Advice For Guitar Players

If you take this advice you might actually learn how to be a good guitarist!
1St. Vincent
Strange Mercy

Sometimes it's okay to not play, sometimes during a song it's okay to not play and shut the fuck up.
2Pavement
Wowee Zowee

Any local band that cites Pavement as their main influence is going to suck. Sloppy riffs and flubby tone was cool when they did it 20 years ago, why don't you sit at home, practice timing, dial in your tone and then book yourself another show.

Often times less can be more! Most guitarists won't realize why Brad Nowell was a way better songwriter than them. Yeah, don't worry your endless mechanical sweeping is way better than any of his tastefully catchy lead lines.
4Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Pad the vocals!!!! I don't care if your vocalist has a 3 note range, you're going to make them sound like Freddie Mercury!
5 Buckcherry
I don't know any of their album names!

Turn the fuck down! Leave that headroom for your drummer. Why would you want to drown out the most dynamic part of your band? If you're afraid to because your drummer sucks, fire your drummer and get someone competent behind the sticks. Wannabe buttrockers this tip is specifically for you!
6Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125

There's this wonderful thing called: Music Theory. Most guitar players I've met don't bother with it because it would "cramp there style". However there is also this great thing called "choice". You can choose to ignore the sub-dominants push to dominant and instead substitute that for an accidental that is more dissonant and tense, the possibilities are truly quite thrilling once you known they exist.

Power chords are fine, so are jazz voicings, so are sweeps for that matter as long as they are played with feeling. Hipsters will have you believe music is about being "cool", but there's nothing wrong with emoting while playing. If you're angry play angrily, if you're sad play sadly. Guitars should be expressive tools. not something you to impress people with.
