SeaAnemone
04.26.11 | yeah... informed by 'what' though? My dad watches Glenn Beck and has read his book... does that make him 'informed'? No. |
KimmsightMatters
04.26.11 | I think there are different levels of respect. There is the respect that I believe is owed to every human being just for the fact that they are a person. Then there is a respect that is earned - that respect includes things like trust, honor and admiration.
I think everyone deserves compassion and everyone deserves to be treated respectfully even if you don't respect that person. "Respect" is a verb and a noun. In light of that, I think everyone deserves respect, even if they are not respected per se. Does that sort of make sense? Sorry, I'm not very eloquent. |
Vesper
04.26.11 | "...and meanwhile, you are all taking me way too seriously."

04.26.11 | I think people can, or should expect a certain level of respect without earning it first. Allowing someone the opportunity to earn a more developed level of respect means giving them the time of day, involves the assumption that they deserve to be heard and a general attitude of basic friendliness. If we all treated each other like shit for one aspect of the other person's character, that we happen to dislike, nothing would ever get done. |
KimmsightMatters
04.26.11 | Sea - I show respect to people of other faiths. I don't think that makes what they believe right by any stretch because if I believed other faiths were "correct" or "true", I would not be a real Christian. |

04.26.11 | No, you need to take a religion class, Kimm, preferably one dealing with Christianity and its constructions of race. Christianity hinges on the notion of there existing God's chosen people - formerly Israelites, now Christians - and those who are not - the (illegitimate) other who must be saved. Say what you will, but this basic principle of Christianity continues to create differences and hierarchies, even if they are more innocuous now than they used to be.
I say this being fully conscious of the various types of texts in the Bible and that some can be taken as allegory. But the fundamental contradiction of Christianity is that you love everyone, but at the same time, make the other, therefore, less human, those who are not Christian. |

Showing compassion might just mean making their execution a painless one, or refusing to torture them, it doesn't mean patting them on the back and sending them on their way. Do you imagine any murderer or sociopath has ever come to repent their crimes without some level of compassion? Treat them without compassion, torture them, beat them etc and all it'll provoke is hatred and regret at being caught. Nope. My point was treating someone who's already a giant pain in the ass with compassion he will still be a giant pain in the ass afterwards. Also it may also depend from who the compassion comes and which amount. That stuff is all nice in theory but if there's one person you honestly don't care about who shows compassion to you that will most likely not change your behavior. Christians that believe there is nothing wrong with living a homosexual lifestyle clearly are not well versed scripturally because the Bible is very clear on that law not only in the Old Testament but in the New Testament as well.
The reason that some "Christians" disagree with this is because the church has become so corrupted and allowed so many conformities within its walls that there is no longer unity between many of the different groups that claim to be of similar foundational beliefs.

Rapists, child-abusers, murderers and insane dictators all deserve punishment, in some cases death. But treating them with compassion actively raises the person inflicting the punishment to a moral level beyond that of the criminal, and in many cases will be the catalyst for genuine repentance. I don't know any of Hitler's victims, but I know women that have been gang-raped, men who have been seriously disfigured through acts of unprovoked violence, and families, including my own, who have lost people to murder. I've seen how powerful compassion can be, for the compassionate themselves, not those receiving it. You have the gall to imagine what victims of Nazi oppression and abuse would want and feel, and you talk as if they would all want and feel the same things in the same way. You're sure of it, apparently. Well, considering how many millions of lives Hitler fucked up, I'm guessing one or two would have wanted him treated with compassion as he was being punished. Even if it was just one boy, girl, man or woman, some idiot who was naturally compassionate to the bone, you think they're automatically an asshole and a lunatic? You're the most arrogant person I've ever had the misfortune to speak to. |

