03.29.12 | I can agree with a good majority of this list |
ILikeRepetitiveMusic
03.29.12 | Lots of ridiculous stuff being said here. Hendrix could be a bit sloppy when he played live but he played with a feeling that plenty of great guitarists can't replicate. Also Kirk has recorded some of the greatest guitar solos in metal and proves his skill by playing them all a little differently whenever he plays live he's fucking awesome. The rest I agree with |
Trebor17
03.29.12 | James wrote like 90% of Metallica's riffs and songs |
Fluttertrank
03.29.12 | Hendrix is still the man. but honestly no one is "The greatest guitar player ever"
But yeah, this list is right. Like 4, all he does is rehash power chords on all of the ACDC albums. |
ILikeRepetitiveMusic
03.30.12 | I mean Hammett's solos tho. Also I love kurt cobain's sloppy riffs and noisy solos but he is a shit guitar player |
Derptopher
03.30.12 | I know there's no greatest, but Hendrix often is said to be it. And yes James did write pretty much all of Metallica's stuff (So did Dave) all Kirk did was play it. He didn't really start writing till the black album. |

03.30.12 | "Songs like welcome to the jungle people here the guitar in that and say he's amazing. This is only because of album sales."
Yeah, man. The album started selling like crazy for no reason and then people actually heard the music and...you know what, no. I can't even make a logical joke out out of this.
Incredibly stupid and largely predictable list as I knew it would be before clicking. |

03.30.12 | Agree with the majority of the list but you can go straight to hell for listing Jimmy Hendrix as number one on this list. |
lak89
03.30.12 | I agree with most of the list, a lot of them are praised as the greatest simply for being in highly popular bands, Kirk has his moments and has written/played some great stuff but nowadays he tends to repeat himself. |
iambandersnatch
03.30.12 | List is good. Jimi is perhaps a tad over-celebrated but he shouldn't be among the "most overrated" I don't think. Kind of agree with "Santana could be added here" also. He is good but overrated. |

ZombicidalMan
03.30.12 | Wait, what? You bash Kerry King and Angus Young for their rhythm guitar...? They're both lead guitarists. I admit they're both overrated, but Young can actually solo pretty damn well. Unlike King, who should never be given a guitar that has both a whammy and a Floyd Rose. |

03.30.12 | i've always felt the same way about 1. he pushed the boundaries of what you could do with a guitar and he was a great player to say the least. the thing is, in the time since he passed, there have been many other guitar players that keep pushing and pushing the boundaries just like Hendrix did themselves. there are hundreds, thousands probably that are "better" than Hendrix (if we're talking pure technical skill)number of players today who could blow Hendrix away, but those same player owe their skills to Hendrix and others who were the first to figure these advanced techniques out. |

J0ckstrapsFTW
03.30.12 | Hendrix had straight up fuckin talent I disagree |
SGGreenman
03.30.12 | I agree with all except for Hendrix. Hammit is by far the most overrated. |
YankeeDudel
03.30.12 | All many people care about on this site is technical ability/speed. Jimi still gets me wet 45 years after he came out. Ive listened to hundreds and hundreds of notorious shredders over the years and its very rare when one makes the giddy sing like Jimi did in such a short time.
Cobain I agree with but even he played with a lot of feeling. I wouldnt put him near the top of any lists but again guitar playing is much more than difficulty.
This list is typical. Overrated or not these guys put out some good tunes. |
clercqie
03.30.12 | ^ this. |
ILikeRepetitiveMusic
03.30.12 | Thurston moore is a great example of a guitarist who changed the idea of how the instrument could be played |
YankeeDudel
03.30.12 | Yea I look more for guys like Moore who can get different sounds out of a guitar than how technical they are. Tom Morello
for example when he came out sounded like no other.
But yea I agree with Baseline actually that practically everything on a guitar has been done by now. Theres not much else
that really impresses me much anymore that I havent heard before. Which is why Im slowing getting more into
experimental and electronic music. I mean its all been done man. Really. |
BigBlob
03.30.12 | Hendrix overrated? The fk is this shit? I dont know if you play guitar, but I do and when I study Jimi's music it blows my mind. He wasn't all about creating new sounds you know... Remember how he out-played Cream at their own show before he was even famous? |
TheNotrap
03.30.12 | Well I really don't know what's your concept of a great guitar player....faster than light arpeggios?
Sometimes high technique isn't everything...
Kirk, Kerry, Angus, Slash and Hendrix are all great and influential guitar players, each in his own way. |
ReturnToRock
03.30.12 | Ah, here we go. Kirk Hammett and Angus Young. I called this list before I even opened it.
Move along, people, nothing to see here. |

