12.11.10 | it's a waste of money if the teacher is terrible. and most people that give lessons are. |
andcas
12.11.10 | ^ yea and they'll most likely have you learning some dribble and songs in a genre you don't even care about. find a friend that knows and have him teach you. saves money and at least you're getting what you want out of it. |
Hep Kat
12.11.10 | i started playing when i was like 7, and a friend of my mom's taught be, so i was lucky in that respect. i've had some seriously assholish teacher since then, but i havent taken a guitar lesson since i was a junior in high school, unless you count what my friend's dad's been teachin me the last couple years

12.11.10 | I learned playing by just reading tabs, jamming with friends, etc. And of course playing a lot. |
emmy
12.11.10 | the teacher i had was a really chill guy that taught me all the "necessary" stuff but would also let me bring in cds and learn stuff from those. sometimes he'd play drums along with me too.
there was a teacher in the next room that would spend 30 minutes playing van halen songs and jerking off on guitar while a kid would just sit there and learn nothing. |
bloc
12.11.10 | I just learned through the internet and books by myself. I started off just by covering simple songs, full of power chords and stuff. I think that's a great learning tool, because not only does it help with basic guitar skills, but also in songwriting. |

12.11.10 | learning to read music can be frustrating. if all else fails learn to do vocals. |

12.11.10 | been playing for almost 16 years, I started doing the basic chords and developing the calluses. then covering simple songs like bloc except the songs I chose didn't suck. started to practice solos, melodies, then learning by ear. now I played more than 500 shows, won over many women in bed with the help of the guitars, got awards and now I have about 20+ guitars and basses in my two houses. |

12.11.10 | Mordecai - Talking out of experience?
Emmy/andcas - I see. Alright. Going to stalk the instrumental department at my school once the weekends over. Only person I know that seriously plays guitar is my mom's boyfriend, but pretty much he prints tabs out for me and waits for me to figure it out on my own while. Everyone else takes either piano or instruments with multiple spots in orchestra. |

Speaking as a Guitarist this is the worst thing I've ever heard. Get a Teacher. They will get rid of any bad habit's that you might have/picked up. They will teach you the basics and they may even (like mine) force you to learn blues progressions/scales which sounds boring but is in fact that thing i'm most gratefull for. |
wyankeif1337
12.11.10 | I had an awesome teacher who taught me the basics, but you'll only become good if you take some initiative and learn some shit yourself. |

12.11.10 | Hep Kat - Shit that's early. Do you play guitar still? Like, on a regular basis.
Thane - I see. Can you read sheet music too? I see my friends doing sight singing homework; I'm kind of glad I didn't try to become a vocal major.
Emmy - Oh. Wow. How much did they charge for lessons?
bloc - I found trying to learn by books really hard. But that might have been because I skimmed through the intro of the book to the tabs.
andcas - xD Well I don't mind vocals, but I'd rather try to learn music through instruments.
Relinquished - Um. I'm very happy for your success? Damn that's a collection though. What brand are you mainly into? |

12.11.10 | I learned basic chords on acoustic, switched to heavy metal tabs on electric, then moved to taking classical guitar lessons. I got really good on classical, which in turn translated to a huge increase in my ability to play rock and solo pretty well. |

12.11.10 | i started when i was 9 and i had a teacher for 1 year to get me going. after that i developed my style through my own discipline and efforts on the guitar. essentially if you put the work in, and learn from the internet or by ear to songs you will develop quickly and successfully. obviously it varies from person to person but ive been playing for 8 years now and i only skipped like 2 weeks of playing when i was run over by a car within that 8 years and i consider myself proficient. If you want to learn, you can learn |
spillingmercury
12.11.10 | WhiteNoise - I actually wouldn't mind learning classical music/blues/scales. My friends in vocal have to learn opera and you can tell that it's helped them better than doing pop music covers excessively. How long have you been playing?
Wyankeif/theStefan - Yeah, the main thing I'm scared of happening is that I become just completely unmotivated with learning guitar once I start. I found it really hard to try learning on my own unless I was avoiding school work or people. |
wyankeif1337
12.11.10 | I srated w/ that one teacher when I was 8 and had no idea what good music was. I only started to enjoy playing when music became more than just background noise (granted, that happened when I found Linkin Park, but that was before Sputnik). |

12.11.10 | I've wanted to play guitar for awhile now. My brother just gave me his electric one since he never uses it anymore. I might learn it, it'd be cool to be able to hang out on the guitar and maybe even work on a solo thing I've always wanted to do. |
BSX
12.11.10 | Well I used the vhs that came with my acoustic guitar and practice with it until I couldn't figure out what was going on. I got an electric like 2 months later. I switched over to lessons since I had the money and the guy give me some advice about music (like play because you love it and not for money). He also helped me with the chords for one cd. When I came to college I took lessons from a blues player for 3 years. He taught me about the scales and how to use what and where. Though blues isn't really my cup of tea, I was learning and it helped improve my playing. However we had a fallout about money and since then I really haven't been practicing like I used to. I'm going to start taking class for a minor in music theory next year. |

12.11.10 | get a teacher. do your research and get a teacher. it is so frustrating to play in bands with people that don't speak the language of their instrument! if you ever have plans on working as a studio musician, a demo player, or a truly professional guitarist...... get f*cking lessons. don't follow the useless masses of morons. |

