Albums That Haven't Aged

Here's 10 rock/alt albums that haven't aged one bit.
1The Smashing Pumpkins
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Billy Corgan may be a bit of a whack-job who has shat all over the Pumpkins
legacy with Zeitgeist and TBK Vol. 1 (Vol. 2 was incredible), but Mellon Collie
remains his album that doesn't sound dated. Siamese Dream sounds old
because of the guitar tone and the layers of noise (it just sounds nostalgic), but
Mellon Collie sounds incredibly current. Most things from the alt-scene in the
mid-90s carry a certain sound...a wannabe Nirvana tone...this doesn't. 1979
doesn't sound out of place on the radio in the least bit.
2The Flaming Lips
The Soft Bulletin

This is the album where The Flips went from shitty indie band (She Don't Use
Jelly is shit) to a bizarre psychedelic band, but seriously, The Soft Bulletin
sounds just as fresh and new as it did in the late 90s; the keyboards, synth,
and ideas were far ahead of it's time.
3Nine Inch Nails
The Fragile

Actually, nevermind, The Fragile sounds like it came from the future. The metal
sounds heavier and the atmospheric stuff sounds softer and more delicate, like
something from a sci-fi flick.
4Foo Fighters
The Colour and the Shape

Modern rock radio is *still* trying to replicate Everlong.
5Joy Division
Unknown Pleasures

Joy Division sounds more modern than New Order, actually. It's like the guys
regressed in their musical ability after Curtis died. Great album, timeless as
ever. The tight, dark and dense production matched with Curtis's drab vocals as
well as the sparse guitar work is incredibly reminiscent of every post-punk act
post-2000.
6Ministry
The Land of Rape and Honey

Every other industrial contemporary screams "this was made in the 80s" except
for this album. Even Pretty Hate Machine; arguably the most modern 80s
industrial album, sounds dated in comparison to this. Thick and heavy; if it
wasn't for that Wax Trax sounding drums, The Land of Rape and Honey would
sound completely modern.
7Pavement
Terror Twilight

I've already done a review on Terror Twilight over this exact reason. The
somber, indie pop tone Stephen Malkmus went for his is still trying to be
replicated (to various success) by Death Cab for Cutie's later releases. The early
stuff sounds old, but this? No, this sounds new.
8Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blood Sugar Sex Magik

I don't like the Peppers, but they've been re-doing this same exact sound for
twenty years and people still eat it up.
9Mudvayne
L.D. 50

Every other nu-metal band (Korn, Limp Bizkit, early Incubus) sounds
ridiculously dated with the turntables, thrashing guitar and random noises, but
not L.D. 50. L.D. 50 sounds like nasty heavy groove metal, I think it's fair to
say this album may go down as one of metal's best.
10Tool
Undertow

Hell, Tool's sound has survived twenty years without them even bothering to
tweak it in the slightest and their concerts still sell out to the max. Teenagers
still roll in Tool shirts. The 20 year old songs still get played on the radio. I
think Tool is the definition of modern.