KjSwantko
03.30.12 | A lot of you people fail to make the distinction between great and skilled. Hendrix is considered the greatest ever because virtually every guitar player cites him as an influence. Example- Hendrix is the reason Yngwie ever picked up a guitar. All the others on this list do suck though. |
ReturnToRock
03.30.12 | ^except for Angus. And Kirk. And Slash. And Kurt. |
DeadBeat
03.30.12 | I agree with all of these except 1 [2] |
KjSwantko
03.30.12 | @ReturnToRock, Kirk can't even pick solos, and doesn't write Metallica's riffs. Slash was never good ,has a rudimentary playing ability, and not to mention he can't even vibrato haha. Kurt is a great songwriter but a terrible guitar player, and his style really isn't influential when one looks at how many bands utilize his style or cite him as an influence (not many). Angus I do enjoy. You gotta stop reading those Rolling Stone lists, bra. |

ReturnToRock
03.30.12 | @Swantko: speaking out of pure taste here, brother.
Re: Kirk - may I refer you to Creeping Death?
Kurt I accept, but why is Slash rudimentary? He seems pretty good at what he sets out to do (dirty hard rock) and is massively influential.
And I'm glad you didn't try to make a case for Angus, because there is none to be made whatsoever. He is a great guitarist, period.

rockandmetaljunkie
03.30.12 | Saying that Jimi was overrated, you show how ignorant you are.
Hendrix was the first guitar player who added serious amp distortion and he experimented with so many sounds and amp effects and the results always vindicated him.
"...when people didn't know as much about the guitar as they do now"
That's another sign of your ignorance. Most guitar players of our time worship the guys who played in the 30's 50's and 60's. That's because, apart from the obvious musical influence, they "stole" their techniques. Almost every electric guitar teqhnique that now is considerated cliche was created, involved and used by those legends. The only thing that involved during the following years were the gadgets and the equipment: Guitar amps became bigger and better, the Floyd Rose tremolo was invented, more effects units became available to the public etc.
"He WAS good, but times have changed"
Times have definitely changed, but the style and the techniques which are used to play an electric guitar haven't change since the late 70's and based on that fact, no one can be considered greater than Hendrix.
As a guitar player i have studied Hendrix's music and the things the man did were ahead of his own time. He invented his own chord (how many other guitar players have done that ?), and his music is really difficult to master. He surely wasn't the fastest player around, but acquiring speed is NOTHING. Speed is just ascending and descending minor and major scales the easy or the hard way (arpeggios). What you need is free time, strong will and a hell of a lot of practise to achieve it. On the other hand, writing slow soulful musical material can be really hard even for someone who's been playin for 20 years. In addition combing fast solos with very slow compositions is really a BIG and a very difficult challenge.
So to summarise almost every guitar player owes a debt for what hendrix did. Saying he was overrated is an opinion, but you have to justify your opinion. And your arguments are false and inaccurate. |
rockandmetaljunkie
03.30.12 | Btw i agree with 7,6,5,4,3,2
But i have never heard someone sayin that Angus Young or Synyster Gates are guitar gods. And Kerry
King is flamed all over the internet. |
IMZA1793
03.30.12 | James Hetfield > Kirk Hammet. Also Jimi hendrix is not overrated. |
IMZA1793
03.30.12 | "But i have never heard someone sayin that Angus Young or Synyster Gates are guitar gods. And Kerry King is flamed all over the internet."
Exactly. Never heard anyone say something good about Kerry King. His solos are atrocious but usually fit slayer. |
UnnamedOcean
03.30.12 | I pretty much agree except for Hendrix. He was incredibly innovative and influential. The others not so much. |
Alxander19
03.30.12 | only agree with Synester Gates and Slash and they're pretty much the same guitarist so |

03.30.12 | This list had the potential to be one of the best Sputnik lists ever if Santana was in number 1. |

03.30.12 | "Re: Kirk - may I refer you to Creeping Death?"
lol dude. Here's something from around that time, so watch Vinnie Moore crush for a bit and then see if you think Kirk is even an "okay" guitar player. Kirk is so bad.