12.11.10 | theStefan: :)Alright. And Thanks. Glad to know you're okay after getting hit. Think after this I'll start looking up teachers and online lessons.
wyankeif: God you guys all started early. Grr. But yeah, me too. After I bought my guitar I've been trying to focus a little more on how the guitar sounds in music over vocals and lyrics.
LepreCon: Haha~ Congrats?
Puddles: What other instruments you play?
Ghetto: Haha thanks for the link. And yeah, Pixies are the shit(:
North: Solo? Thinking about becoming professional musician?
BSX: Aw, that sucks. You going to try getting another teacher? My friends in instrumental are taking music theory. They make it sound like the most boring thing they could possibly take as a class.
Josh D.: Aw, well at least you've learned some things in guitar.
Cana: Oh...you sound a little bitter. Guess you've been in a couple of shit bands? |
tombits
12.11.10 | After you think you're reasonably competent, get someone to recommend you a teacher and just get two or three lessons. By then you'll have developed your own style, but it's good to knock out any bad habits in your playing early. |
jredmond
12.11.10 | get lessons |
Jash
12.11.10 | I learned on my own for about a year then got a teacher. By the time I got a teacher I could play well, but having a teacher opens up so many other doors for your playing and music in general. I mean before I had to stop taking lessons because they're too expensive my teacher was teaching me about mixing/mastering and sound engineer stuff (which is what he did when he wasn't teaching) and it helped me be able to record and mix my music with knowledge as opposed to learning on my own which would have sucked |
DGTLPRTY
12.11.10 | I took lessons for a couple of months. He was a really cool hippie guy that was beast. So i suggest take lessons to learn the basics and then you could just learn by yourself. |
BSX
12.12.10 | @spillingmercury - I would, but I don't have the money now. Plus I have to focus next semester if I have any hope of going to grad school. I know it's not the most exciting subject, but I feel it will help with my song composition for when I start producing and what not. I don't want to depend on someone else to make my beats. |
fr33convict
12.12.10 | Teach yourself, especially music theory. Doin' it right now, modes are a bitch. |
BSX
12.12.10 | @fr33convict - I'm doing this music thing on my own. Besides the piano/voice lessons I don't have anyone helping me. I did order this gutiar theory book online, but the cd that comes with it out of print so I sent it back. I'll check and see if they have one for rock |

12.12.10 | Well I had a mate who was hugely into guitar, and he sort of got me interested in it. So one day on the school I had this guitar I was given when I was five years old and I decided to just pick it up and start learning. I found some stuff about chords and technique on the computer and got going with that. I taught myself for about 6 months and then started getting lessons from the guitar teacher at school, who was fucking brilliant. Although he was all about shredding and technical wankery, I always looked forward to the lessons and learnt a shit load. And of course, I got to have them during Maths class, so big win there. And that's how I learnt the banjo. |
wyankeif1337
12.12.10 | Summary of what everyone's saying:
Get a teacher. |
BSX
12.12.10 | @spillingmercury - Thanks, no I'm not. I really should though, but you got audition and learn all this classical shit to even get into the music department. So I said I'll do it on my own, there is this music academy that teaches a music production course over a 6 week period. So I'm going to see about that. |

12.12.10 | Okay, well if I need a teacher, I won't learn guitar... I don't have enough money to pay one. I could learn by myself, probably, if I put my mind to it.
But, learning an instrument takes forever, and I've spent 10 good years with what I play, I might as well just stick with it. |
Butkuiss
12.12.10 | I learnt guitar teaching myself by just jamming, and looking up the occasional tab, but never loved it really. Picked up a bass, learnt a bunch of Iron Maiden songs, fell in love and just went from there, and two years later. Whatever I didn't self-teach I picked up from my muso friends or the occasional online video. |

I've been playing for around 5 or 6 years but the last two years I've been on my own since my teacher got married and moved elsewhere. I'm 20 and by no means amazing at guitar, but getting a teacher to guide me through the process, and getting me into blues and appreciating other genres on the instrument is probably the most rewarding part of my history with the instrument.
That sounds like a load of wank but yeah haha. |

12.12.10 | Start by learning metallica and blink songs by tabs
listen to the fall of troy and learn all of their songs
play in your high school jazz band, learn to read sheet music
learn to solo over chord changes
take lessons from a GOOD teacher
become jazz major
play in 5+ groups at all times.

12.12.10 | find someone to teach you the basics then play what you like, dont get discouraged, and continue pushing yourself. |

12.12.10 | modes are really easy on guitar, just like some more scales that relate to each other. patterns arent hard. |
Hep Kat
12.12.10 | oh and @ mercury: i still play every day, but not as much as i should, and im definitely not the guitarist i was when i was a teenager |
canatunaman
12.12.10 | @spilling - not bitter. its just amazing how there are hundreds upon hundreds of guitar "players" that have no idea what the major scale is. people learn so much faster from a good teacher. sure, there are guys that can play a few things really really well! and they're never had a day of lessons. But, an educated player can do that in almost any genre of music. i wouldn't go to a dentist that learned from watching videos on youtube. make sense? |
mahan9792
12.16.10 | i've played about 4 years. one of my friends helped me at first but from there i just learned from tabs. i found songs i liked that were easy to play and have made my way up from there. |
