YetAnotherBrick 04.24.11	^ Yeah, that's true. That, along with the person, too. Like, some music has to grow for some people, but someone can love that same album the first time they hear it. And vice versa and back and forth and whatnot lol I just found it kind of strange that my gf says she knows her impression of ANYTHING the first time she hears it.

YetAnotherBrick 04.24.11	So maybe you could say that typically, it's the unique, very aesthetically extreme genres that tend to need to grow on the listener? Genres like death metal, black metal, drone, weird/progressive stuff, some jazz, etc.

NigelH 04.24.11	15 and 2 were huge growers for me. At first I thought they were massively overhyped. Then one song would click, then another, and after awhile I inevitably became obsessed with both albums.

TMobotron 04.24.11	i can't form an opinion on a song until ive heard it at least 3 times, usually more. this is especially true for albums. in fact i find a lot of albums pretty boring on first listen, and its only after listening a few more times that i really see what they're accomplishing.

EverythingEvil2113 04.24.11	For me I can kind of tell if it's worth the time, like I need to find something i enjoy right away that i can build on. Take Jane Doe for instance, I couldn't stand the vocals and the manic pace of it at first, but I really enjoyed some of the riffs, so with that to build on I kept listening and listening until the whole thing clicked for me eventually.
TMobotron 04.24.11	"You still have to like it within a few listens" i dont think this is true, and especially not for albums far outside of someone's comfort zone. For example if you gave some Burzum to someone who just listens to radio music and the like, they would hate it for who knows how many listens, but that doesn't mean they would never like it. Of course that's taking a huge extreme, but i think some of the most interesting music to get into is the stuff that's really unfamiliar and that can take a lot more time.
wabbit 04.24.11	ya I agree I have come back to albums I didn't like (Caribou from last year) and listened to it a year later and holy shit it was good...and that wasn't even a challenging album to get into.

mahan9792 04.24.11	8 is truly amazing. i've NEVER liked folk music. i decided to check it out when i seen it was the best album of 2010. it took me a few listens to get used to his voice, but once i did i truly loved it.
YetAnotherBrick 04.24.11	Wow, it looks like there's a lot of evidence here for the notion that if you don't like something the first time you listen to it, it can, and a lot of times will grow on you. @aokuneff I wouldn't say that really matters, considering 1 and De-loused are pretty different, to say the least lol @TMobotron Great point. But there can be instances where someone will absolutely never get into something. I mean, I listen to tons of different music, but there are a few genres where no matter how much I listen to them, I just can't get into em. But then again, maybe I just need to give em even more time... @mahan9792 Yeah, I didn't really like his voice at all the first time I heard it. Now I adore it. That was definitely a grower haha
