| Potential Electoral-tie In Next Election...really?
Being the studious Poli Sci student that I am, I was reading an article in Congressional Quarterly about how many scholars are debating over how there COULD be an electoral tie in the Romney/Obama election next week.......more details below | | 1 | | Ancient Wisdom Cometh Doom, Cometh Death
a 269-269 Electoral vote could happen, which in that case Congress determines who wins; the House will vote on the Presidency and the Senate on the Vice Presidency. The first question is will the reps still vote for the popular candidate in their state, or with their personal beliefs, or will they vote strictly along party lines regardless? In these extremely partisan times, that's most likely. | | 2 | | Metallica Ride the Lightning
The House vote won't be an issue since there is 435, an odd number, so one candidate will win. In the Senate, there could be a 50-50 tie, which whenever this happens the Vice President is the tiebreaker. But Joe Biden IS the vp, so how could he be the tiebreaker in determining who wins between he and Paul Ryan? So who would be the tiebreaker then? Don't know. | | 3 | | Black Sabbath Master of Reality
The Supreme Court would HAVE to eventually take a case and answer this question, but the Court has what's known as the Political Question Doctrine which basically means they don't think it's the Court's place to determine questions like this. But they'd HAVE to rule on it. | | 4 | | Draconian Arcane Rain Fell
On top of all of this, Congress' current approval rating is like 7%, so you can imagine the mess this could cause. Their approval rating would go to like fucking 1%. Romney would win the Presidency because of Republican control of the House, but the Senate would be a toss up. Then there's the possibility of a Republican president and a Democratic VP....in these polarized times, yeah that'd work great. | | 5 | | Evergrey Recreation Day
Then there's the concern of the Supreme Court ruling on such issues that we'd have unelected officials, the justices, indirectly electing the new president. This could all turn into such a mess that it be disgusting. We'd have no clue who our president/vp is, how they got there, who got them there, etc. While it's in no way "likely" for this to happen next week, at some point down the line for our country an electoral-tie is going to happen just out of sheer probability...which then opens the door for these dilemmas in Congress. 10.31.12 | Hopefully that made sense, just typed it out right in a row. But yeah, brought this up in class today and my professor was like "godamn that's interesting; I never even thought of it". | NoMeansYes

10.31.12 | Not really about politics as much as it is about procedure and the Constitution. | americanohno
10.31.12 | A Mitt Romney/Joe Biden White House could be fun. It'd be like a sitcom!
Anyways I'm hoping Romney wins the popular vote and Obama takes the electoral college thataway both parties would be pissed about the e.c. and we can finally snuff the motherfucker. There's no fucking reason we should be allowing those yahoos in Ohio to decide the election every year. | KjSwantko
10.31.12 | Romney/Biden or Obama/Ryan would be both hilarious and disastrous. | TheSupernatural
10.31.12 | It's gonna be disastrous no matter who wins. The only difference between Romney and Obama are their respective religions and skin colors. Police state in two different flavors: White Mormon and Mixed Protestant.
It was so funny how I disagree with half the 3rd party candidates, but appreciate that they believe that the Constitution actually matters. Neither Obama or Romney give a shit about the Constitution (Obama's violated it many times and Romney has claimed he'd do the same). | hesperus
10.31.12 | As a gay man who has known more than zero women in my lifetime, I think I can pretty safely say that Romney and Obama have more differences than their religions and races. | Kris.
10.31.12 | lol supernatural ur so dum lolol | TheSupernatural
10.31.12 | @UhhKris "ur so dum" lol irony
@hesperus In what ways? Their foreign policy is identical, they both support NDAA, HR 347, the Patriot Act, drug wars, the Federal Reserve, deficit spending, etc. If you meant that Obama favors marriage equality and legal abortion, those are two minor social issues that shouldn't be up to the federal government in the first place. And I get that they're important, but when you realize the scope of how violent Obama has been overseas blowing the shit out of civilians in the name of "peace", while signing legislation to put people in prison permanently without due process whenever the government chooses to, those sorts social issues don't seem to mean much. | ILJ

Hey, fuck you. We aren't all yahoos. | Kris.

There is absolutely no bias in this whatsoever guys. | Cygnatti
10.31.12 | "It's gonna be disastrous no matter who wins."
ugh
"Their foreign policy is identical."
if you know anything about romney, his foreign policy only became identical with obama right at the 3rd debate, not anytime before that, smh | Kris.
10.31.12 | RUSSIA IS THE REAL ENEMY | Cygnatti
10.31.12 | too tr00 | eternium
10.31.12 | There's not going to be a tie. Obama only needs to win a couple of swing states to win. | TheSupernatural
10.31.12 | @Cygnatti Ahhh right well you know Romney, he's held every position on an issue twice. But that doesn't change the fact that their foreign policy is identical. Obviously it's not going to be exactly the same (heat of the moment vs. in hindsight), but Romney has decided that he'd do what Obama did, which is just following what Bush did.
@ILJAJLM It's all true. Yes, I do have opinions about the role of government, but everything I stated can be verified. I don't watch FOX News, CNN, MSNBC, etc. I look up issues and look at facts. I do my own research. | TheSupernatural
10.31.12 | And eternium's right. Obama doesn't have to do much to win. | Trebor17
10.31.12 | Remember when that shit happened to Gore? Fuck, there's an alternate universe where Gore won and we aren't fucked right now | Cygnatti
10.31.12 | obama caused the noreaster clearly so that he could look all presidential and shit and that mitt romney would stop his campaigning |
