January 2014 Digs

Handful of albums I'm liking from 2014 so far, year is looking pretty good already.
1Corpsessed
Abysmal Thresholds

So good it should be illegal, opaque, crushing death metal.
2Alcest
Shelter

Not the most interesting album musically but it's super pleasant and that's all I really expected so yay.
3Woods of Desolation
As The Stars

Dunno why everyone is bitching about the production, but oh well. Has a similar effect on me as Shelter even if it's a lot gruffer aesthetically.
4Domains
Sinister Ceremonies

Old school death metal with awesome production and a really odd but cool guitar tone. Criminally overlooked, everyone should listen immediately.
5Have a Nice Life
The Unnatural World

Don't quite understand the level of praise this thing is getting but it's pretty cool.
6Cynic
Kindly Bent to Free Us

Even at their most pedestrian, Cynic still produce an album that impresses in more ways than one. Apart from some mediocre singles and annoying vocoder effects this is pretty awesome.
7Thee Silver Mount Zion
Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything

Vocals took some getting used to but I enjoy the mish-mash of styles here.
8Alor
Haerfest

Some some sweet Agalloch worship.
9The Kennedy Veil
Trinity of Falsehood

Solid modern brutal/tech death, won't please purists though.
10Behemoth
The Satanist

Probably the best full length Behemoth have ever made, varied, nuanced, surprisingly dynamic and chock full of Satan m/m/m/m/
11Audrey Fall
Mitau

Instrumental post-metal that doesn't meander and drag like most of the genre. Surprising number of engaging riffs and sweet atmosphere.
12Of Solitude and Solemn
Starlight's Guide

Noctus metal, really well produced, spacey stuff.
13Sunn O))) and Ulver
Terrestrials

Gotten a pretty mixed reception but I find this to be pretty interesting, almost relaxing.
14Valtari
Hunter's Pride

Pretty by-the-numbers but nonetheless very pretty melodeath from Australia.
15Actress
Ghettoville

Gonna take a while to flesh out but I'm digging this pretty hard, interesting mix of styles, liking the darker, industrial sounding tracks the most.
