Evreaia
08.09.12 | Not sure how to explain (it's a really chaotic sound with convoluted time signatures), but best example would be to listen to bands like Converge, Coalesce, Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, Ion Dissonance, Norma Jean, the Chariot, etc..)
this song is filled with dissonance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFk3pRWN-rA |
Evreaia
08.09.12 | according to a dictionary =
1) inharmonious or harsh sound; discord; cacophony.
2) in music
a) a simultaneous combination of tones conventionally accepted as being in a state of unrest and
needing
completion.
b )an unresolved, discordant chord or interval. Compare consonance ( def. 3 ) . |
Hyperion1001
08.09.12 | basically dissonance is a quality of sound that is considered unstable, its often described as harsh and grating. consonant sound is sound that is considered stable. a dissonant structure is often considered "active" because dissonance is an unstable sound that is has a "need" to be resolved into stability, or consonance
there can also be both dissonant and consonant melody and harmony. just because a dissonant sound is harsh or grating doesnt mean it isnt harmonized or melodized |

08.09.12 | I think in most cases around these parts (I think) people are referring to dissonant tones when using the word dissonant. yeah like what Hype and Evreaia said, a dissonant tone sounds harsh, unstable or grating, and is basically not harmonious. It will sound like the chord or tone will need some kind of correction to sound complete, ok or harmonious.
that's how I understand it anyways, at least in the context of how people seem to mainly use it around here. |

08.09.12 | listen to botch. |

08.09.12 | ^ Yes Flutter!, or Ion Dissonance, Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan, Btbam. They all utilize Harmonic Minor at times, which uses every note so it's basically melody and dissonance up against one another on varying levels. |
Mordecai.
08.09.12 | grab a guitar or keyboard and play the notes E and F together. Dissonance! |

08.09.12 | Any mathcore has ton of dissonance. You can make dissonance easily on guitar, all you have to do is play a semitone chord. Idk if you play guitar but if you do them there you go |
Hyperion1001
08.09.12 | you can create dissonance easily on petty much any instrument that allows 2 or more tones to be played at the same time |
ChuckyTruant
08.09.12 | Yep. But in his context I think guitar is the most suitable example. Also you can create dissonance on guitar by playing very high-pitched octaves such as frets 14 and 16 on the D and B strings |

08.10.12 | The embrace of musical dissonance is a great method of achieving an expanded mind into the realms of enlightenment (supreme levels of awareness and understanding). If the Buddha were alive today, he surely would assimilate that doctrine into his teachings. |
