04.12.13 | I like Artist more, but not by much
I tend to think of these as pretty similar albums, Illusion with more a punk sound and Artist leaning on metal a bit more. |
BigPleb
04.12.13 | Artist cos its the only Thrice I've heard. |

ZilbelPing
04.12.13 | Artist, definitely. Although, Illusions has Deadbolt but it still loses. |
BigPleb
04.12.13 | I don't like any other Thrice from what I've heard. |

04.12.13 | Artist is second only to Vheissu |
ChuckyTruant
04.12.13 | Wow lots of Artist. I also prefer the general sound of Artist, very similar in production but its a bit meatier, and the guitars are definitely a bit thicker. |
ashcrash9
04.12.13 | Artist was what got me into Thrice but I find myself in the mood to listen to Illusion far more. Maybe Artist just grew off me. Both are great. |
ChuckyTruant
04.12.13 | ^ agreed |
jredmond
04.12.13 | Illusion displays much more creative song writing imo. But i think that's the case of having years and years to write, re-write songs and then once you get critical acclaim for that album you have 2 years to write a follow up. Artist is much more structured, which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but the production value definitely increased as well. Both are incredible albums and took up alot of my ear time back in highschool. |

04.12.13 | They are about the same for me but I lean slightly more towards Artist. I wish the drums on Illusion didn't sound so fucking horrible though. |
Underflow
04.12.13 | Listened to Major/Minor today, which is my first Thrice album, and it was very good. I'll have to check these out, too. |
Trebor.

04.12.13 | Trebor is an idiot |
Dolving999
04.12.13 | Artist, simply because it's more mature. Also, it was their last "heavy" album. |
XingKing
04.12.13 | That's not true. Vheissu easily has some of the heaviest shit they have ever written |
Ecnalzen
04.12.13 | "So Strange I Remember You is so fucking underrated."
Agreed. One of my favorites by them. |

04.12.13 | Ok, gonna go all-out on this coz they're 2 of my alltime faves
Artist is a much chunkier, slicker album that refined the approach taken on Illusion. It hits a lot harder (I mean, Paper fucking Tigers, Silhouette and The Abolition of Man???) and sounds much more mature than Illusion and also has some incredibly catchy, upbeat moments (All That's Left, the t/t, Stare at the Sun) that balance the heavy whilst sounding similar enough to make it well-rounded and decently diverse
However, Illusion is a much rawer album and that is what wins it for me from the start; whilst I would never consider calling Artist dispasionnate, the emotional intensity of Illusion is more or less unrivalled by nearly anything I've heard (inb4 cries of "what about Jane Doe/Hospice" or similarally passionate albumss, I can't consider them as emotionally intense as Illusion because whereas other albums praised for being passionate tend to embody some feeling, I often feel that Illusion embodies what I feel/have felt (I suppose you could say it's nostalgic, but it feels like something more than that)). It's flawed in its own ways - Dustin's vocals aren't as perfect as they would become (although I find that their rough edge makes it more earnest) - but there is far more than enough to make up for it. I also LOVE the instrumental side more than other Thrice albums - THE RIFFS!!! - and have gotta love how good the lyrics are for a band this young (if in doubt, see So Strange I Remember You)
Rant over, Illusion wins, best band ever |

04.13.13 | well said johnny |

04.13.13 | That was beautiful, johhny. |

04.13.13 | Paper fucking Tigers indeed.
I do love Illusion (especially since it's how I got into the band, been listening to them since around the time it came out), but for me, Artist held up better over the years. Illusion is definitely their riffiest release, I will agree there. See You In The Shallows (the fun leads scattered throughout), So Strange I Remember You (the beginning and the ending) and To Awake And Avenge The Dead (the ending especially), just to name a few. It has some really great moments. |
ChuckyTruant
04.13.13 | I tend to like the riffs on Artist a bit more, but that's just me. |
dixoncocks
04.13.13 | Honestly think I like 1 better. Its a toss up though. |
ChuckyTruant
04.13.13 | It really is, I agree. |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.13.13 | At least there's no-one here saying Vheissu is best |
Ecnalzen
04.13.13 | Vheissu definitely doesn't riff as hard as these two, but it's still a pretty brilliant album. |
Project
04.13.13 | "At least there's no-one here saying Vheissu is best"
actually... |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.13.13 | NOOOOOOO
Don't get me wrong, I love Vheissu
Lots
But I just love these 2 more |
ChuckyTruant
04.13.13 | well vheissu is different, thats why I didn't include it here |
Ecnalzen
04.13.13 | For me, it's:
Artist
Vheissu
Illusion
I have Illusion in 3rd because Dustin's vocals can be a little off at times and there are a couple songs that don't do much for me. I pretty much love Artist and Vheissu straight through (except for maybe Image of the Invisible). |
ashcrash9
04.13.13 | Alchemy Index = Beggars > Illusion > Artist > Vheissu = M/M > Identity Crisis
|
Snake.
02.18.14 | Artist has Silhouette and The Abolition of Man so it automatically loses. |
SpiritCrusher2
02.18.14 | Illusion by far |
Motiv3
02.18.14 | Artist easily. |
Ecnalzen
02.18.14 | Silhouette and Abolition are fucking great. |

02.18.14 | vheissu

mryrtmrnfoxxxy
02.18.14 | beggars |
FromDaHood
02.18.14 | The Artist in the Ambulance is their best song that's all I know |
Snake.
02.18.14 | Abolition just sounds way too similar to Stare at the Sun. |
Ecnalzen
02.18.14 | I can hear it a bit in the chorus (probably just because they are in the same key signature), but that's all that really sounds close to each other to me.
I love the ending of Abolition; it reminds me of the killer breakdown at the end of To Awake and Avenge the Dead. |
