You obviously need Neurosis. Start with "Through Silver in Blood". Now.
List is some bands with awesome bass players (imho).
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence. Jazz-Fusion death metal with amazing bass. Here's a sample
I already have both of those, in physical copy :P
I didn't put them down because... well, if I put down every band, this list would take a while longer. So ya', list of more bands would help me out more so.
But THANK YOU. Had I not heard, that'd be a great discovery xD
Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard (live cut from a piano trio with a great bass player)
I guess some of Mingus' stuff is worth a look (The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus Ah Um) although I've never focused purely on the bass playing.
Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' and 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson' - both have some great audible bass work but may be a bit tedious cos of the length of the songs. Strong funky rhythms and there are actually two bass players on Bitches Brew, and more than one drummer which is why it can sound so cluttered.
Ahmad Jamal - Jamal Plays Jamal (some great and very audible basslines on this, especially the song 'Swahililand', which I discovered through hip hop samples)
Mudvayne - L.D. 50 has some very nice tapping and rumbling
Also check out Rage Against The Machine - s/t if you haven't.
Virus - Carheart
Virus - The Black Flux
Virus - The Agent that Shapes the Desert
|Primus-anything by them.
Isis' In The Absence of Truth and Wavering Radiant
Protest the Hero-Scurrilous/Fortress
Faith No More-Angel Dust/The Real Thing
anything by Iron Maiden
Lateralus by Tool
Thunder by SMV
Illusion of Democracy by Reflux
Jaco Pastorius' s/t
My years of being a bassist playing everything from metal to funk have turned up some pretty good bassmen. It's frustrating listening to most music from a technical standpoint nowadays when I can't hear bass; I know the exact feeling. I get a little jolt in my heart when I hear a band with an AUDIBLE bassist. Those were just off the top of my head, I'll check through my library later possibly for ya.
I could go on and on and on...|
Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
Yurei - Working Class Demon
