09.03.14 | Great taste! You have most of the essentials and I can't say I'm much more experienced than you. However, if you haven't heard them, you might dig some of these(a lot of these definitely aren't zeuhl and most of them don't neatly fit into what we tend to call RIO but are still Avant-Rock that would probably appeal to you):
-Samla Mammas Manna (Classic RIO)
-Cheer-Accident: Their work is all over the place but a lot of it would probably appeal to you, and most of it is at least RIO-influenced.
-Guapo
-Time of Orchids(especially Namesake Caution and Sarcast While)
-MiRthkon
-Kayo Dot. You've probably heard their name mentioned alongside metal bands but they are firmly avant-garde. Blue Lambency Downward and Coyote would probably appeal to you for the same reasons that they have been rejected by the band's metal fanbase:they're pure avant-rock without any metal. If you can appreciate heavier stuff, all of their other work is great, with Choirs of the Eye being pretty much the best album ever
-Zappa/The Mothers. Specifically Uncle Meat, Absolutely Free, Weasles Ripped My Flesh, and Burnt Weeny Sandwich. He's a genius, but most of his output isn;t the kind of stuff you appear to be looking for. These, however, are.
-Zu
-Most Mike Patton Projects. Again, on the heavy side
-Captain Beefheart. Essential!
-a.P.a.t.T
-Secret Chiefs 3
-John Zorn, especially his Naked City albums, which feature Fred Frith
-Extra Life
Hope these work for you, if you haven't already heard them!

PA is an invaluable resource for this kind of stuff, especially older groups, if you can get past some of the stuffier, ignorant parts/users of the site. I suspect you're already familiar with this site though | Sevengill
09.03.14 | woah, somebody else here knows Magma? I'll have to give these a look. MDK and Kohntarkosz are masterful. | emester

09.03.14 | good list
I don't listen to this shit anymore but it makes me happy to see it on Sputnik | Onirium
09.03.14 | Awesome list, man, props for Maneige and Magma especially. I know a few of these, I'll give the others a spin someday. Also, you'd probably like Art Zoyd, they have more electronic elements than most other RIO bands imo, but I think you'd dig it. Also, "Third" by Soft Machine might also be something you'd like
If you like very experimental rock, even though it's a little different from RIO and Zeuhl bands, I think you might dig the German krautrock scene, which could be considered a sub-genre of prog with emphasis on electronic music influences and more atmospheric ambiences.
Amon Duul II - Yeti
Can - Tago Mago

09.03.14 | Yeti is essential listening | organizedsound
09.03.14 | Faust definitely blur the lines between Kraut and avant/rio | organizedsound
09.03.14 | I'll also second Soft Machine/early Robert Wyatt as a band that, while definitely not RIO, would be interesting to someone into this kind of stuff. I adore the first 4 Soft Machine albums, first 2 being some overly-British Psych and the latter 2 being an ethereal mix of free jazz and late 60s psychedelia
Similarly, Gong might interest the OP. But we're getting way off topic haha, neither of these bands are really that avant-garde | Onirium
09.03.14 | Yeah Gong and some other Canterbury Scene bands could be interesting recs here too, but they're much closer to the "classic" prog rock scene. But the Canterbury scene is a very vague term, as Soft Machine are often considered part of it, yet they are much more avant-garde than most of the others. I'm not really an expert on the scene, but there might be more interesting avant-garde bands in it I don't know about | EasyModeDX
09.03.14 | I went to sleep and when I came back so many people ;-; thanks everyone for replying!
organizedsound I'm already familiar with projects under the tzadik monkier and the Naked City album. I
also tend to lurk in PA. I know Kayo Dot, love their material, especially Choirs, is one of my favorites,
even though it doesn't stray from the beaten path that much when compared to any other effort they did,
but it was nicely executed. I liked blue lambency downward too. I'm pretty much familiar with everything
you posted under the avant monkier except for Time of Orchids which I should've checked by now, mirthkon,
also familliar with both Zappa and his Mothers project, I'll make sure to check those you mentioned that
have slipped my radar. I also must keep my eyes open for the Canterbury scene too.
I've also been curious about the Krautrock genre but haven't gotten into anything under this label so this
seems to be the time to give it a go :). Well long story short I'll listen to everything you guys
mentioned so many thanks to everyone! | EasyModeDX
09.03.14 | Also glad to see people here who are into this :) I'm going to my uncle's house to browse into his jawdropping collection of avant prog vinyls and he's been into RIO and Zeuhl for a really long time, I'm probably also going to watch some live magma action while there, when I come back maybe I'll add some bands into sputnik's database :) |
