Some Intensely Impressive Jams
i suggest considering visiting any and/or all of these if ever you'd like to
enjoy some premium tunage |
| 1 | | Secede Tryshasla
'Born In A Tropical Swamp' is probably this album's best ambassador, as that's
exactly what the album sounds like: the teeming miracles that are commonplace in
tropical swamps. There's hard-hitting beats, but also sweeping, bubbling ambient
passages that crescendo down waterfalls and up into cavernous canopies. The
album is Shponglesque in its boldness and eclecticism, but uniquely intense in its
execution. |
| 2 | | Cyne Evolution Fight
An excellent hip-hop album; the beats are innovative, if a little shyly - and the
lyrics are a tad elementary at times, but the flows are never rocky and the whole
shebang is just butter |
| 3 | | Failure Fantastic Planet
Criminally underrated alt rock from the good 'ol days. Melodies that are infectious in
that grungy, nostalgic kinda way, with bursts of lovely noise and innovative
textures along the way |
| 4 | | Electric Masada At the Mountains of Madness
This shit is LIVE, chowderheads. LIVE. And it's Zorn doing what he does best (the
ambiguity there tells you all you need to know): pissing on conventions and making
the listener uncomfortable in any fucking way he possibly fucking can. Notes that
aren't really 'notes,' per se? Check. That harsh, but sickeningly intriguing car-wreck
noise? Yupper. Monstrous repetition? You got it. This performance has a fitting title
if I ever saw one |
| 5 | | MF DOOM MM.. Food
Besides Madvillainy, this is Doom at his buttery, unpretentious best. Despite his
totally stoned delivery, the obvious sense of humor that runs through his rhymes
(and the rampant sampling of clips having to do with DOOM and food) gives the
album a playfulness that just begs to have jalapeno Cheetos eaten next to it |
| 6 | | Black Moth Super Rainbow Dandelion Gum
I don't really know what to compare this to, and yeah, that's kinda the point. It's
definitely sunny day music. Synth and lollipop and groomed unicorn music. Acid and
enlightenment and carefree connectedness music. |
| 7 | | NOFX The Decline
Some might say it's a miracle that an endeavor like this one isn't a complete turd
fiesta. But not only is it not a turd fiesta, it fucking slays. Whooda thunk it, an 18-
minute political punk epic that never gets too overbearing, preachy, or long. Fuck
yeah. |
| 8 | | Xploding Plastix Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents
This shit is just off the chain. Heavily jazz-infused trip-hoppy stuff with lots of
curious samples. Some ultra-engaging rhythms and lots of sweeping pretty strings n
shit. Can't believe this is so overlooked. |
| 9 | | Deep Puddle Dynamics The Taste of Rain...Why Kneel
Someone on here called this "the whitest rap album ever created," and while that
might be true, it doesn't make the album any less rad. Very interesting verse
structures, with lots of visceral switching back n forth between the members, and
the lyrics are poetic in that grounded, careful kind of way. Streetwise philosophies.
"Contained chaos replaced with natural gracefulness." |
| 10 | | The Smith Street Band No One Gets Lost Anymore
I'm a sucker for this stuff, but come on, who isn't? Lyrics that hit their sentiments
in the bullseye every time, and melodies you'd have to be either dead or asleep to
not yell along to. It's no Knife Man or Love Ire & Song, but it's pretty wonderful. |
| 11 | | The Field From Here We Go Sublime
Minimilista ambienta electronica WAIT, not that last one. I mean, it is electronic,
but I just didn't wanna say 'electronica.' This album is basically an ice forest that
it's dangerously easy to get lost in |
| 12 | | Damu the Fudgemunk Sparetime
Phenomenal instrumental hip-hop. It sounds like a spirited amalgamation of all the
classics with the lyrics taken out. Simultaneous thinking music and bumpin' music. |
| 13 | | NoMeansNo Wrong
(time) - this album: ---------> (get it?) Seriously though, this stuff is bonkers.
Don't fuck with that bass man, it'll gnaw your damn face off. Dissonance. Weird,
dangerous grooves. This album's just got an attitude, man. Don't make it madder
than it already is. |
| 14 | | Black Moon Enta da Stage
You probably already know what this sounds like by looking at the cover and
knowing it's from '93, but that don't downgrade the quality, brutha. Still some high-
quality, no-bullshit old-school hip-hop |
| 15 | | Streetlight Manifesto Everything Goes Numb
An absolute embarrassment of riches from the moment it starts to the moment it's
done; if you haven't heard this yet, what are you doing. This album doesn't settle
at high-quality, it makes sure that every note's got MAJESTY. The time, the terrible
patience it takes to create something like this. Magnificent. |
