11.24.12 | Says he's not going to place importance on genres, adds genre tags in each album description anyways. |

11.24.12 | ^Confused me too |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | So confusing! |
climactic
11.24.12 | i have 54 genres... and i thought i kept it simple (no tech-death, melodic black, melodic hardcore, etc) |
menawati
11.24.12 | nice sentiment but when you have a big library and just feel like listening to a certain type of music genre tags help quite a lot |
demigod93
11.24.12 | how did you do it? seems like it would take a while
also seems a bit pointless to me because in winamp i dont even pay attention to genre tags but hey |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | @Climactic, I tried to keep it simple too but it's hard to distinguish between seemingly justifiable genre labels and pseudo-genre labels like freaking depressive funeral doom metal and bs like that.
@menawati eliminating genre tags is forcing me to become more acquainted with theartists in my massive library. |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | 1. left click on category header
2. uncheck 'genre'
3. admire handiwork |
Calc
11.24.12 | seems drastic....I dont even see the genre tags in my library |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | It could be seen as drastic but it was actually unburdening on my mind. Just one less consideration when listening to the music. |
Trebor17
11.24.12 | Fixing genre tags after someone puts something retarded when you download it is a big pain in the ass
|
someguest
11.24.12 | Yeah, I know what bands to listen to for whatever mood I'm in. Why the need for genre tags? |
demigod93
11.24.12 | Yeah I got a Nile download once that was tagged as Electropop or something |
Trebor17
11.24.12 | The genre tags in my library are irrelevant, I already know what genre my music is cuz I listened to it ya know |
sixdegrees
11.24.12 | if it works for you, then cool. |
demigod93
11.24.12 | agreed but it's annoying to glance by an artist genre and have it say something thats the completely stupid
although all my Odd Future albums came with the tags Fucking Awesome, so yea that was kinda funny |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | The only time genre tags are kind of handy are when you power-listen through like 50 new albums in a day and don't remember them the day after. Looking at the genre tags you gave them makes it more easy to recall what you heard. |
Emim
11.24.12 | I got a Primus album that was labelled "Primus" |
climactic
11.24.12 | "Yeah, I know what bands to listen to for whatever mood I'm in. Why the need for genre tags?"
for me its just cause it's a search option more broad than 'artist'. like i can go to all bands of a certain genre and shuffle em if im in the mood, instead of going to each band individually |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | If one really wanted to be clever with referencing music for particular moods, they could create a reference table on excel and place in a table emotions that are invoked for each album. Then just type those emotion tags into the function when looking them up and that would probably be much more specific and accurate to what it is that you are looking for. |
climactic
11.24.12 | or i could just kill myself |
demigod93
11.24.12 | thats a bit extreme |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | lol |
foxblood
11.24.12 | there's nothing wrong with using general tags merely as an organizational tool. if i tag a new album under "grindcore" or something, that'll ensure that it will never be lost and i'll eventually listen to it. because if it's a new artist i'm likely to forget all about it. also browsing though thousands and thousands of artists every time i wanted to listen to something would fucking suck |
Tikicobra
11.24.12 | Genre tags are pretty useful for browsing. Just saying. |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | I never said there was anything wrong in it. Just that there are as many costs as benefits, in my opinion. Besides, it's clear that the effectiveness of labeling by genre becomes diluted when slight variants are given separate names inter alia for grindcore: hardcore, powerviolence, crust, thrashcore. |
menawati
11.24.12 | "there's nothing wrong with using general tags merely as an organizational tool."
Yea thats what i do, i don't have many different genre tags just the top of the tree general ones. It means that a lot of things don't get classified accurately but that doesn't bother me. |
AGuyIsWatchingYou
11.24.12 | I'm eliminating the artist tag from my library, personally I feel that if I do this I'll be forced to focus more on the actual music. |
Winrar
11.24.12 | LOL |
menawati
11.24.12 | haha |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | Well if it works for you then go for it lol! |

11.24.12 | What did you think of 24? Did you like the eccentric psychedelia of it? |
Trebor17
11.24.12 | If we eliminate genders how will we reproduce? |
menawati
11.24.12 | we will grow buds, life finds a way ! |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | @Paperbackwriter the album is really good but extremely odd for the era that it came from. I guess 'eccentric psychedelia' is one way to describe the music. I found it to be pleasantly surprising and better than most modern acts that bear core similarities. |
ShadowRemains
11.24.12 | jesus christ |
tarkus
11.24.12 | 24 is awesome |
SgtPepper
11.24.12 | @Eclecticist
Yeah it was very experimental and innovative, but it's also a very ignored album today. But I'm glad to hear you liked it. Your list is excellent by the way, good taste. |
AGuyIsWatchingYou
11.24.12 | Plays Pretty for Baby isn't post-punk btw, it's post-hardcore/hardcore punk. Great album though. |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | @Paperbackwriter I don't think it's ignored, just unheard of. The only way I had found out about it was when someone reviewed the album a few weeks back. Thanks for the compliment, all of the albums on this list are what I have been listening to this week.
@Aguyiswatchingyou thanks for the clarification, though I really don't think it quite fits as post-hardcore. |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | @tarkus agreed. |
AGuyIsWatchingYou
11.24.12 | I think it classifies at post-hardcore, if we identify post-genres as being genres that take the original sound of the suffix and try to advance it further in terms of ideals, stylistic leanings, etc. then it most certainly does in my eyes. Not to mention it does come from that whole DC scene.
Also while you're on the topic of The USA, even more underrated is The American Metaphysical Circus by Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies (the group Joseph Byrd formed after the disbandment of The USA) which you should all definitely check out if you liked The USA. |
AGuyIsWatchingYou
11.24.12 | And I now see that tarkus is the lone rater of The American Metaphysical Circus on this site. |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | But that's not really what post-genres are because even post-genres fall within a certain set of core characteristics that can arguable be advanced. Would that make them post-post genres? Or just jazz? It's not really a scope that I care to determine.
I will definitely check out The American Metaphysical Circus. |
ChopSuey
11.24.12 | My computer thought Killswitch Engage was punk. |
Eclecticist
11.24.12 | lol well considering you showed it Killswitch I am assuming it has yet to find out what real music actually is. |
IpodMastery
11.24.12 | Fucking lol ^ |

11.24.12 | Bahahahaha! |
Funeralopolis
11.24.12 | wtf does genre tags matter in your itunes library if you know what genre it is anyway? |
IpodMastery
11.24.12 | Depends on sorting. You can make a playlist from a certain genre. Loosening the term will allow a greater variety. Of course this is just one option |
Eclecticist
11.25.12 | love you guys, Brandon shut up sometimes it's unclear okay? |
LloydNewgreen
11.25.12 | tl;dr I assume genre wars and other bull.
Genres are important for classifying music. I don't see how it would change your perception on how it sounds. I hate those people that are like "just call it metal" because metal is hugely diverse, as all genres are.
In my iTunes, all my metal and rock is specific (e.g. "alternative rock" "technical death metal" etc.) because I am most knowledgeable with those genres, but all my jazz and blues are just tagged as "jazz" and "blues" because I don't know enough (or own enough) to specify it. I find that that usually helps if, for example, I just want to listen to thrash metal, but can't decide exactly what, I can shuffle just that genre. |
ILJ
11.25.12 | okay |
Eclecticist
11.25.12 | Cool man. |

11.25.12 | Cool. |
