|Metal and Other Music Recommendations|
A friend of mine is looking to get into metal, list is recommendations based on what I know of his taste.
Vulgar Display of Power
An extremely influential band and album, that led the 'groove metal' trend. There are definite death metal influences throughout and this album was very influential on the metalcore trends that followed it years later. This album is all about being a 'bad ass', fantastic riffs, just tough bro music that is great for working out.
genre: groove metal

New Junk Aesthetic
I think you will really like this band! Excellent lyrics, southern and punk all throughout their music. Band is a lot of fun with strong punk influences.
genre: metalcore, southern metal

An amazing album! If you dig power metal you will love this. Album is melodic death metal + power metal, great sense of melody and pacing throughout. It is a concept album about a man freezing to death. Also a great album to listen to in the cold due to the nice atmospheric sound of the synths and tone of the album.
Highlighted song: Winter Madness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ziAsMTs9sg
|4||Children of Bodom|
Follow the Reaper
One of the most popular extreme metal bands out there.
genre: power metal, melodic death metal
Highlighted song: Follow The Reaper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_3Zkp0JQds
A fantastic and very unique album. The entire album has a very dark and drugged out hazy feel to it. Beautiful vocals work really well in juxtaposition with heavy as balls crunchy riffs.
genre: alt metal
Highlighted song: RX Queen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhLjn-pVT_U
One of my favourite albums of all time. Album is very influential and a feat of extreme technical skill, some of the best drumming you will ever hear put on record. Complex and extremely long songs. This album is more focused on spirituality where their album Aenima is darker and angrier if you prefer that instead. Lateralus is one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion.
genre: progressive metal
highlighted song: Lateralus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tcW-j7KFgY
Band has a huge and heavy sound while still being very rock oriented. Great music for working out.
genre: sludge metal
highlighted song: Blood and Thunder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-Su1YXQYek
Through Silver in Blood
This album is less entry level and may take some to get into but it is very good with long songs. Very intense and passionate music with moments of beauty spread throughout deep, contemplative heaviness.
Genres: post-metal, progressive sludge metal
Highlighted song: through silver in blood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp7Dz4bh5UE
One of the most important metal bands ever. Death, the death in death metal. This album is considered widely as one of the greatest metal albums ever and isn't very brutal, has more a heavy metal vibe than the modern death metal you see today.
genre: old school technical death metal, heavy metal
highlighted song: Crystal Mountain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zguCFjHyVeM
|10||System of a Down|
One of the best and biggest metal bands of the 2000's. Very esoteric and politically/ social commentary charged lyrics. Heavy and very quirky music that takes influence from nu-metal music.
genre: alt metal, nu-metal
Highlighted song: Prison Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yndfqN1VKhY
Ace of Spades
One of the first metal bands ever created. Took big influences from 70's punk music.
genre: heavy metal
highlighted song: The Ace Of Spades https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcf7DnHi54g
If you dig Whitechapel you may dig this, one of the most iconic deathcore albums. Known for its intense vocals.
highlighted song: Unanswered https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Yr5rn3Sv_4
One of the best vocal performances in nu-metal. Entry level and very angry, this album served as many people's gateway into more extreme music. Really fun and intense music with some great drumming.
Genre: Nu-metal, alt metal
Highlighted song: Heretic Anthem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko7eTB4xNDo
Gorguts are Canadian and one of the most important death metal bands to ever exist they are known for their standout bass playing, amazing vocals, odd time signatures and technical playing. On this album they take a much more entry level approach to their music, one of the most accessible and easy to get into death metal albums of high quality that have come out in recent years.
genre: technical death metal
highlighted song: Le Toit Du Monde https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LQd0IoJ25M
I'm not sure if you would like this album but I'll recommend it anyway, it is one of my favourite albums of all time. Opeth are one of the most if not the most respected bands in modern metal. This album flawlessly and seemlessly transitions between beautiful acoustic crooning and vicious death metal. Album also has 70's progressive rock influences and is a very emotional album with long songs. A masterpiece.
genre: progressive metal
Highlighted song: The Moor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgdH_52BGlU
This album is a strong contender for my favourite album of all time. Also have to recommend this as well even though you may not necessarily like it, still give it a shot. It is VERY intense. Every member of the band performs amazingly, perfect riffs, drumming, vocals the whole bit. The vocal delivery is weird and takes getting used to, but it is masterful in the pain and sorrow delivered in his voice.
This album is a concept album that goes through the stages of a failing relationship, the lyrics aren't meant to be understood, the sound alone tells a beautiful, touching and sad story.

Everything Goes Numb
I think you will like this band a lot! Widely considered the greatest ska band. Band combines jazzy reggae with punky rock music.
highlighted song: We Will Fall Together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpl7XU9sLfs
I think you will like this album a lot! Since you like Japandroids, this band also has an emotional indie rock approach to punk rock. Would also recommend Fang Island and Gaslight Anthem as similar bands.
highlighted song: a more perfect union https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08fqHr_KGPY
Considered to be one of the greatest and first ska albums and a punk masterpiece.
40 Oz. to Freedom
Ska that shows its reggae influences also sounds very 90's rock. Album is very popular among stoners.
This album was way ahead of its time when it was released in 1982. Amazing hardcore punk album with great riffs and has reggae moments spread throughout the album. Their album Rock For Light and the Youth Are Getting Restless has more reggae
A modern hardcore/ screamo revival masterpiece in my controversial opinion. It is very important to pay attention to this band's lyrics as it is a concept album that tells a story. I consider this and their album Travels to be masterpieces of storytelling through punk music.

Turn the Radio Off
Another popular ska band.
One of my favourite albums and the album that actually led me to discovering sputnikmusic. This album is filled with pop punk anthems that are still just as full of angst, punch and emotion as they were when I first heard them.
Highlighted song: Ok I believe you , but my tommy gun don't https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oorx2EQ0Ag
A very early hip-hop album with big punk influences.
