Vesper 01.30.12	Kids who are complaining that it's "not fair" are the dumb ones. Sure, you're disappointed, but the error didn't actually change your admission status. I don't particularly see how the apology is half-assed, unless people are expecting Vassar to grovel for a simple mistake.

robertsona 01.30.12	"Yeah, but those dreams would have been crushed in another hour anyway." it really is different, though. i'm speaking -for- them here but when most people are waiting for a college's decision they are at least partially mentally preparing themselves for it to go either way. it's crushing when they rejected, but at least they know to somewhat expect. being told you're accepted means that you KNOW you are accepted, and then to be told that really you aren't is completely different from the first scenario -- much more crushing because of what you were thinking going into it
theacademy 01.30.12	unless there is a particular professor or program that you have your heart set on, there are like 10 other undergrad institutions that can easily replace whichever your first choice is (except for robertsona's first choice, i guess...)

Ignimbrite 01.30.12	it's different. it's one thing to be rejected from a top choice school: especially if it's one like Vassar, you never get your hopes up too much, so if you get denied then it's really disappointing but you get over it. on the other hand, it's another thing entirely to get accepted to a selective school, tell all your family and friends, and revel for a few hours in the knowledge that you're into your dream school, only to get an email saying that some stupid admissions officer fucked something up and that you're actually rejected. it's one thing to be denied once, but it's flat-out cruel to be denied after being accepted. this didn't actually happen to me, but having just recently finished with the whole college apps process (got accepted to my top choice ED) and having a good friend who had to go through this shit, I think I have a bit of perspective.
