01.06.12 My Top Albums Of 2011

My Top Albums Of 2011

This year was a very strange year in music for me. Whether it was too rmuch time spent rwriting and recording my own music, or just my rshifting musical tastes, I had a hard time rfinding new albums to get rinto, and, more often than not, I found myself returning to albums rrfrom prior years to satisfy me. In addition, many great albums were rreleased late last year, rmaking them ineligible, even if they carried rover into my rotation this year, such as With Life rIn Mind's rGrievances, or Skrillex's Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. All that rbeing said, rthere were still some awesome albums released in 2011. I rjust would've preferred it if the rdecisions were harder. Either way, rhere are what I consider to be the best written and most renjoyable ralbums and songs from 2011.
1Childish Gambino
Camp

When I listen to Hip-Hop, I'm usually enjoying the beat and the flow while
laughing AT the artist. With "Camp," I was enjoying the beat and the flow while
laughing WITH Childish Gambino. It's the most honest rap album I've ever
heard.
2 The Wonder Years
Suburbia: I've Given You All and Now I'm Nothing

While not nearly as catchy as "Under Soil and Dirt," I felt this album worked
better as a whole, so I gave it the higher listing. There was more variety and
structure, and the lyrical content was better. However, both albums have been
in steady rotation ever since their release.
3The Story So Far
Under Soil and Dirt

Without a doubt, the catchiest album I've ever heard. Ever. Tracks 1-11. These
songs will never get old.
43LAU
Dance Floor Filth

Just listen to it and you'll know. Every year has a "party album." This was that
album for me when I was looking to have a good time.
5Thrice
Major/Minor

While nothing will ever top the ingenuity of "The Alchemy Index" for me, this
album comes damned close. It's just great to see a band mature with style and
class. Nothing is ever forced with Thrice.
6Childish Gambino
EP

Yes, he gets two spots on this list. I just couldn't leave this little EP off the list.
Too many listens.
7Between the Buried and Me
The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues

Not as catchy or easy to get into as previous releases from BTBAM, but it's still a
BTBAM album, so I enjoyed it more than most albums released this year.
8James Blake
James Blake

Hated this album at first. I'm still convinced that we would call this horrible
songwriting if it were from anyone other than James Blake. But there's
something about this album...
9Jay-Z and Kanye West
Watch the Throne

Not their best lyrical outing, but the production on this CD couldn't be ignored.
10The Lonely Island
Turtleneck and Chain

Not a joke. Not sure if this says something great about The Lonely Island or
something horrible about the music industry today. When a comedy group
outranks most artists who take themselves seriously, there is some
reevaluating to be done. Great production. Hilarious lyrics. Catchy as Hell. Could
not leave it off the list.
