| Artists That Grew On Me Like Fungus
Basically bands/performers I despised at first that i now value as some of
the most amazing artists in my collection. List is my first album from each
of them that I listened to. | | 1 | | Elliott Smith Either/Or
The lo-fi guitar strums and oddly high vocals of Speed Trials just didn't do it for me
at first. I remember on my first listen the only song I truly enjoyed was Between The
Bars and perhaps Alameda, because both utilize great, somber guitar lines. After
getting into this and other material more, I pretty much consider him my favorite
artist. RIP. Favorite album: Figure 8 | | 2 | | Modest Mouse The Lonesome Crowded West
"Oh hey this is a cool riff" FROM THE TOP OF THE OCEAN, YEAHHH. This took me a
lonnnnnggg time to warm up to. The main reason I kept coming back was the lyrics
and drumming, but once I realized how incredible the lo-fi mix and guitar tones are
on this, I eventually warmed up to every aspect of the album-even Isaac's vocals. I
honestly can't imagine the band sounding any other way. Favorite Album: This Is A
Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About | | 3 | | Electric Wizard Dopethrone
The opening riff of Vinum Sabbathi hit me in the face with an anvil, and I hated it
more than eating topsoil. I persevered, but by the time I got to the droning riffs at
the end of Weird Tales, man I was freaking done with these guys. On a whim, I
jammed this again last month and I love these guys. They're truly about
atmosphere, which I admire. Favorite Album: Dopethrone | | 4 | | Bathory Bathory
One of the most respected and influential extreme metal artists of all time had a
difficult time winning me over. It was my first foray into black metal, so it frustrated
me how his great instrumentals were so unclear at first. Also, his clean vocals on the
viking metal albums really bugged me at first. I now consider him a very valuable
composer in my vast collection. RIP. Favorite Album: Under The Sign Of The Black
Mark | | 5 | | Manic Street Preachers The Holy Bible
Upon my first 2-3 listens, I found this album to be good, wild post-punk musically but
nowhere near deserving of a 4.4 average. It just didn't seem that special, but it
didn't seem like I would be jamming it very much after a week or two. After many
convos in the album thread with demi and Chortles urging me to check out the lyrics,
I did and saw the album in a whole new perspective. Understanding what James was
saying gave this album an entirely new aura. His vocals suddenly carried tons of
weight, and the music was bleeding pure emotion in a way I hadn't experienced in a
long time. Favorite album: The Holy Bible | |

02.14.13 | Modest Mouse took me a long fucking time but it was well worth it | Cygnatti
02.14.13 | I didn't like Taylor Swift at first.
But now though... | cb123
02.14.13 | Isis
Neurosis

Coheed & Cambria
| sixdegrees
02.14.13 | kayo dot

Wu-Tang
Smashing Pumpkins(so far)
a bunch others | gwynbleidd
02.14.13 | Oh Elliott Smith grew on me as well. | sleepyhead
02.14.13 | I feel the same way about Elliott Smith. seemed just 'ok' then turned into one of my fave artists of all time. others include Animal Collective (seemed too random, meaningless and/or repetitive and annoying at first) , At the Drive-In (failed initially to realise what made them so special and influential in the post-hardcore genre), Refused (for similar reasons), A Tribe Called Quest (songs were too monotonous and 'samey'), certain maudlin of the well and Kayo Dot material was tough to get into but ended up loving.
there's tons i can mention, but others include Neutral Milk Hotel, Scott Walker, Slint, Sonic Youth, Swans, Destroyer, dredg, Glassjaw, La Dispute, Mekong Delta, Rx Bandits, Stars of the Lid, Sun Kil Moon | YoYoMancuso
02.14.13 | ^ dredg was an immediate thing for me. Sanzen made my jaw drop.
gwyn, keep trying with the Pumpkins. Hopefully you're getting into their first two albums first.
Treb: if you look in the bowels of my shoutbox there's a convo between you and me discussing LCW on my first listen. I think there's a point where you keep trying to tell me how good the vocals are for like 3 or 4 straight messages | foxblood
02.14.13 | stuff rarely grows on me since i dig most stuff i try on some level. can't think of an album that's
risen from a 2 to 4.5 or somethin | sleepyhead
02.14.13 | also Magma. omg Magma, how could I forget | YoYoMancuso
02.14.13 | fox: that doesn't really happen to me either, I pretty much liked all these artists to some degree at first (except Modest Mouse) however they grew on me because I didn't understand their hype upon my first exposure. | sleepyhead
02.14.13 | yeah i dunno. dredg just seemed too plain and 'mainstream sounding' if you get what i mean. never expected i'd end up liking El Cielo so much
| YoYoMancuso
02.14.13 | yeah it definitely got better with more listens. That album has such an incredible amount of depth. If you read my top 50 albums list, El Cielo actually managed to snag the #2 spot. | sleepyhead
02.14.13 | wow, nice list. really nice actually. but dredg above floyd, king crimson, radiohead, etc? that's pretty ballsy dude | gwynbleidd
02.14.13 |
gwyn, keep trying with the Pumpkins. Hopefully you're getting into their first two albums first.
I tried Mellon Collie first since I had already heard 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings'(Dead Space 2 lol), and didn't really do it for me, mainly because it was loaded with too much filler, but I heard Siamese Dream recently and it was awesome.
I've only heard it once though, so needs more time, plus I'm still not very familiar with a lot of the songs' sound, though Silverfuck was awesome.
I'll give Mellon Collie another chance later on | YoYoMancuso
02.14.13 | yeah you're really meant to delve into the Pumpkins from the beginning onward, because Gish is as simple as they get and their material slowly becomes more experimental and complex.
sleepyhead: ballsy schmallsy. I didn't make that list to please people, it's an honest ranking of what my favorite albums are. Thanks though, glad you like it | sleepyhead
02.14.13 | i respect that | YoYoMancuso
02.14.13 | thanks. I've never been as obsessed with an album as I was when I first heard that. | sleepyhead
02.14.13 | i can imagine. kinda like how i was with 'In the Court of the Crimson King' or 'The Galilean Satellites' | YoYoMancuso
02.14.13 | I still gotta get into Rosetta | Insurrection
02.14.13 | NIN - The Fragile for me | Atari
02.14.13 | ha nice profile pic. i heard holy bible for the first time the other day it was good but i have to hear it more before i rate it | savagecabbage
02.14.13 | Flogging Molly. I always rode them off as a gimick/band that uses cheap hooks. Really love that band now so yeah not obscure but fuck it, that's what it is. | Chortles
02.14.13 | 5 :] i really liked it first listen but it grew an immeasurable amount.
i don't feel like bands super growing on you happens often, usually i immediately like/dislike a band
and stick with that from the get-go, just with varying levels of liking.
my favorite album started at prob something like a 3 and grew to a 5 over a long period of time though
so I BELIEVE | FromDaHood
02.14.13 | Took me a while to get into Atmosphere I guess. Most of the time if I don't like a band initially I shelve them | Cygnatti
02.15.13 | Same deal with chorts. I was initially very disappointed in what would become my fav album ever. | StallionMang
03.29.13 | Unlike most people, Lonesome Crowded West is my least favorite Modest Mouse album, but that's probably cause I haven't listened to it in a while. |
