02.28.14 | As long as their not as lame as Beyoncé, why not? |
Onirium
02.28.14 | Well, it certainly is great for artists who don't seek to make as much sales as possible. However, labels probably don't want that to happen too often, for obvious marketing reasons. But yes, I think it is an interesting way to release music and that artists should do this more often. |
someguest
02.28.14 | It should probably only be done when the artist is believed to be at peak popularity. Any other time
the build-up to a release creates significant excitement and anticipation. |

02.28.14 | This = less $$$ |
Curse.
02.28.14 | Yeah, unless you are at maximum popularity it isn't ideal |
Judio!
02.28.14 | The answer to this is pretty damn obvious. |

02.28.14 | yea, on a side note.. can anyone think of any other artists who have done this aside from the 3 listed above? i'm curious to know, cause it's only been recently since i've seen musicians randomly release projects... |
IronGiant
02.28.14 | i really wish tool and radiohead did this because if i had a known release date itd seem to drag forever until then and id explode |
IronGiant
02.28.14 | radiohead did it with in rainbows ^ |
KSK1
02.28.14 | From a fan standpoint yes. From an artist standpoint in terms of making smart career moves no. |
NordicMindset
02.28.14 | Tool will pop it soon. They have tour dates in March so they'll announce it anyday now |
ExcentrifugalForz
02.28.14 | When only done rarely a surprise release generates its own kind of buzz. Maybe even garner a record more publicity than if it had a release date. But the novelty of that kind of marketing strategy will wear off very quickly. |
Calc
02.28.14 | didn't NIN do this? maybe? prolly not nvm... |
titanslayer
02.28.14 | I don't think its good business to surprise release, but it will sure make the fans happy |

Yeah, Godspeed You! Black Emperor announced Allelujah two weeks before its release. |
GnarlyShillelagh
02.28.14 | Not a good idea unless you're big as fuck. Lil Kim surprise released an album at around the same time as beyonce did and look what happened with that |

02.28.14 | JudioRuso
thanks for letting me know, almost forgot about that one! |
jsaf7
02.28.14 | lol, i didn't even know lil kim released a new album, probably was buried from all the buzz Beyonces
album was getting, guess you really do have to be at the peak of your career for a surprise release to
pay off... of course there are exceptions like in Death Grips' case, where they don't have a ginormous
amount of fans like Beyonce, but the fans they do have are very heavy into them, so the word about
their new album spread really fast.. |

02.28.14 | @titanslayer,
yea, i think we share a similar opinion... |
