Most Overrated Guitarists

Do you eat breakfast like I do?
7Kirk Hammet - Metallica

Now I do believe Kirk Hammet is a great guitarist. There's in fact a lot of Metallica songs that are really well written (Master of Puupets, Creeping Death, Disposable Heroes, etc.) Even the solo in one is one of my favorites. However though he is often seen as the icon of metal guitarists, and he shouldn't be. Kirk is often thought of as this amazing soloist who plays like no other. But just look at other guitarists from his time, people like Marty Friedman could create these amazing solos that were so complex and creative, but all the attention was put on Kirk just because his band was more popular.
6Synyster Gates - Avenged Sevenfold

I happen to think Synyster Gates is also a good guitarist. However not a great guitarist. He has written some cool stuff, it's just that so many people consider him to be one of the guitar gods. He is extremely praised and any Avenged Sevenfold fan will swear to you he is the greatest to ever live.
5Kerry King - SLayer

Kerry is often thought of as a heavy and fast guitar player. But honestly how hard is it to play the open E throughout every song as fast as possible?
4Angus Young - AC/DC

A lot of people consider Angus to be a great guitarists. But why? Most of his songs are just power chords. There really aren't many of his songs that would take a lot of practice to learn. (yes, even thunderstruck)
3Slash - Guns N' Roses

Slash doesn't have the phenominal skill he is so often praised with. I see lists all the time saying slash is the god of guitar. Songs like welcome to the jungle people here the guitar in that and say he's amazing. This is only because of album sales. Because Guns N's Roses is such a popular band a lot of people will buy their Cd's (or in this band's case Cd) which makes people who don't usually listen to songs that are instrumentally oriented think that the stuff he writes and plays is incredible. Only because he appeals to a more mainstream audience.
2Kurt Kobain - Nirvana

honestly you don't even have to play guitar to be able to play Nirvana songs. And yet somehow he still makes it onto top guitarist lists.
1Jimi Hendrix

Now don't get me wrong, he was good back in the 60's when people didn't know as much about the guitar as they do now. He could get some cool sounds out of it back then, which is why everyone liked him. The thing is though that he is still considered to be one of the best even when compared to newer guitar players. He WAS good, but times have changed, so for him to still be known as "The greatest guitar player ever" is absurd.
