|Top 10 Metal Concept Albums|
My personal list of the best concept metal albums that follow original storylines created by rrthe musician(s) themselves. I introduced that rule because it would not be fair to judge an rralbum by its story when the story is actually written by J. R. R. Tolkien (as it is the case in rr"Nightfall in Middle-Earth" by Blind Guardian, which is one of my all-time favorites) or some rrother iconic author. Some random other bands with great concept albums: Pain of Salvation, rrSavatage, Avantasia, Rhapsody.
The Black Halo
It shares its throne with its predecessor "Epica". They both tell the best concept
story I have heard yet, centering around the long quest for the meaning of life.
Music and atmosphere are top-notch.
Read the description of "The Black Halo"
An iconic metal album that inspired the whole genre. The story is excellent and
emotional, the music is catchy as hell! Also mentionable: Even though it was
released way back in 1988, the story about crime and corruption is still as up-to-
date as it could possibly be.
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Dream Theater have succeeded to create an album that feels like one 77 minute
song. Main character Nicholas is not the only one who experiences some "Strange
Deja Vu"s - the listener also does while listening to this. A truly epic piece!
V: The New Mythology Suite
It is pure coincidence that an album named after the number five whose lyrics
occure about the number five is placed on - number five! It is an excellent Prog
Metal album with an epic storyline that corssbreeds Greek and Egypt mythology.
Silverthorn has become one of my favorite albums. The storyline is only one of the
many things to admire about this album. It is a shame that the storybook is not
able to tell the story in such an exciting way as the album itself does. But if you
desist from the mediocore literary conversion and let the album tell the story on its
own you'll find out that there is much to love about the tragic story of two brothers
whose world slowly falls apart.
A very emotional story told with a huge amount of passion and genius musicianship.
Only the partially dumb dialogues bug me, but there are only 4 of them scattered
over the album.
The Human Equation
The cast is incredible, including singers like James LaBrie and Mikael Akerfeldt. The
album tells a simple story in an exciting way. I especially like the sung dialogues
between the characters.
My Arms, Your Hearse
An atmospheric masterpiece. Though the story is very simple, the album conveys
the feeling of a coherent piece of art.
Another concept album by Opeth. It is one of my very favorite albums because it is
a masterpiece in musical manners. But the concept story, while being decent, is not
able to hold a candle to most of the other ones gathered in this list.
