike08
04.26.12 | I like all these albums actually but none of them would make it past a rating of 4. Not going to lie though this list is generic. How about Camel? (Moonmadness! Mirage! )
And anyone who strives to make the Black album is like trying to win a Grammy. It would be wise to avoid maximizing mass appeal with your sound. When you appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one. I appreciate "broadening your music," but thats different than sucking dick for money. |
Mike08
04.26.12 | How do you enter in spaces to create paragraphs? My last comment was 2 paragraphs..... Not one mesh |

04.26.12 | fuck all the 10 haters |

04.26.12 | thumbs up if u were born in the wrong generation nd HATE MODERN MUSIC like (c)rap :) |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | Mike I disagree witcha. Just because an album appeals to alot of people doesnt make it bad. Some of the albums on this list were insanely popular, and still are, because they're great. The Black album isnt as good as the 80s stuff, but it was the perfect formula for a respectable popular metal album and theres a reason it went 16x platinum.
After In Justice Metallica had nowhere else to go. They already did the thrash thing and then went as progressive as they could. Thrash was out of ideas and played out by 1991 and the whole Grunge/Alternative/Nu Metal thing was fresh at the time. What was Metallica going to do? Its not like other thrash bands continued making classics in the 90s. Their time was up and they knew it which is why many either turned Nu Metal or disbanded altogether.
Like I said its not easy at all to make a Black Album. Load/ReLoad/St Anger is a different thing all together. |
YankeeDudel
04.26.12 | Not to mention The Black Album served as alot of peoples first taste of metal. It still is one of the greatest gateway albums of all time, yet can still be jammed to by the biggest metalhead veteran unless they got a stick up their ass. Without The Black Album many people wouldnt have even gotten into metal at all. So not only did Metallica help themselves with that album, they helped metal in general. Once somebody gets into Metallica then they might get into Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Pantera, Sepultura, so on and so forth and it spirals from there. At least thats what happened to me. Now Im on Sputnik with some of the biggest elitist hipstas ever. Yay. |
Days of Future Passed
04.27.12 | Meh to put 10 on a list like this is a stretch, but yeah I can agree with 1-5 |
RedRawPoetic
04.27.12 | 10 is on their because I think that what Fair To Midland is doing right now is genre defining, a group that finally has mixed some interesting influences together. I can say with certainty that nobody sounds like Fair To Midland out of this generation. Karnivool might be the closest in style and even they have their own sound. |
RedRawPoetic
04.27.12 | As for Porcupine Tree, I mean cmon, a couple seconds into "Blank Planet" and you'll understand. One of the best of our era. |
GnFnRs87
04.28.12 | 1 might well be the best album of all time
2 is a rock n roll classic
3 is amazing but not as good as 1
4 is the Beatles second best behind 'Abbey Road'
5 'Are you Experienced' is better but I like this one
6 why is it on here ? I like it but 'Master', 'Lightning', 'Kill 'Em All' and 'Justice' are all better
8 one of my favourite rock albums !! Should be higher !!
9 good but 'Exile' is better
Also, where is Rush ? (6454648) |
