| Daily Drum Lesson: The Nanigo
Today I will be discussing a very obscure rhythm known as the Nanigo. It is a rhythm first used in African (Nigerian specifically) chants and songs that has a very heavy influence in the roots of jazz itself. It's also used very often in Afro-Cuban rhythms and pieces.
The Nanigo is generally counted in 6/8 or 12/8 and, due to this, it has a very distinct (if not odd) triplet feel. It can also be used in 4/4 (very often by Opeth themselves!) but this is less common.
I only have two examples that I could find without spending too much time digging but please feel free to post anything that you yourself find.
Due to only finding two songs, I have included a Youtube video of a percussive group play a piece titled Afro-Amero based entirely around the Nanigo.
I hope you guys enjoy and actually check out these songs! | 1 | Intronaut Valley of Smoke
The beginning of the song is the nanigo itself. The hi-hat added 7-seconds into the song is the beat itself. You can see that this rhythm has a very odd feel to it and can sound bizarre if being heard for the first time.
A rim-shot is added on the third triplet of every set of 3 giving it a swing feel. The bass also adds a great effect. This is a classic skeleton (a base rhythm with no extra fanciness added to it.) | 2 | Opeth The Leper Affinity
At 3:21 into the song you'll find an example of the Nanigo played in 4/4. This is done by adding a few ghost notes (extras) into the rhythm and removing the "swing." | 3 | Afro-Amero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0kdcAUBTv0
0:21 is the first example of the Nanigo but I encourage you to listen to the entire piece if you have the time! | |
