10.28.10 | The Shining is 55 |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | The original, bro. I hate remakes for the most part.
2 is a fucking classic, regardless of what people say. It has the most hated character of all time in my opinion.
Lol, 6 should be higher? Over 1, 3, 4, and 5? Are you serious? |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | Coneren, you really need to get on that. |

10.28.10 | Oh ok didn't see Shining on here. I think I'm hallucinating.
I don't know why but 2 was the first rated R movie I've ever seen and it bored me to tears whilst scarring me for life so idk just never really liked it one bit.
6 is my favorite movie of all time. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | Dude, Joaquin Phoenix's character in Gladiator is easily one of the most hated characters in all of cinema. When I first saw that movie in theatres, I walked out of there absolutely despising everything he stood for. |

10.28.10 | nice list. I only count 2 stinkers (Gladiator, American Beauty) and one that's just too shameless to sign off on (The Departed). Eternal Sunshine's a little girly + overrated but I wont hold it against you.
You have 4/5 from my top 5 on this list (Jaws, Fight Club, Goodfellas, Die Hard).
Altogether, a good list |

10.28.10 | Love all of these I've seen, I take it you don't love Saving Private Ryan? |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | The Count of Monte Cristo(I assume you're referring to the Jim Caviezel remake) was a pretty good movie, but it kinda dragged at times. |
wyankeif1337
10.28.10 | I read, "Movies are ranked..."
"Ranked" tends to mean in order.
I'll leave the rest up for you to figure out. |
wyankeif1337
10.28.10 | And Monte Cristo was awesome. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | It's okay, fr33. I think it's a bit overrated, despite the amazing war sequences. If I were basing this list off how realism, Saving Private Ryan would probably be in the top ten. |

wyankeif1337
10.28.10 | Black Hawk Down much? |
wyankeif1337
10.28.10 | And yes. Seeing as how The Prestige has a higher ranking than 86 or 89, I can logically assume that you enjoy it more than either of those. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | "yea a lot of people get confused by american beauty because of the great acting, but mendes is a hack. The film has no substance or merit beyond the performances of benning and spacey."
See, I disagree. While Mendes sometimes over-does it, American Beauty is a perfect glimpse into a dysfunctional family on the brink of collapse. Since my upbringing was really screwed up, I relate to a lot of the perversion and distrust that the movie showed so vividly. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | "And yes. Seeing as how The Prestige has a higher ranking than 86 or 89, I can logically assume that you enjoy it more than either of those. "

10.28.10 | It needs Johnny Got His Gun. I like most of these movies, but I have to say that I agree with theacademy on this one. |
DiceMan
10.28.10 | Count of Monte Cristo is a really great novel too, just saying. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | "My first comment was stating that I disagreed with this ranking."

10.28.10 | I was stating my opinion that this is a bad ranking, but to each his own. It's an opinion. |

KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | "I was stating my opinion that this is a bad ranking, but to each his own. It's an opinion. "
So, you're opinion is that I don't like the Prestige more than The Dark Knight or Inception? I will show you to my previous statement. |
wyankeif1337
10.28.10 | No, my opinion is that TDK and Inception are better films than The Prestige. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | So you're saying that I'm lying to myself? |
theacademy
10.28.10 | "See, I disagree. While Mendes sometimes over-does it, American Beauty is a perfect glimpse into a dysfunctional family on the brink of collapse. Since my upbringing was really screwed up, I relate to a lot of the perversion and distrust that the movie showed so vividly."
wait but didn't the Ice Storm do this before american beauty, and better. and without shamelessly crapping on american social institutions for the sake of a false release? AB is so fucking smug i can't handle it... given what personal details you've shared with sputnik, I'm actually really surprised you put up with a movie like this... |
theacademy
10.28.10 | the prestige is awesome |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | Okay, I'll quit fucking around and give you my reasoning for it:
Inception came out this year, and I usually have to see a movie more than once for me to really "get it," and so far, despite it being enjoyable and probably my favorite movie this year, it doesn't have that resonance yet with me.
The Dark Knight, while being my favorite superhero movie of all time, is really bogged down by Bale's acting. He annoys the shit out of me in that movie, and it really hurts it in my eyes, even with Heath Ledger's great rendition of the Joker and the atmosphere that Nolan sets.
The Prestige, on the other hand, has my attention and my applause the whole way through. This is the one role that I really like that Jackman has taken on, and the twists and turns that commence as the magicians duel are astounding. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | "wait but didn't the Ice Storm do this before american beauty, and better. and without shamelessly crapping on american social institutions for the sake of a false release? AB is so fucking smug i can't handle it... given what personal details you've shared with sputnik, I'm actually really surprised you put up with a movie like this..."
See, I found the Ice Storm to be really boring, and the acting, while very good, nowhere near the acting in American Beauty. AB is much more tightly directed while the Ice Storm seems to struggle to get going at times. |
theacademy
10.28.10 | wut (re: the other part. i agree w/ you about the acting) |

