01.17.14 My Favourite Progressive Rock Albums

My Favourite Progressive Rock Albums

I think there's kind of a good variety but if anybody can recommend any rother albums in the rrprog genre that would be real swell.
16Van der Graaf Generator
Pawn Hearts

Prog at its most bombastic. The sax work is really good and free jazz influenced,
whilst Peter Hammill's voice denies category, often being the best thing about the
song.
15Mike Oldfield
Tubular Bells

Very peaceful to listen to, but not without moments of absurdity and overall
featuring some great keyboard work.
14Gong
Camembert Electrique

Arguably more psychedelic than progressive but to me personally it seems more the
latter. The vocals are groovy and the guitars are like something I've never heard
before, a masterpiece of the underground scene.
13King Crimson
Red

Pretty heavy for King Crimson and being home to some of Fripp's most immediately
satisfying guitar playing. John Wetton's vocals are really good as well and
sometimes I get a genuine sense of awe listening to it.
12The Moody Blues
Days of Future Passed

Perhaps the first progressive album, and while the strings can be a bit much and
sometimes it's a little dated, overall it's very consistent and a real hoot and a half
to listen to. "Nights in White Satin" is perfection.
11King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

Would probably be much higher if it wasn't for "Moonchild". Still, one of the first
prog albums and features "21st Century Man", need I say more?
10Pink Floyd
The Dark Side of the Moon

What can be said? Regarded by almost everyone as Pink Floyd at their most
entertaining, melodic and lyrically astute. What got me started on Pink Floyd and an
album that everyone should own.
9Yes
Fragile

Yes at their most tense, which is still pretty light. Features Rick Wakeman for the
first time and instantly elevating Yes to one of Prog's supreme. Amazing lengthy
songs and enjoyable shorter songs.
8Gentle Giant
Octopus

Really complex, but still really enjoyable, pushing progressive rock to the edge of
avant-garde without crossing the line and still being really pleasing and fun to listen
to.
7Jethro Tull
Thick as a Brick

Consistently funny, melodic and flowing with ideas. The perfect concept album
parody and a pretty damn fine concept album by itself.
6Jethro Tull
Aqualung

It features some really great riffs and the religious concept results in some of Ian's
most inspired lyricism. A good mixture of prog, hard rock and folk rock resulting in
something extremely pleasurable to listen to every time.
5 Cardiacs
A Little Man & a House & the Whole World Window

Really funny and eccentric, with a nice mix of punk and psychedelia, fully showing
that prog could thrive past its golden age and still be really creative and a joy to
listen to.
4Pink Floyd
The Wall

Although some dislike the concept, I personally love it, and although some argue
there's a lot of filler, well, there is...but it's good filler. There's just something about
Roger's voice that...does something to me. An album that touched me profoundly at
the age of 13.
3Yes
Close to the Edge

Featuring Jon at his most esoteric and the band at their most inventive, amazing
songwriting and cool atmosphere.
2Genesis
Selling England by the Pound

Not as entirely consistent as the lamb but still containing very strong moods and
instrumentation, and Peter's lyrics are at their most satirical. Oh, and Steve really
gets to show off.
1Genesis
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Perfection. So many moods and sounds and textures, great songwriting and
lyricism, what else can be said?