That's not the universal idea of "religion", many nature religions without any transcripts telling you how to do something are pretty metaphoric and say no word about trying to convert other people. 04.26.11 | "The point I'm trying to make Endeared is that people are acting like aggressive dickheads to a girl on the internet because she believes in God, Jesus and the Bible" There is a huge difference between arguments with a more "harsh" touch than being physically aggressive. Also, when people just ignore certain facts and keep on repeating the same stuff it just gets dumb at some time and it's understandable when people get annoyed. It's easy to say "you don't get it" it's "either or" or just coming back to the point that EEEEEEEEEEEEEEVERYTHING is a point of view. But repeating that over and over again is just counterproductive for any kind of discussion.
Also, discussions should not be taken TOO serious, especially not personal. Many people make the mistake of taking every argument as personal offense, regardless of facts.
E.g. I continuely disagree with people in my religion course and we debate like 2 hours. And still I have no personal problems with any of them, and most of them know that. |

Yeah, people keep saying what Kimm should do. What I struggle with is the fact that people choose to engage in discussion with Kimm, and complain about the results. When was the last time a Kimm list bothered BigHans, Inveigh, Mallen or Redsky? They don't click on the lists, so they don't know or give a damn. Other people click on them, knowing they will disagree, and refuse to take resonsibility for it, making out that Kimm has inflicted something upon them. If she were trolling, every list would be 'Our Lord Jesus' or 'God Hates Abortions.' She mentions her favourite Easter song and she has to leave? Because the site is highly atheist, no one can talk about their faith? The site is also highly racist, homophobic and generally close-minded. Should homosexuals keep quiet, too? And black people? If she offends you, ignore her. If you hate her views, take the piss. Calling for her absence is reactionary, and doing it in the manner that some have resorted to in this thread is cowardly in the extreme.

04.26.11 | It's ok, Endeared, I know who you meant. Does criticising someone make you better? I thought it just meant you disagree. Guess you guys are better than Kimm, then. And andcas must be better than Shakespeare and T.S. Eliot, with their racism and homophobia etc. Kudos dudes. |

04.26.11 | I don't know why some people, in a sort of defense for Kim, say things like "Does criticising someone make you better? I thought it just meant you disagree. Guess you guys are better than Kimm, then", even in sarcasm. I don't think it is hard to discern that it isn't so much a matter of proving right or wrong sometimes. If we're calling her stupid or calling her out on something that is bothersome, that's all it is. |

Masochist
04.26.11 | At this point, I think Kimm gets crap because she's Kimm.
There are plenty of Christians on here who have posted Christianity-themed lists, and plenty of debates that have carried on that have been civil, with each side getting their say (until some useless troll wrecks it), but it's almost as though people grab the torch oil whenever they even see Kimm's name somewhere. And the comments aren't meant to express opinion as much as it is to bring about a specific response from her. It's ridiculous...and kind of pathetic.
tl;dr: Sputnik just seems to attack Christianity SPECIFICALLY to attack Kimm, which just kinda seems childish (and offensive to the many other Christians on this site). |
SeaAnemone
04.26.11 | maybe it's because Kimm presents an incredibly ignorant/dumb side of Christianity that other users don't represent so amazingly well, Maso? |
Josh D.
04.26.11 | "but it's almost as though people grab the torch oil whenever they even see Kimm's name somewhere"
The other people you mention don't do it ALL THE TIME. The fact that her and these lists have become synonymous is the problem. |
Maniac!
04.26.11 | I just like to say things that make Kimm uncomfortable. Is that so wrong? |
Josh D.
04.26.11 | "maybe it's because Kimm presents an incredibly ignorant/dumb side of Christianity that other users don't represent so amazingly well"
That too. |
ConsiderPhlebas
04.26.11 | That statement was empty provocation, without any emotional basis. You guys and your delicate sensibilities...jesus. And Josh, I'm talking about people who are stating that Kimm 'must' or 'should' leave the site, simply because they don't like what they see when they click on her lists. Not sure how that fits in with calling her out on something that is bothersome. |
Josh D.
04.26.11 | I wasn't meaning to implicate you specifically, just using that statement you made as an example. |

Agree 100%. I absolutely despise the 'pro-life' movement and everything it is responsible for, and everyone in it. But telling these people to go away won't change anyone's mind. It's better to provoke ideas than persecute. |