10.28.10 | Honestly, if it weren't for Ledger's performance in TDK, or him being there at all, that movie would be just another superhero movie. He killed it, absolutely killed it. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | And academy, you gotta understand, I grew up in an environment very similar to that. A husband that basically doesn't trust his wife and goes through a major mid-life crisis to the point of pining over much younger women. A wife who's looking for any outlet to save herself from herself, a child who's pretty innocent, but is very disenchanted, and everyone surrounding them and how there on family problems affect each other. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | "Honestly, if it weren't for Ledger's performance in TDK, or him being there at all, that movie would be just another superhero movie. He killed it, absolutely killed it."
He really did. If they ever try and do the whole Batman franchise over again, they just need to leave the JOker alone. |
kangaroopoo
10.28.10 | awesome list, loved most of these; A. Beauty + Gladiator excellent
would have Shawshank, Pulp, Lambs higher
I'd add Mad Max 2, Halloween (orig.), Irreversible (disturbing shit), Rear Window, Ferris Bueller |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | Rear Window and Halloween are sitting right on the outside of this list, roopoo. Ferris Bueller? Really? Mad Max 2??? |
kangaroopoo
10.28.10 | Well maybe they're not 'classic' but hell I still enjoy them immensely |
Josh D.
10.28.10 | If they ever try and do the whole Batman franchise over again, they just need to leave the JOker alone"
Yeah. Nicholson was just plain mad in a kooky way, but Ledger's dark side of the character was too sinister to ever be outdone, I think. It is just perfect.
I like seeing all the Scorcese and Fincher, but I was hoping to see Kubrick stuff higher. |

yeah im just surprised you didn't find it insulting then. Re-read your exact description quoted above. Those are stock characters, man. That said, you have an awesome taste in movies. I've seen and like all of these. There Will Be Blood needs to be higher though. And I'd probably have Spirited Away and Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain on my list. Probably lots more I'd also switch out that I can't think of right now. |

Impossible to enjoy? Watch it again, dude. It's one of the great docu-drama's to ever come out.
I also didin't include silent movies because, to be honest, they bore the shit out of me. There are a few that catch my eye, but I'm not gonna pretend like I'm some pretentious movie douche and name a bunch of stuff just so people will look at me a different way. |
KevinGarnett
10.28.10 | Dammit, I didn't even think about Gangs of New York or the Boxer. I put there will be blood(which isn't all that great of a movie, but Day-Lewis' carries it the whole way) and forgot his two best(better than My Left Foot and In the Name of the Father). |

Dude, Big Fish is great. I'm sorry your feeble mind can't take a straight up story without any explosions or shooting scenes. And yeah, I meant that Heat.
Maniac- No it doesn't. While American Psycho was great for it's acting, it was one of the most unnecessarily brutal and violent movies I've ever seen. That should have been a character driven movie, rather than something that shocked you with a guy running around with a chainsaw. Granted, it's based off a book, but it could have been more tastefully done. |

if you want some more old-yet-crazy B&W movies with killer sets/special effects check D.W. Griffith's Intolerance (if you can find a full copy movie famously tanked during production) or Birth Of A Nation (racist, but not NEARLY as racist as it was made out to be), The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and Fritz Lang's Metropolis is also baller + actually rly rly great. As far as starting points.
Or you could just get Fitzcaraldo and go all out... |

10.28.10 | Metropolis, Birth of a Nation, and Intolerance(one of the families I lived with when I was a kid had a copy of it) are excellent movies, but I just found the "special effects" of King Kong to be out of this world for that time period. |

10.29.10 | "Impossible to enjoy? Watch it again, dude. It's one of the great docu-drama's to ever come out."
I'm way late in responding, but I own the movie. Seen it probably a dozen times. Fucking loved it the first time I saw it, but it's gotten worse and worse with each subsequent viewing. Now, I'd say Goodfellas is average at best. The characters are too frustrating. I've grown to hate them all. They're all self-centered morons with egos the size of Texas. |
KevinGarnett
10.29.10 | Don't you think that if you're so passionate about a character, though, that usually means the movie got to you in a good way? If Ridley Scott didn't make Joaquin Phoenix's character(Commodorous) so easy to hate and despise, do you think Gladiator would be number 2 on my list? Probably not. If a movie makes you HATE a character or characters, then that means the movie really got to you. |
foreverendeared
10.29.10 | well not necessarily. Joaquin Phoenix's acting was mind blowingly good. Even though his character was despicable, he was "the bad guy" in the whole good guy vs bad guy. His character just made the movie better. But in Goodfellas, literally every character is just totally unlikeable. Maybe if there was just ONE fucking character I could cheer for, the movie would be fine. Joe Pesci's character is one of those characters like Joaquin's, he fucking MADE that movie, but with no likeable characters to cheer for, I literally didn't give two shits when a character died, or what happened to anyone else. |
Apollo
10.30.10 | thanks for this list Pit, I just downloaded 10 movies I had forgotten about and want to watch |

I hope you do realize that you're complaning about a movie that's based on the lives of plenty of un-likeable people.
Which ones, Apollo? |

11.01.10 | i enjoy this list |
