|GreyShadow's Top 10 Songs Of 2012|
Yeah, I'm still deciding what my favorite album of this year is but until then...
|10||The Word Alive|
"Evolution" - This song is truly the diamond in the rough of this album. The tribal sound is different, the screaming is some of the best this band has done, and the subtle yet distinct power of the chorus just sounds great. Hopefully this band moves towards a sond more like this when crafting their next album.
All We Love We Leave Behind
"All We Love We Leave Behind" - The deathly sound of this track is immense. As soon as the drums kick in, it just keeps gradually becoming more epic. The hopeless atmosphere this track creates just makes the album for me.
"Phantasmagoria" - This song is an extremely groovy track. It's beauty just keeps on growing with some great drumming used to accompany it and eventually it just explodes into one of this bands best moments to date. Vocally it's not the best on the album, but it's still amazing.
Neck of The Woods
"Out of Breath" - This incredibily talented band closes with another one of their best songs. The build up is just awesome and it shows no restraint whatsoever. The chorus is outstanding and although they've definitely made better, this song still stands out among their excellent discography.
|6||Hands Like Houses|
"Lion Skin" - I believe that this band has the best chance of becoming the best band in the scene of music today. They created an astounding post-hardcore debut with a variety of character. This song is the representative sound of that. It may seem pretty standard at first, but it reaches some epic heights throughout the song.
Koi No Yokan
"Entombed" - This song is too beautiful for words. The vocal performance established in the chours is out of this world and the spacey guitar sound is exactly what you want from this band. I was expecting big things from this album, and this song clearly pushed the limit.
Bright Black Heaven
"Let's Be Honest" - I can't say this album tops their previous effort, but it has some songs that clearly stand right next to it. This is one of them. SUre, it's pretty simple, but it's just so catchy. The duo's synergy is completely evident here. Every second is fun-filled and dance worthy and in no way is that a negative.
The Sleep of Reason
"The Sleep of Reason Brings Forth Monsters" - The best hardcore song this year has. BATS show of their math rock/prog elements here and blend them into a blistering rage. It never lets up, even when it settles down into the chorus which truly connects the whole song together into one complex package.
|2||Pierce The Veil|
Collide With The Sky
"I'm Low On Gas and You Need A Jacket" - Little did I know that this band was going to release one of the best songs I heard all year. The effect it gives is beautiful and it's all in the form of a simple structured pop-punk song. The vocal work is superb and every moment is perfectly executed. This is the song I'm going to remember this band for considering it was the first song I actually liked by them and it encouraged me to give them a chance. Now, I can only hope for their success to continue.
|1||The Mars Volta|
"Nouctourniquet" - The title track of this album is the best song this band has made since "Cassandra Geminni". The album did a great job in leading up to the darkest song on the album. The intro's noise sets the tone and suddenly you never know where the track is going to head. From the emotional sound of the chorus to the erupting sound of "Do you think I'll fold?", this does it all. The intricate druming in a melodic track such as this really adds to the strength of the mood without subtracting from the overall dismal effect. Maybe calling this my favorite track of the year is a strech due to how many amazing songs came out this year, but saying that this is some of the best work to release this year is completely accurate.
